Since when are you in Marlborough, Gryph?

I am still amused by the baseball, I have to wonder how much of that is a direct result of Truss and me watching RedSox games while you write. (Must get a Varitek jersey.)

>Since when are you in Marlborough, Gryph?

I wrote the introduction at work, and automatically put down where I was at the time.

A direct result, I'm not sure. Indirectly, I blame the drugs I was on in California for altering my brain chemistry so that I like baseball in the first place. I hated it when I was a kid.

You have to love it. In the state that is the heart of Eyrie, you have a professional athelete named Varitek. Better yet, he plays the only position in his sport that requires one to fold up into Gerwalk mode.

You continue to demostrate your mastery of the art, Gryphon. A couple comments/questions:

The first thing I thought when I saw the title of the arc was "Does that mean we're gonna see Larry?"

Mmmm.... Baseball.

Saionji seems to have bitten off more than he can chew, unless he's a member of the Q Continuum or something.

Always ready for the next part, I remain

... Eh?

>Mmmm.... Baseball.

I've liked baseball for several years now; I think this is the first opportunity I've ever had to do much with it.

(By the way, in case anyone is curious: Yes, Coco Martinez is a distant descendent of Pedro Martinez.)

Well, he didn't really bite it off so much as have it shoved in his mouth, but... well, that would be telling. :)

Oh. I thought you were talking about Larry Mann.

No, UF isn't an In Nomine-styled universe, particularly. If there is such a being as Laurence, he's probably just an aspect of Tyr Grimjaws, god of war. The arc title is just a reference to Kate's two main hobbies. :)

   >Oh. I thought you were talking about Larry Mann.

Me too.

Speaking of R-Type, does he have anything planned or plotted for after TWILIGHT?

Maybe it's just me, but I'd love to see Redneck & R-Type in a buddy movie type story. Redneck did Die Hardly, and that was a hoot, so maybe we need to see something inspired (very loosely) by Lethal Weapon or somesuch.

Oh, I finally saw Gunsmith Cats (or is it Gun Smith Cats?), and William Collins is my hero. There were only the three episodes made, right? Is there a Manga?

Yes, only three episodes of the anime and 19 or 20 volumes of the manga. But I've heard that some new GSC stuff is in the works.

Don't be doing that... Don't make me have to go edit the DCF code to block blink, I have too much to do.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I'd rather not have thinks blinking on the forums...

   Symphony of the Sword.

I love it! Classic UF flavor with a hint of new-age that comes with the future imperfect connection! wOOt!

Very well written. Out of all the books I must have read in the past 15 years I have yet to even see anyone attempt the creation of character that embodies Kate.

Excellent! As usual, it was SO worth the wait. I can't wait for the next part of the series!! :)

You (and, seemingly, everyone else) are incorrectly assuming that Twilight is being held up by a segment that Gryph has control over... when, in fact, the culprit is one of the other Twilight authors.

Interesting. It's unfortunate that you really can't convey how awkward, difficult, and time consuming trying to communicate can be for someone who stutters in a text format.

Baseball I don't care much for, but I approve of getting rid of designated hitters.

> a mental feeling rather like the sound a carbonated beverage makes when the
> last of the foam has gone

This is the single weirdest metaphor I've ever encountered outside the works of Terry Pratchett. WTF???

Descriptions in prose of musical performances have yet to do anything for me, but I like the band.

So, what did the originsl AON do aside from "In Visible Silence"? I haven't seen any of their stuff anywhere for years.

Keep them coming!

Yeah... I ran into that full-force last night while working on a sequence for A Rose at Christmas. There's really only so much you can do in ASCII before it becomes as hard to read as it is to understand hearing it, which, while possibly an effective display of the problem, isn't much fun for the reader. (And it's hard to type, too.)

But I'll muddle on as best I can...

Actually, it's a simile, not a metaphor, but... I rather like it. That little shivery sound a soda makes when the fizz breaks is just like the thing my mind does when it finally starts working in the morning... :)

>Descriptions in prose of musical performances have yet to do anything
>for me,

I have a tough time writing them, too, trying to give them that dynamic feeling. I'm reasonably pleased with the way the ones in Wounded Rose came out, though, and it's not as though I could leave them out in this case.

