I like Washuu "Playing-with-Daddy" form. And I love Gamera! At least the flying turtle is in a decent story.

My only question is why is Santa who she is?

More will be explained if I ever write up 'The Wedding from Niflheim,' but put simply Washuu is Skuld's high priestess and longest-worshipping mortal in Midgard. It's probable that Skuld performs related chimney service for others in the leading UF families... but I don't know for certain.

Hmm...high priestess I get. Longest Worshipping mortal? I thought Washuu met Skuld after Belldany moved to Tomadachi...which would put it after Gryphon's introduction to her.

I won't beg too much for the wedding story...but I will say I've been looking forward to it since "Wilderness" came out.

Yeah, what she said.

I suppose you could explain that away by claiming that the Nutty Professor's been worshipping Our Lady of the Perpetual Upgrade without knowing it since long before they met - but that's kind of at odds with Washuu's own claim that she "got religion that day" in Twilight.

Actually, I didn't think UF-G's acquaintance counted as -worship- per se... there's a difference between groveling and begging for insights (as Washuu was reduced to in that first year) and saying, "hi Skuld, where's Morisato at?" }:-{D

Maybe... but he did pray to her during the Exile.

Not entirely at odds. Certainly, working at the lab is worshipping the God of Science even if you don't acknowledge that one exists. She certainly attacked science with religious fervor before she "got the religion" by finding out that such a diety existed.

And please don't go around calling Skuld "Our Lady of Perpetual Upgrade". That's the Microsoft marketing division. Skuld is closeer to "Our Lady of the Upgrade That Works"

What, you think she doesn't continually improve things, always striving to make things better? That she's willing to release a single improvement and then let it go at that? I think not...

Ooh! A schism! I should write up some points and nail them to a door someplace. :)

More likely she would nail you up someplace if you tried. Afterall if it doesn't matter to Odin Allfather...

Any way, she doesn't seem like the type to get bent out of shape if you don't worship her perfectly. She's a gweep and the patron saint of engineering. She know's there's no such thing as "perfect" only "not bad, could be better" or
"this will take more time than the last one to hack".

And if she was the jealous type, would she have let Utena ruffle Corwin's hair?

   >Yeah, this isn't Greek myth. ;-)

<rolls eyes> You know, I wrote that and then thought "oh no one would read that into it. Gross!"

Ah well, I was always a good straight man. For jokes! You people have the most twisted minds.....

What I meant was that mothers are traditionally very protective of their sons. And not necessarily in the Sophoclean sense. Many mothers (oh, say mine) are overwhelmingly protective of their young and jealous when those young start to stray from the nest. See, you don't have to have the mixed sex thing to have a mom who is a little jealous and unhappy when you develop friends or move out the house.

What that was supposed to tie into was the idea of Skuld, Techno-Goddess, in theory might think about her worshipers in a motherly sense. Kinda rolls with that whole "mother of god", "our father, art in heaven" concepts that tend to be tacked on deities.

But obviously if it takes me two paragraphs to explain one sentence I wasn't doing a very good job.

<sigh> I thought it was really endearing that Skuld was happy to encourage whatever is between Utena and Corwin. I only wish my family was like that. Instead I've got a family full of people like a***e t****u. <wince> Let me just say that I'm wishing Corwin all the best and that I hope Anthy will share.

Btw, let me just say that you have done the best job of describing courtship that I've ever read. Having been courted a few times, all I can say is that the emotions in the good ones were exactly like that. It reads naturally. <grin> and I esp. liked you slipped in the fact that Corwin is spending every free weekend in Worchester very, very delicately. I missed it on the first read. That too rings true. I'm amazed Corwin isn't going to pieces without her.

But back the main point. I was stomping my feet, and expressing outrage at the way Zoner and Gryphon twisted my innocuous statement that would have surely passed any censor's first read without a glitch. Hmmpf. Trust EPU to warp such innocent words.

<grin>
t.

who is rather glad the greek style drama is gone from the eyrie scene. Drama queens (which those greeks were in all senses of the phrase) get sooooo tiring.

* side note: I don't think Kevin (as portrayed) was a drama queen. His character far too cool for that.

   >See, you don't
>have to have the mixed sex thing to have a mom who is a little jealous
>and unhappy when you develop friends or move out the house.

