"The Ardeen Family"

Been revisiting the CSI stories recently, and came across something I'd not noticed before. In the 2nd story, "Parallel Lines" (2002), Catherine Willows mentions some things about her past. To the point of this question, she came to New Avalon when she was 18, Gryphon was trying to keep an eye on her, and she was some sort of "exotic dancer." And, apparently, her family name was "Ardeen". ("Catherine Ardeen didn't dance in dives.")

Now, IMRA Ardeen had already made her first appearance in UF (S3M2: Per Ardua, 2002) by the time CATHERINE Ardeen is mentioned.

So the question is, Catherine's stage name, relatives, or just one of those things?

IIRC, it was at least implied somewhere in a forum post that they are related somehow (cousins?), but the exact relationship was not disclosed. Possibly a case of DITTC, or maybe it's just not that important...

Oh, I'm sure it's not important (unless they were going to make it some level of plot point somewhere along the line). I didn't remember anything (implied or other) about any relationship, so I thought I'd ask :)

Well, let's not mince words, she was a stripper. Albeit a very good one.

Another interesting trivium about Cath is that, although a Titanese citizen both of whose parents were from Port Beltane, she was actually (through a quirk of parental vacation planning) born in Bozeman, Montana.

No, it's her actual maiden name, from before she married Eddie Willows. Imra's father is her brother, which makes her Imra's Aunt Cath.

Catherine is not anywhere near as telepathic as her niece, though it's implied a couple of times in CSINA that (like most Titanese) she's at least a little psychic - she nearly dodges the invisible Salusian's attack in Parallel Lines, for instance, without consciously knowing why she's doing it.

I read that as "prenatal vacation planning" for about 3 seconds before I realized that was wrong. Not surprising since they're anagrams of each other, but still amusing :)

Well, that too, or at least it was supposed to be...

I got the impression that Ardeen was more or less one of the 'local names' on Titan - that is, that 'Ardeen' represented a sizable fraction of the local phone book. This would imply that there is a connection, eventually, but that it isn't recent enough to be of interest to, well, anyone.

It's better than my theory, which involves a woman named Dale and a primitive fold drive invented in the early 20th century that accidentally mutated her genetics...

Hence how she winds up with an extra E in her name? (cause Gorden's GF is spelled with only one E, you see)

Nah... accidental misspelling on the immigration form when her grandson, Malcolm Mackenzie Arden moved to Titan. They misspelled "Makenzie" too.

(I wonder how many folks will get that one)