Not all that much. Aside from the various compilations (Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?, The Best of the Art of Noise), they had one other album that I can think of (In No Sense? Nonsense!). They also did the theme for the 1985 Dragnet movie, the version of "Peter Gunn" that was used in Cool World, that one song with Max Headroom...

Daft is a reprinting of the early material from Who's Afraid of..
In Visible Silence , my favorite of Art of Noise's albums, includes
the Peter Gunn theme with Duane Eddy, and Paranoimia, with Max Headroom on some versions, without on others.
In No Sense? Nonsense has the Dragnet theme
Below the Waist has the James Bond theme
The Seduction of Claude Debussy was released in summer '99, and is a concept album about the life of composer Claude Debussy, narrated by John Hurt.

There are also 3 albums of remixed Art of Noise tracks: The Ambient Collection, the FON mixes, containing the Prodigy mix of Instruments of Darkness , and the Drum and Bass collection, which is OK if you like spazzy synth-drums over everything.

...and damn do I love Kaitlyn. But her stuttering brings up a bit about Detians for me-- if the Detian body is basically damn near perfect, how is it that Kate has a speech impediment? Or is it largely psychological? (I don't know a heck of a lot about stuttering, despite having some amusing speech issues of my own. Bear with me...)

Oh, you will. He's extremely important to the Symphony. The others, not so much, though they'll appear off and on since they're part of Kate's family; but Corwin is the one she's closest to, and his arc with her roommate is developing into something quite fascinating.

Perhaps. Corwin is only named after Prince Corwin of Amber - he's not supposed to be the same character. (He does have the same favorite colors, but that's a reference, not a borrowed trait. :)

Then try this: It's a correction, not a revision. The occasions posters may be thinking of where I've resisted altering a piece after it's gone up have been after suggestions of changes in structure. This is the equivalent of JMS dubbing out the fuck-up in the location of the Jack the Ripper murders in that one episode of Babylon 5.

Nobody really knows why Kate stutters. Theories range from "it's all in her head" to "something to do with the assassination attempt on her mother a couple weeks before she was born". Investigations have been made, but haven't turned up anything. We'll also see in the next episode that there's another special condition under which she doesn't do it, which lends credence to the psychological theory.

(I'm not eager to define it fully myself; it's a trait that the character came to me having, and I don't really feel the need to nail it down much beyond that. If I had to make a guess, though, I'd say it's a combination of several factors, psychology among them. It does get worse when she's under stress, except in the case of extreme anger, where it goes away entirely.)

As for Detian physiology, it's kind of odd, especially in second and subsequent generations. When we first meet her in Wounded Rose, Kaitlyn isn't a regenerative immortal yet; she hasn't finished growing, and in born Detians (as opposed to made ones), that's when it "locks in", if you will. That's why she needs glasses; that need will probably go away when she reaches adulthood and "freezes".

>Bring on more Corwin. Bring on the other two brothers and Priss, too.

They'll all be in A Rose at Christmas, and Sylv too - fun for the whole family.

Yes, although there's a good chance that a mortal wound or illness will cause the aging freeze to kick in and induce regeneration prematurely. Usually that's not a problem, since normal Detians can then age forward and back to their freezing point at will; but in a small number of cases the trauma leads to Edgerton's Syndrome, a total premature aging freeze, which traps the victim at whatever age it struck them. Which is generally a lot of no fun.

(shrug) I'd already developed Edgerton's - there's a character in a mostly-complete-but-behind-other-things-in-the-release-queue story who suffers from it.

   >Unlikely - you underestimate the power of stupidity.

And the inability to grok.

To most people, even those who are fairly competent in very narrow areas of computing, computers as a whole are scary and intimidating, and they're afraid of making a mistake. Then there's people who don't know nearly as much as they think they do, who are even worse. I'd rather have to deal with timidity due to ignorance rather than brazenness formed from idiocy any day.

For example, my sister is reasonably computer-literate in a few narrow areas. She can do far more with MS Excel and Word than I've ever bothered to learn, and she can navigate the web reasonably well, and can find how to access a program so long as it's either in the start menu or on her desktop. But she was scared sh!tless to try to install additional RAM in her laptop, even when I offered to talk her through it over the phone, and insisted that I do it when I came down. (Took me ten seconds.) Forget trying to troubleshoot i-net problems over the phone, or talking her through configuring a dialer. So I wind up just doing things the easier way (i.e., spend fifteen minutes in front of her laptop whenever I'm in town to fix any problems she might or might not be aware of).