That's true - but Skuld is kind of an unconventional mom. She spent her formative years in a house full of love, watching the courtship of her elder sister Bell and her beloved husband Keiichi. As a result, she's become very dialed into that whole "love is beautiful" thing (once she stopped trying to break them up out of petulant pre-teen jealousy :). And, since her effective age is still around 17, now that Cor's on the on-ramp to manhood, she's more like his elder sister/pal than his mother most of the time.

><sigh> I thought it was really endearing that Skuld was happy to
>encourage whatever is between Utena and Corwin. I only wish my family
>was like that. Instead I've got a family full of people like a***e
>t****u.

(blink)

I appreciate your trying to protect me from something, but I can't expand that enough to understand what you're even getting at...

At any rate, Skuld's definitely concerned about Corwin's future, and she keeps an eye on his friends and acquaintances - but she's a good judge of character, and Utena has many qualities that the leader of the Valkyrie would find admirable at a glance, so it didn't take her long to decide about this one. :)

>Btw, let me just say that you have done the best job of describing
>courtship that I've ever read. Having been courted a few times, all I
>can say is that the emotions in the good ones were exactly like that.
>It reads naturally.

Well, good. I'm glad I managed to evoke what I was after there. To tell the truth, that thread of the plot was originally conceived as kind of a cute background joke, but when I introduced the characters, it took on a life of its own. Now it's totally out of control, and wreaking havoc up and down the timestream, which is the price I pay for building things out of order. :)

><grin> and I esp. liked you slipped in the fact
>that Corwin is spending every free weekend in Worchester very, very
>delicately. I missed it on the first read. That too rings true. I'm
>amazed Corwin isn't going to pieces without her.

He can keep it together for a week or two at a time, with effort (and he's helped by the fact that he has not yet completely grasped what's actually happening to him :). Now, his workshop is going to pieces without Dorothy, but that's another problem altogether. :)

>But back the main point. I was stomping my feet, and expressing
>outrage at the way Zoner and Gryphon twisted my innocuous statement

Hmm. Maybe that should be our new slogan:

EPU: We Can Make Anything Be About Sex.

>* side note: I don't think Kevin (as portrayed) was a drama queen.
>His character far too cool for that.

He sure was one in person. Whoo-wee!

Cool guy, though, even so. I miss him sometimes.

I'd argue that. The 101st is a hell of a lot more subtle.

It seems unlikely. As I've mentioned before elsewhere on these boards, I've found, on the occasions when I've attempted it, that I am unable to produce material beyond an R rating which meets my self-imposed quality standards. I end up just feeling silly about the whole thing. There have been a couple of occasions when I've tested the corner of the envelope a bit, but by and large it remains an arena I don't feel comfortable entering.

That said, I've set myself up for an interesting challenge, since I now have three or four pieces of actual, important character development planned which require a closer examination of the subject than has heretofore been common in my work. This is part of the price of importing characters from a progam as charged with sexuality as Revolutionary Girl Utena, I suppose.

It ought to be interesting, anyway.

Well, I enjoy well written erotica - and I can even get into mediocre erotica. But bad erotica is some of the worst material I've ever seen. And I haven't been happy with the few attempts I've made at writing such a scene. I can picture it, and in the past when I've had an SO to 'talk dirty' too I've been told I can produce some nice imagery... but when I try to put it in text I don't like it. The only erotica I've really shown to others are stories I've written for an SO when I'm in an LDR or the like. They've been, um, well received - but I've been too reserved to do anything more public.

I also have a thing about gratuitous sex in fiction - if it doesn't further the story in some way, I don't see why it should be there. I also kind of like leaving things up to the reader's imagination.

Though, as Gryph said, we've been plotting some scenes that will probably require pushing the limits of where we've gone with respect to sex in our stories. (Despite his 'I' - we've actually been developing the scenes jointly.)

>really, I'm not feeling any side effects from a 2000 mile separation

Hey, you at least *have* an SO - and even with 2000 miles there is the phone, email, etc. (No, I'm not really bitter, just in a funk.)

From everything I've ever seen in your writings, the need for explicit writings hasn't been there, at least not yet. I get the impression that if it's needed, you'll write it. If not, you wont. There's been plenty of opportunity, but the lack of gratuitousness has only made the few pieces that have been written much better received.

I look forward to wherever the stories go :)

Amen. Having recently turned to said literature for, um, relief, I'm always amused when I find that I've followed the non-sex subpolot and skipped the sex because the subplot is much more interesting. That happened on Monday. I still haven't read the sex scene yet, but I've re-read the rest of the piece twice.

