"Praise be to you"

Gryph: You may not remember me, but I was one of the millions of folk that e-mailed you about possiblities for extra background for the UF series some months ago. Ya' know, the one that asked about backstory on 03F8 and how Skuld and your avatar met there, and you told me it would read something like Gods Willing? Anyway, I just want to compliment you and everyone else on your work. I recently started on the Symphony of the Sword arc; by far it is - to date - one of the more charmingly original arcs I've had the pleasure of reading since stumbling upon you guys back in the summer of '98 (or was it '97?). Awesome work, without a freaking doubt in my bygone mind. Gryph, if I may be so bold, you are the shit when it comes to creating unique characters and making them believeable, or taking existing creations of someone else and fleshing them out in newer, more interesting ways; Kei, Yuri, and Utena are just a few names that come to mind. (Oh, and another thing: I haven't seen "Revolutionary Girl Utena" yet, but resolve to pick up a copy of the series in the future) You guys at Eyrie have had a huge influence on my writing, let me tell you; before, I'd thought the fictionalization of yourself as nothing more than blatant self-insertion on the part of the author, to self- grandize him/herself and make up for some personal short-coming. I don't think like that anymore. Many of my projects, since reading UF, have been "write yer' own"s in the spirit of what you've accomplished. I just think its a shame you've closed the gate on new authors to contribute to your universe. Sure, I understand that everyone and their corgi would end up trying to insert themselves and utterly ruin the world you've all tried hard to carefully sculpt. Sure, I know its to help keep the flaging tatters of your sanity from blowing away in the stiff winds of the digital seas, as ton after ton of meaningless shit got dropped on you by every hack (self included) from here to the ass end of creation. I respect that you're trying to protect the worlds you've hatched. I know I would. Anyway, hope I haven't ranted at you to much. Keep up the good work, and all hail Discordia!!!! |

Many of my projects, since reading >UF, have been "write yer' own"s in the spirit of what you've >accomplished. I think they've been a big influence on anyone who took at shot at writing these kinds of tales - I still refer on occasion to Hopelessly Lost on occasion to see how this scene or that scene was done, in hopes of finding something that'll spark through my synapses to create my own scene, for Wayward Ones. The entire reason I came around to writing any of the current projects my friends and I have is because of these guys - Gryph, Zoner, and ReRob in particular, since my first encounter with EPU was the first story of UF, but everyone who has ever written for any of these stories, as well. I half-suspect that there're a lot of people out there writing their own stories who were inspired by this place. EPU has made a huge, and from what I can tell, entirely positive effect on everyone who had an idea they thought was cool, but didn't want to write down, for whatever reason. >I just think its a shame you've closed the gate on new authors to >contribute to your universe. Argh. Don't I know that one. I keep wanting to write a UF/WO crossover, since there's already a tradition of temporary dimensional displacement in the two author-avatars in it. Actually, now that I think about it, I think NTE is the only series I'm working on that doesn't involve dimensional displacement in some fashion. The Card Captor set not counting, since I haven't even seen the first bit of that from the would-be catboy who claims to be working on it. And I'm not even sure about NTE, at the moment. I haven't developed it enough to know yet what'll happen. It may even develop that it's not supposed to, and then the story decides to hang a sudden left down Shifter Lane... -Khirsah the Deranged "Run around screaming until someone freaks out and tells you the way." |

My first thought when I found UF was "Oh... another SI.*sigh* *yawn*" But it took only a few moments to send me to the ground laughing. Luckily I don't drink in front of my computer. ^_^ And without UF I would never have had the idea for my new project "Dragonchronicles/Dragons of the rising sun" (I'm not completely sure about the title yet.) It was on a weekend when I couldn't acces the 'net (damn Windows to hell!!) that I got the idea and, I have to admit, it started as a UF story. I had forgotten about the 'No New Authors' bit, I only knew that there as something about new authos, but not what. But I think I got the UF elements out of it. Luckily I didn't get to far in planing the story before I could acces the 'net again. BTW is anybody here willing to preread 'Dragoncronicles when I get the first part ready? I could have it finished in a few weeks at best, a year at worst. ^_^; Benjamin Brill who lives near one of the (former) largest cities of the world and is still as far away from civilisation as Tatooine.

Ask again when you're mostly done. Chances are, a lot of people will say 'oh, I'll read it' when confronted with it, but not very many are going to jump up and say, 'sure, I'll be ready to read it whenever you finish it, even though we have no idea when it's going to be finished, what it's about, or who you are.' Of course, I could just be pulling this from my nostrils, and everyone really will pop up like the toys in a jack-in-the-box factory. -Craig