Then there's my grandfather, who's a WPI alumnus and worked as an electrical engineer for about fifty years. He was on the team that installed and ran the first computer ever in Wappingers Falls, NY. But modern computers are so different from what he knew that he has problems even connecting to get his email. (I had a promise forcibly extracted by my uncle that after I move to GSO, at my earliest convenience I'd drive down to my grandfather's house near Charlotte and make his life easier.)

So there'll always be a spot for tech support, and as computers get more complicated, there'll be more room.

Sounds like me... except that I know I could figure it out if I wasn't so lazy.
Generally either bug someone about it (and they're probably on this forum) for detailed instructions to jot down on the back of a busticket or just forget it as it wasn't important anyway.

Oh gods! The time it took to explain 'Save As' on Windows to my mother... who earned a BSci in computers in 1973. Or the wonders of 'cut&paste' from her email onto wordpad and saving to a floppy. I think she still uses my handwritten notes as a guide today.

*laugh* Say, if you know anyone who's looking for a random techie -- I'll do tech support, hardware tech, and I'll try just about anything -- drop me a line.

As for boredom? After knocking around there on vacations to see family, I have to say it'll be an improvement over the Lehigh Valley. And, for being in the South, it's not all that Southern, culturally. (Get much outside of it and that changes, but, oh well.)

Let me know where in Greensboro, and I can throw a stone your way. I'm in Morrisville, the city that might as well give up and be absorbed by Raleigh, Durham, or Cary.

I removed it because it had become horribly out of step with developments. I decided not to update it and put it back merely because I haven't got round to bothering yet; I'd rather focus on things that have characters. :)

OK, this isn't fair... Now I have THREE great EPU arc's that I'm actively waiting for the next chapter in (on top of the ones that I just enjoy when they come)... At least Twilight is only waiting for the last chapter (I'm reserving judgement on Apotheosis Now - IMHO there's more than a single fic's worth of stuff to tie up (but I could be wrong...)).

Keep it coming! :)

Exactly! Besides, even if new fic isn't available, there might be a new hat on the griffon.

Speaking of the new fic, very good. I've happily devoured the Utena story, and started re-watching it from the beginning - where I then started yelling in surprise about how much they give away from the beginning, but you just don't realize that they are.

Okay I've read it. I've had FYI: whoa! I like it (like that's a surprise!) quite a lot. I've been fond of Utena for a while so it's nice to see her making what looks like an major appearance in an Eyrie fic...

As to the Corwin question stated above, I didn't twig the Ravenhair till I actually read the whole thing (good job I wasn't drinking when it clicked). No way is he the amberite... that would make Gryphon into Oberon and that's just not gonna happen to my mind. (unless I just provoked it)

And any fic that gets me interested in what happens in an baseball game (my tolerance for spectating any sport is just about zip) has to get points.

I'll be looking out for further stuff on this arc... whenever you get around to it... or anything else. Least you're faster that I am at writing this stuff (though you could hardly be slower)

Although that would be an extremely interesting story line. Lot's of family angst and stuff. And almost always a lose/lose conflict. I think it would fit right in with a lot of the exile stuff. Perhaps a child inadvertantly fathered by Gryphon during that time period. One he never knew about, and who wasn't real hapy about finding out he/she was immortal? (Mother, siblings, etc. growing old and dying while they stayed young. Maybe even a failed suicide attemp or two?) I would love a story line like that.

I'm not entirely sure the Detian race as a whole doesn't keep an eye out for stray Detians coming into their abilities to give them an understanding of what's happening to them.

Plus, I tend to suspect that anyone Gryphon was sufficiently interested in to sleep with would also get told that he was indeed THAT Benjamin D. Hutchins, who's been around forever and ever, etc. But, who knows.

How would someone handle "R U a girl??"? Or is that one of those "things Man was not meant to know"? I've been on the net for a while, but I'm not terribly familiar with chat rooms, IRC, IM, and so forth. I prefer to have time to consider my words.

No, I haven't mentioned a thing about her yet. Probably in A Rose at Christmas.