Now, I've been hit on by men a number of times over the years, and while I don't swing that way I generally find it a compliment that another human being has found be attractive in some way. And I'm secure enough in myself not to flip out like some...

I would like to state for the record that the rest of us didn't need it either.

<grin> Of course not, but it might have caused rampant speculation among the Utena-impaired. Or the Megazone-impaired as well.

'Sides, while your preferences seem to be pretty well documented, I wouldn't want to exclude any possibilities. The title had that fun gender-bending quality to it.

Well, when I bother to self-label I usually say something like "het so far" - being Discordian I know better than to speak in absolutes about the future. That's just asking for a big bitch slap from Eris.

DCForum does have a nasty-word catcher, but it's not turned on. (Just for laughs, I had it set to filter out "Microsoft" at one point. :) It's a simple thing that just replaces all but the first letter of the affected word with asterisks. I'd prefer it if it just replaced the vowels, if only because the Tank Girl comics taught me that, occasionally, "f*ck" seems like a dirtier word than "fuck" just because of the comically transparent censoring. :)

Yep, just like how one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV was the scene from the first episode of South Park when Kyle screams at the aliens.

"Hey you scrawny-eyed <bleep bleep>! What the <bleep> is wrong with you?! You must be some kind of <bleep bleep> to be able to ignore a crying child! You know what you like?! You like to <bleep bleep> and <bleeep bleeeeeeeeeeeep> a <bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep> in <bleeeeeeeeeeep bleeeeep bleeeeeeeeeeeeep> s- <bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep>!"
"Hey, Wendy, what's a <bleep bleep>?"

It wouldn't be nearly as funny if he wasn't bleeped out. (In fact, they'd have to work a lot harder to make it funny at all.

Hope? Of course. Expect? Yeah, after all, when the author expresses displeasure at an idea it doesn't tend to appear. Rule Out? Nope. Polytheistic mythos have involved many MANY 'ew' moments, incest being not as high on the list as some others <IMHO YMMV>

On a tangential note, a 'jealous' mother may not have 'designs' on their offspring, but often she will still chase off potential mates as 'not good enough for my baby'

Indeed, I still remember disrupting my sophomore-year English class by lurching to my feet and blurting, "A swan?!?!?" during a class-period reading assignment involving the many adventures of Zeus.

(I believe it was incidents like that which led Zoner to half-jokingly say in this very thread, "Yeah, it's not Greek myth." :)

Oh, and I'd just like to take this moment to go "Ha!" at your assertion that authorial displeasure with a concept prevents that concept from prevailing. Sometimes true, perhaps even often - but nowhere near reliable enough to base an axiom on. I didn't particularly like the way the middle of Christmas Rose turned out events-wise (though I am quite pleased with the execution), just to name one relatively recent example.

>On a tangential note, a 'jealous' mother may not have 'designs' on

This is true, and granted; but it's certainly not an issue in the case in question. Skuld's rather taken a shine to Our Heroine. :)

Nice touch. Although I have to admit, Wapiko thinking of Washuu's adult form as Playing-with-Daddy body is kinda odd. She's seen things like that, but never had the strangers talk? Guess it proves Washuu is her mother.

Nice work with Gamera. It seems that unless you're an idiot criminal, no one is immune to the charms of the Overstreet daughter.

Partly, but it's also because, -heretofore,- W&K have assumed that any strangers with ill intent will need to be protected from -Wapiko.-

Wapiko's actual lesson about the facts of life comes at six years old, on a summer visit to the house in Texas. (I made this story up years ago, but cannot think of any possible story to drop it in, so here it is.)

One day Wapiko looks out the window into the yard and sees two jackrabbits, well, multiplying. }:-{D

Wapiko, not having been told about this by anyone, goes and asks her mother what the rabbits are doing. Washuu replies by saying that they are making babies, and that most mammalian species do it in such-and-so a way, and describes basic mechanics. (Advanced studies will come later, and in much greater detail, when Wapiko's able to absorb the knowledge. Say, age eight.)

Wapiko listens carefully, thanks her mother, and then goes out front to cheer the rabbits on. "GO RABBITS! GO RABBITS! MAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF BABIES! YAAAAAAAAAY RABBITS!"

It was thereafter decided that, if and when any more children should come along, the -Redneck- would be the one to handle the Birds & Bees talk. }:-{D

>Nice work with Gamera. It seems that unless you're an idiot criminal,
>no one is immune to the charms of the Overstreet daughter.

Well, the 'charm' doesn't work on humans per se. Charley's affected because she's a cute little girl, and he babbles and gets himself in trouble. The various animals around Wapiko are charmed because, well, she's Wapiko, and they wat to be nice to her.

Probably the best place to tell that stouf 'in universe' would be Washuu inflicting the tale on a teenaged Wapiko, as in 'and that's how you found out about the birds & the bees'.

Sounds a tiny bit like how my Mom explained it to me (according to her memory anyway) except I was five and there weren't any rabbits. Some kid back in... different school system, year BEFORE first grade I think... asked where babies come from in class, and while the teacher tried to figure out what to say, I allegedly stood up and answered him.

Ye gods (and goddesses, of course, can't forget Skuld!), I haven't laughed so hard in weeks. Wapiko's definitely her mother's daughter.

I also noticed another throwaway reference to the Utoniums. (Utonia?) Are they ever going to show up in person, or are y'all just going to keep teasing us?

Nitpick:

Citizens of Galveston, Brazoria, Harris, Chambers, and Liberty counties are to be on the lookout for this creature, shown here setting fire to an abandoned petroleum refinery in Lake Jackson.

Unless something's changed since I moved to Baton Rouge in January 1999, I don't seem to remember any refineries in Lake Jackson. All the plants and refineries and such are technically in Freeport and the surrounding really tiny towns. (Of course, considering how pathetically small every city in Brazoria County is, it really doesn't make much difference.) I lived there for about ten years and my dad worked at BASF's plant in Freeport; I know far more about the chemical industry than I ever wanted to.

Good story though, and I'm still amazed that anyone who doesn't live in Lake Jackson knows that it exists.

Well, now, that would depend on who you been talkin' to, now wouldn't it? :)

Mind you, I don't support the methods or madness of the Republic of Texas, but the fact that I was born and raised in a state that was its own country for a while is still pretty, darn keen. Wouldn't you say, Kris?

On topic, nice story. I wonder, though, if the Redneck has been reading any O. Henry recently? Or perhaps, his father read him the tale of "The Ransom of Red Chief" when he was young. Charley and Harvey seem awfully familiar, and despite the difference of manner, they did get the same walloping that Bill and Sam received.

For those of you who haven't read this classic, check http://ppl.nhmccd.edu/~dcox/ohenry/ransom.html. It's not long.

   >Mind you, I don't support the methods or madness of the Republic of
>Texas,

Note: There have been, since 1992, no less than four groups claiming to be the provisional government of the Republic of Texas. Lance McLaren's group, who had the standoff in the Ft. Davis Mountains, was the founder of all of these groups, all of which but his core later disowning him. Most of the less lunatic RoT people have moved on to a new project, "Texas Constitution 2000," which is a thinly disguised secession document which they want to have 2/3 of Texas' counties ratify. Problem is, the smallest 2/3 by population of Texas counties only contain a total of 4% of their population. I oppose them because, even if they manage to realize their delusions, their independence will last just as long as it takes to have the Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico National Guards to roll down Congress Ave. in Austin.

> but the fact that I was born and raised in a state that was its

A state with its own independence day, its own declaration of independence, and possibly the most hallowed battlefield in the USA... yeah, it's cool.

I had it in lit class a couple times in middle and high school. It wasn't in my mind at all during this. Harvey and Charley are comic relief, not the main protagonists (as in Ransom), and their suffering is not ironic turnabout but well-earned karmic retribution.

(Incidentally, the O Henry museum is in Austin, and it hosts a national pun championship every May.)

At the moment, you'd be right...

> All the

Presuming Freeport and such towns still existed. Freeport pretty much ceased to exist during the Fourth World War, and the Third Texas Revolution finished it off. The oil companies rebuilt further inland, and since they already owned most of Lake Jackson...

(For those who don't know, Lake Jackson is one of the few towns to survive which was begun as a work camp for an oil field. It's a little less than ten miles further inland than Freeport, and about the same size. Both lie about sixty miles south of Houston, which Gaos overflew in the story en route to the story.)

They'd have to fight the Baptist Church for it, I think. (Though obviously, the Baptists lost in UF. Can't say I'm too disappointed.) Y'know, I almost miss living there... almost.

Of course, now curious me has to know how you know of it, since it's not really on the way to anywhere, nor is it significant in its own right.

I've lived in Texas all my statistally significant life; it was sheer accident that I was born outside it.