Or I could drop it here.

Oh, what the hell. Kaitlyn's freshman-year roommate, who lasted precisely one and one-fourth terms, was named Hiroe Ogawa.

Looks like I'll have to wait on that one, then. I'm not an anime fan (I got into UF through Chris Meadows' Misfold, having been a Robotech fan in my youth).

A casual Google search for "Hiroe Ogawa" answers the question rather quickly. :)

I also had no clue until I did that. If Gryph were to write *that* story, would there be an installation of an 18 or older/may not be legal in your state/country/province warning page on Eyrie? :)

Highly doubtful. The closest I've ever come to attempting actual erotica is the operative part of The Day the Universe Changed, and that made me so nervous it'll probably be quite a while before I attempt anything like it again (if I ever do), let alone anything that goes beyond it.

I deal with this every Wednesday. I'm the wheelman for our Gang of Four, and we routinely waste upwards of 20 minutes making apathetic suggestions of where to eat. Every week.

Tonight's dinner discussion at ArdBugPlace started at 7pm with "so, how about Jack in the Box?" "sure, why not."

We promptly sat around for 20 minutes picking over some chips and salsa. Then it became a few more minutes of lazing around, after which Bugged said "hmmm. Chinese." "Okay, just waiter.com something from Magic Wok." "Mmm, yeah."

30 minutes passed. "Uh, maybe Jack in the Box." "Okay, whatever."

Chili's has really good chicken-fried steak. I recommend it. ;)

   Ah, I hate posting deep in the bowels of a runaway thread, but what they hey;

Android: "Okay, the sci-fi meeting's over, who wants food?"
(Ten and a half hands go up)
Android: "Where should we go?"
(Restless murmurs)
Android: "Any suggestions? No? Well, um, how about so-and-sos?"
Random Geek 1: "I don't like that joint."
Android: "Erm..."
Uncle Don: "Thai?"
Random Geek 2: "I don't like Thai."
(So on and so forth)

That, too, happens every week (well, every non-summer week). Except, usually, Don doesn't suggest Thai unless he's really tired of waiting...

Oh, and just because it just occurred to me, 'Hello muddah, hello faddah' is sung by (at least, my copy is) Allen Sherman. And yes, that's the song's title, unless my copy is incorrect.

This is so prevalent among the members of Living Room Games (and associated freaks, geeks and pals) that we currently have in the works a card game entitled "D'jeet Yet?" The object is, of course, to get everyone to go to the restaurant of your choice.

*shatter*

It was the Tuesday that did it.

(When I was in college o those aeons ago, a friend of mine declared herself the Tuesday Scapegoat. If it went wrong on Tuesday, it was her fault. We have no idea why she did this, but ever since then, the entire idea of Tuesday-related phenomena makes me snicker. The combination of that, and just the way that was put, well... I had someone looking strangely at me at work.

Tuesday used to be IRC Abuse Night at GweepCo. We'd all get on some random channel on EFnet and heap scorn on each other, and any hapless fool who happened to wander in would think that we all hated each other. It was great fun, and very stress-relieving...

I didn't know who she was either, till I looked it up as well.

Oh, my Goddess!!!

Fortunatly, after reading the posts, I was smart enough not to have anything to drink while I looked it up and therefore managed not to snarf all over my keyboard with laughter.

Then the though occured to me that Kaitlin is SOOO lucky that it was Skuld who took the fancy to Gryph, and not Urd. Can you imagine what sort of mayhem that would cause??? (even though Urd is Not, precisely, Kaitlin's mother... I just can't help the feeling that she would want to put her oar in after hearing about the poor girl's problem.)

Indeed. Now you understand why the administration is so apologetic about last year, and why Miss Montaigne had to wince a little at asking her to risk another roommate. Kate's no prude - she hangs out with Azalynn dv'Ir Natashkan - but she has to sleep. :)

Carefully calculated absences, and possibly half-serious claims of having to save her hands for music, I would guess. It's just a throwaway joke, I haven't exactly dedicated a full development cycle to it. :)

Or maybe she didn't, but gave up in fairly short order and handed the case over to Azalynn, who pronounced it hopeless without quillian root, which is of course illegal within the Earth Alliance.

But I would tend to doubt that scenario in favor of the previous one.

If I may ask, humoring my interest in all things Muse, who is Anne Cross? Other than that, I just have to say that this is shaping up to be an interesting, if not off-beat, series -- quite different than what I've come to expect from UF. It's like reading The Bug U after reading Snowcrash and such, which is the exact way I did it. A nice change of pace, kind of, some what, a full-circle... Spawned of WPI, returned to WPI. As always, that sound you hear is my applauding.

Too late for that... I'd already referred to her by name on these forums at least once. For which it's entirely possible that I'll get flogged, but answering this question now won't avoid that.

*wave* I knew already, oddly enough. But then again, I treat everyone with the same level of cavalier disrespect, so it didn't make much of an impression.

I have a sudden vision of foaming-at-the-mouth and several men in flannel holding RMS down while injecting some kind of tranquilizer. Or maybe I'm just punchy from lack of sleep.

I was working at a booth. he wasn't wearing his badge. I'd never seen a picture of him and gave him the standard booth spiel (in this case, about Illiad doing a book signing with ESR at the O'Reilly booth in 20 minutes or so).

He just sort of blinked and said "Don't you know me? I'm Eric S. Raymond."

first thing that came to mind popped up, much to everyone's amusement. I think we're on better terms now, or at least he doesn't remember me. ;)

>I think you said you'd been to Arisia - ever run into RMS there?

First off the obligatory 'Bravo old man, jolly good show'. :)

I had the self-amusing term 'Chick Fic' pop into my head at one point. I don't mean that to be insulting or sexist, just as a play on 'Chick Flick', but I was curious if the overall female tone had more to do with the nature of the character (she is a she after all), or was it a defined thematic choice from the start? Or a combination of both? Or am I reading to far into it?

Dumb old guy that I am, I felt it was deftly handled and that it really worked well.

I couldn't help but drawing some Real Genius parallels as well...intentional or just a result of my having watched it nine bazillion times? :)

Both main characters are female; it developed from there. I dunno as I'd call it a "defined thematic choice", but I submit that it was kind of inevitable given the casting. :) Or you're reading too far into it. Take your pick.

It's probably a result of my having watched it nine bazillion times, actually. That's one of my favorite movies, and there are certain parallels between its setting and that of the early Symphony. :)

Damn, I drop off the net for a few days and look what happens....

Oh well, all I can say is that Gryphon has outdone himself yet again. It's good to see Kaitlyn get a starring role. I've been looking forward to it ever since she was born. And until now, all she really seemed to get was a brief appearance in some fics. I'm still trying to figure out how a cute little five year old can be dark and mysterious, even with PCHammer showing her how (Checkmate, for those that are curious)

Hey, did anyone else notice that when was easily beating Saionji, she wasn't stuttering? Either Gryph forgot, or her stutter's more mental then physical. Just something to consider.

to use gryphon's own words:
(I'm not eager to define it fully myself; it's a trait that the character came to me having, and I don't really feel the need to nail it down much beyond that. If I had to make a guess, though, I'd say it's a combination of several factors, psychology among them. It does get worse when she's under stress, except in the case of extreme anger, where it goes away entirely.)

I would guess that, under the circumstances of the scene in question, her anger (righteous indignation? sorry, wrong author :) overrode the stress factor.

Her stutter also goes completely away when she's sining, which is (from my understanding) incredibly common, for those whose stutter is psycological in nature

*laugh* That's as may be, but I couldn't help that first mental image that popped into my head, and wouldn't go away.

There were a couple of times in Wounded Rose where I thought you were hinting towards that kind of relationship between Utena and Kate; while I've nothing against such things, I'm glad it didn't happen that way, 'cause it wouldn't have felt right. Not with them, anyway. (Although I find myself wondering about Azalynn.)

Pleasant as the image is, I rather doubt it would work out myself. For one thing, it's much too quick. For another - and this is an intriguing paradox if you know her history - Utena is basically straight. I'm pleased you noticed the tension, though, because it's there; Kate would, in general terms, certainly not object. :)

And what the hey... I passed along this Trivia Fact on the fan channel yesterday, I might as well share it here, too:

Gryph's original character design for Azalynn was inspired by Kaolla Suu (from Love Hina). Or, rather, by the fleeting glances of her that we see in the "Right Now" and "Teenage Dirtbag" LH music videos that I burned onto a VideoCD for him last month.