I know of Lake Jackson for the same reasons you might know of Cleveland, oor New Caney, or Conroe, or Liberty; they're small to mid size towns on the periphery of the Houston area, and as such a person living in one may have call to go to another for some reason.

Also, my father worked construction all over the Houston area for Brown & Root and KCI, so I got to hear a lot about various places.

Ha! That was a fun read. Made my day.

Humm. Washuu in chain mail... <image> Oh my!

I've only seen a couple of Gamera movies, but I thought the ones I've seen were pretty good, in a bad sort of way. There have been worse monster movie series.

As for Wapiko... Wow. Good thing she's a happy little kid, or she'd be REAL trouble.

Kinda reminds me of Ivy and the baby Gap Dragon. "What a cute little pet baby dragon!" "Ah? Huh? Uhh, well, I guess so..."

And if it's not my friends or the TV (goddamnoisybox) putting the thought of donuts in my head it's fanfics suggesting ice cream. Humm, I wonder if Furrs still has any Blue Bunny... Cookies and Cream, eh? Well, I'll try.

I recognized the refference, et all, but somehow I could only Imagine Washuu in adult form (I missed ep 8 ova) in a Red version of Beiko's armor. Still, the second thought that poped in my head was.... "Could Phil draw a picture of this for us all???"

Only after that did the great gags like Jigglypuffs, "I don't have time to play Timmy fell down the well", Etc, (funny, I never thought Washuu for liking her toes nibbled)

That and As soon as I saw Harvey and charley, I saw the punchline... sort of. Actually, the first thinkg I thought of was Arn't they lucky This is Wapiko, not the w'harners. Not that it helped them that much in the end...

Ranger Smith, huh? Now why do I see Gamera turning to Geos and saying "I don't think the ranger is going to like this?"

Don't hold your breath. Still, as a substitute, he's a pic Fred Perry drew on commission for me in '99 featuring adult-mode Washuu. Phil colored it.

>Only after that did the great gags like Jigglypuffs, "I don't have
>time to play Timmy fell down the well", Etc, (funny, I never thought
>Washuu for liking her toes nibbled)

Among other things nibbled, yes... }:-{D

Actually, that wasn't the imagery I -quite- had in mind, but whatever works for the reader.

>That and As soon as I saw Harvey and charley, I saw the punchline...
>sort of. Actually, the first thinkg I thought of was Arn't they lucky
>This is Wapiko, not the w'harners. Not that it helped them that much

They would have been in less pain with the W'harnyrs. "The Ransom of Red Chief" this was not.

>Ranger Smith, huh? Now why do I see Gamera turning to Geos and saying
>"I don't think the ranger is going to like this?"

That's the joke in Washuu and UF-Red's minds. Officer John Smith, Texas Rangers, isn't a park ranger, has never seen the old H-B shorts, and is not really smarter than the average Ranger. }:-{D

Since he is not a park ranger, of course, Gamera is not going to stay around.

Funny, the image comes up fine on the school computers, but if I click on the link to WLP, the networks security kicks in. It seems to love pissing me off.

The WLP main pages have coding in the headers that triggers several filter programs for content. All of WLP's HTML pages are keyed as either Mature or Adult (and there is a screening of some sort before entering any adult section).

If you can see the image, but not the website itself, then the school's computer is probably blocking the site.

Okay, let's try to get around the auto-embedding here.

Go to:

www.wlpcomics.com

Once there, add the following onto the URL:

washusan_cc

and then tack on

.jpg

and send your browser -there.-

Let's see if that works (the image is a JPEG).

Personally, I hope not. I like Pokemon because it has no pretensions towards being anything other than a hokey, silly kiddy show. Digimon, to me, has all of Pokemon's flaws and none of its charm.

However, I ain't the man with the vote here, and if someone comes up with an -interesting- use for 'em...

It seems unlikely, as such. I'm sure pieces of companion/utility software coded to seem like various species of pokemon, among other domesticated creatures, are quite common as it is, though.

That, I think, we can chalk up to Washuu's tinkering... Though if it did, I'm certain Redneck would die quite happy. Isn't it nice to have a mad genius with forsight?

Goodness, I can see her in an Iczer outfit from there... Thank Skuld she's married now. I can also see why she prefers to stay in 'child' mode... it must get awful boring having to club away the legions of lawyers who want to get their hands on her affadavits. :p

Sorry, I was half asleep when I read the story, and apparently 3/4 asleep when I posted... Well, East Texas is a bit out of the territory I've personally explored. Amarillo's about the furthest into Texas as I've ever gotten.