Suffice to say the character has evolved a -wee- bit since then. ;)

--truss.
Though this image has a certain amount of the Azalynn nature to it.

(Zoner, the forum code is broken -- I can't make DCForum link to, but not display, an image. Which I can understand if I just type an image URL... but if I use the [link:URL|text] format, it ought to do what I want.)

Yeah, that's a known issue. Hardly anyone ever does a link to an image so it comes up very rarely. Basically one of the 'bugs to be fixed when there is nothing better to do'

Well, it may come up more frequently if I start pointing people to specific pieces of Larry and Phil's art. :)

(In the [link:URL|Text] case, wouldn't it just be a matter of swapping the order in which the "insert the image here" and "insert a hyperlink with specified text" tags get evaluated? Or is that an incorrect assumption made by someone who has never actually seen the code?)

I think there is more to it - note it is only doing it to images, so it isn't just messing up because there is a URL embedded. But I only looked at it briefly once when someone on the DCF support boards mentioned it - basically to see if there was an obvious fix or if I'd have to spend time on it. I didn't see an instant fix so I forgot about it.

Guys, this thread is whompin' enough without digressions into perl methodology.

Which reminds me, everybody - feel free to start new threads with particular questions or comments, rather than just piling this one deeper - after a while (like, about now) it'll start getting really hard to keep track of.

Okay it's late and my brain refuses to think, so I have two (stupid) questions.

A. Is she (Kate) gay/bi or whatever?
B. Why does everyone hate the Resident Evil Novels?

   >A. Is she (Kate) gay/bi or whatever?

In terms of sexual attraction, yes, she's bisexual; in terms of romantic attachment, she evaluates potential partners on an individual basis rather than by starting with broad classifications like gender. Both are important factors for her when considering the possibility of a sexual relationship; she won't do that kind of thing simply for its own sake, it has to be part of something greater. (Or rather, at this point in the Symphony, "would have to" - she is, after all, fifteen, and not very aggressive, sexually or romantically.)

>B. Why does everyone hate the Resident Evil Novels?

I'm sure I don't know, not having read them.

I notice that the title of the second movement has changed to "Christmas Rose" from "A Rose at Christmas."

Any reason, or just keeping titles consistent in form?

Partially consistency's sake, partially because I'd been dithering between the two in development and had a couple of people tell me they liked the shorter title better, and partially a realization that the longer title was almost exactly the title of an Inspector Frost novel, which didn't really give me the mental ambiance I was shooting for.

Mostly, just fiat.

Item one: I really didn't expect to see Utena. That was a heck of a surprise.

Item two: I really have respect for authors that can write about music. I'm a writer, and a musician, and writing about music is something that's extremely hard for me to do.

Item three: While we're talking about music, good job on the band/friendship dynamic. I'm in a band (http://www.sown.net) with my close friends, and we're very much like AON in some respects. Perhaps not as musically talented, but then again, we don't suck, either. Anyway, you nailed the band "feel" dead-on. How did you know?

Item four: Is Kate Detian? Are we supposed to know? If she is, why the stutter---I thought the retrovirus had an enhancing effect on the central nervous system, which I expected to cancel out such problems.

Item five: BASEBALL! I thought I was like the only fan left! Pedro Martinez pitched for the Albuquerque Dukes (the Dodger AAA farm club) back when he was coming up through the minor leages, and we saw him pitch. He was good then, and he's (obviously) much better now. DAMN the Dodgers for trading him away. Albuquerque has since lost its baseball team; I just dragged myself out to the polls to vote to raise money and bring baseball back to town. Uh, anyway. Baseball. Way to make me happy. (If only the rest of my band liked it...)

Item six: What's this Big-O thing? Is it on cable? I don't get cable. ;p

Okay, back to practicing drums.

Yes. Since it is a dominant genetic trait and her father is a Detian - yes, you can infer that. And see other posts in this thread.

A really cool 13 episode TV series from Bandai. Yes - it is/was on Cartoon Network. Coming to 4 DVDs over the remainder of the year - the first on 6/19.

Ya know, I go put all this effort into finding random CDs, tapes, and mp3s so I can create Eyrie soundtracks, and then you go and start using brand new soundtracks from anime that my cableless self can't get. Ah well, maybe I'll have some money by the 19th. ;)

Yes, I finally managed to get settled in at home. On the other hand, no, I'll probably be too lazy to post again for another 3 weeks. Though new Eyriefic is a <i>wonderful</i> thing. And now I want a T-shirt with Laudre's

I'm not saying or implying anything, but a little bird told me that the Big O soundtrack, in its entirety, will be showing on Usenet on alt.binaries.sounds.anime in the near future.

So you might want to listen to my avian associate if you have the distinct desire to hear some darned cool musicality stuffage. (From the Penguin to Ed in three words. That's gotta be a record for my brain stripping I mean changing gears.)

note to self: after resurrecting the DadComputer this evening, watch one of the CB DVDs I got at A-kon....

>something that's extremely hard for me to do.

I find it difficult as well, and I'm never quite happy with the way the bits come out - it's very hard to portray the kind of dynamism that a real musical performance has when you have to keep stopping to describe it in the first place. Still, the ones in Wounded Rose don't suck, if I do say it myself.

>Anyway, you nailed the band "feel" dead-on. How did you know?

I was a band geek in high school - concert band and stage (jazz/swing) band - and when we were really cooking, the stage band had that kind of feel to it. We went on a road trip to Montreal once for Performing Arts Abroad, and though there were about thirty people in the band and not all of them got along, there was a smaller subgroup I was part of that had that sort of dynamic. When things were going right. The rest is just the amplification effect of nostalgia and the fact that everything, friendship and enmity alike, runs a little deeper in the UF universe.

>Item four: Is Kate Detian? Are we supposed to know? If she is, why
>the stutter---I thought the retrovirus had an enhancing effect on the

See above.

>Item five: BASEBALL! I thought I was like the only fan left!

That scene might have been tougher than the music! It's like portraying a battle, except with stricter rules. (I had a completely bogus play in there at one point, but Truss caught it.) I'm glad you liked it.

Zoner's answered this one, so I don't have to go far, except to say that it's a very cool show, one of my all-time favorites, and a character from it will be appearing in Christmas Rose.

I was halfway afraid, as I was re-reading it this morning, that Corwin would have... The Eyebrows. (Thankfully, he's just got spots.)

Well, yeah, but the car's not quite a character. (For trivia's sake, since Truss is doing it: in the UF universe, fifty Mark II Griffon limousines were built in 2041 by VR Labs to commemorate my UF self's fiftieth service anniversary. In 2404 there are ten left. :)

Corwin doesn't have the patience to maintain The Eyebrows. And he can't get his hair to do that without industrial-strength shellac. :)

Sylv isn't actually related to Kate and Corwin, btw - she's Zoner and Yuri's daughter. I know it seems like she is, since she's so close to Priss, but there you are. :)

Found it! Blame Doc for this:

Reika was out. She'd left this year, in search of Gryphon. {I hope she finds him...although, I think Ben'll be mildly surprised to find that he's...} He put the thought out of his mind. Although he'd found that out quite by accident, it wasn't really any of his business.

You might want to stick with the 'Gai' spelling... First thing that I thought of was 'Guy? From the old ADV^W^SoftCel release? Oh, wait, no..."

(For those to new - one of ADV's first titles was a semi-hentai title in 2 parts - Guy and Guy II. Later collected as 'Guy: Double Target. When they later started up the SoftCel imprint, Guy was one of the titles that got transferred there.)

Okay, now where exactly can you read into the sentence that UF Gryphon impregnated Reika with his love child? It could be read as any number of things.

Without going into too much detail, it's been established that Detians could prevent pregnancy by biocontrol (e.g., Kei). Considering the circumstances of that time period, it'd probably be in UF Gryphon's best interests to *not* leave behind a kid to suffer the slings and arrows against Ben's name, and exercise precautions.

At the time I wrote that passage, it was meant for something. The story arc may change where it could be interpreted for something else. Read into it whatever you may, I'm not telling. <grin>

Speaking of change, I'm going to have to revise some facts in the LY stories...minor ones, like backing up Keriyn's DOB about 10 years to take into account Salusian aging (which I wasn't aware of at the time), as well as the kids birthdays. More details, you ask? Sorry...that's all you're getting. ;-)

This is true, although it's also noted several times in the canon that Gryphon is notoriously bad at Detian conscious biocontrol, and has never been able to get it to do very much. (Thus, Kaitlyn after Crossroads.)

So it's perfectly plausible... I'm just not going to say one way or another. :)

Except in subconcious cases. (Re: The Shadow)

I want to read that story, if it exists/will exist. Kei's reaction alone would be worth the time spent. ^_^

Blessed be.

It does, yes, if the person attempting it is any good at biocontrol in the first place.

Just for reference, this has to show how much interest there is in every item Eyrie comes out with... this thread's logged about a post an hour on average since Gryph started it.
That might be a record.

Yow! Great stuff! More, more, more!

First of all, it's been a long while since I posted, I know...I just don't have the time to pay much attention to a board as active as this. But I wanted to say, excellent job! I adore SKU, and I think Utena's characterization was excellent in here.
I am curious on a couple points, however. While I'm not at all perturbed by the notion of Kaitlyn whipping up on that simp Saionji, is she supposed to be skilled enough to defeat the rest of the Seitokai? Like Miki, or even worse, Juri? I hope she's not invincible; that opens up the same can of worms that turned some people off from DJ Croft. I hope her skill is...well, I can't say 'realistic', since that final attack smacked of WL, (I'm not against this in the least) but at least balanced?
And on an entirely different note, while Utena and Kate might be cute together, it certainly seems that they'd lose a lot more than they gained--their friendship--if they tried something like that. Personally, I'd like to see Utena and Anthy reunited, preferably after defenestrating Akio from the Planetarium a few dozen times. Is there a chance that Utena will finally be with her destined beloved?

We won't know unless she has cause to try. I can tell you this: at 15, she's hardly a master of Katsujinkenryuu (the family kenjutsu form - yeah, I know, never mind what you read in Days of Miracle and Wonder, my research was less than half-baked when I wrote that).

The Storm of a Hundred Blades is a pretty basic technique for Katsujinkenryuu - after all, it's a martial art in an epic cinematic world. It's the equivalent of that thing Chun Li does when you hit the kick button a lot. :)

How do you defenestrate someone from a structure that lacks windows? I suppose it could be like Batman knocking that one fireman through the brick wall in Year One. ["You're the one... who tried to shoot the cat..."]

Say, that would be satisfying.

Ahem. *Asagiri* Katsujinkenryuu. Just in case there are any others roaming around out there.

(Yes, that's what *WAS*.. uh... something else before Gryph and I had a chat the other night and it mysteriously changed since. Hmmm. :)

Okay. I was just nervous about her being God (Dios?) or something with a zatoichi. I guess I've seen too many good fics ruined by that, and being a MU* staffer intensifies that twitchy feeling a lot. Sorry if I press too hard. =)

Of course, exactly what I was thinking. Now, lessee...that's three hits against anyone in Saionji's hex at Strength+Technique+Modifier-Stamina damage....*punches on a calculator*....Ow.

Sure it's got windows. What do you think those shutters slam over whenever Akio...erm....makes use of those white leather couches? They don't open, but hey, with enough force (where's Skuld and her mallet when you need her?) I'm sure Utena and Anthy could drop him out of one.

>
>Say, that would be satisfying.

It'd be even better if they could drop the Akio-car on top of him after he landed. But I'd be satisfied with a serious maiming.

There are more advanced (basically 'super combo') versions, the Storm of a Thousand Blades and the Storm of a Million Blades; but Kate's not advanced enough to be able to do those yet.

Well, those are more archways than windows, but I suppose it's close enough for gov't work. (What a terrible interior design decision. White couches? They're impossible to keep clean... )

Hey, I like the Ohtorimobile. It's got this wacky sort of impossible-but-familiar thing going on. "It's the latest model," he says. It's a '57 Corvette (Bow-Tie logo on the WonderBar AM radio and all), except no Corvette ever had a back seat (what the?! :). It's red with yellow wheels, which gives me flashbacks to that one part of Yellow Submarine. ("Just park it here." "I'll just park it here.") Like if my '62 Impala were suddenly a two-seater with a turbo. Funky, man, alternate world stuff. I dig it.

The way he drives it makes me crazy, though. He never shifts into any gear other than first. :)
