"Character Themes"

Point: is has been established that Saionji's theme is the Beatles - Getting Better.

Point: the one SotS part that _didn't_ introduce a major character had an istrumental ending.

Point: "She had legs that never ended/I was halfway paralyzed/she was tall and cool and pretty" Now, I've no clue who Jeanie Shrimpton is, but if that bit isn't Juri to a T, I'll join the Marines.

Point: I'm less sure of this than the others, but Time Won't Let Me would, I think, work well for Utena.

Point: Likewise the above, but with Don't Stop Believing for Miki

So, am I right, and do the other charas have their own themes?

Blessed be.

Well, hey, check out that last verse.

>Point: the one SotS part that _didn't_ introduce a major character had

So what's Miki, then - chopped liver?

>Point: "She had legs that never ended/I was halfway paralyzed/she was

>but if that bit isn't Juri to a T, I'll join the Marines.

Heh. Jean Shrimpton was a model who was very popular in the late sixties and early seventies; if I recall correctly, the thing that made her notable was that she was very tall for a model by the standards of the time. Her hairstyle didn't look a thing like Juri's, but then mapping pop songs onto fictional characters is rarely an exact science. I don't know as I'd say "Behind the Wall of Sleep" is Juri's Theme per se, but it's certainly meant to evoke her in this context.

>Point: I'm less sure of this than the others, but Time Won't Let Me
>would, I think, work well for Utena.

That was the general intent, yeah. As with the above cue, "Time Won't Let Me" isn't Utena's Theme per se, but it's a song that's about her situation at the end of Wounded Rose, for sure.

>Point: Likewise the above, but with Don't Stop Believing for Miki

This one was intended to be more general, for the character group as a whole - they've all got things they need to hold onto belief in, to get through the day.

>So, am I right, and do the other charas have their own themes?

You're partially right, and most characters have a theme. Musical associations with scenes, characters and whatnot is a fairly common thing in my works; check out the playlists for the NXE Meta-Original Soundtrack and Image Collections over in that series' board for more examples.

Now, if you're asking for individual examples, I'll have to give that some thought. Perhaps I should compose a Symphony MOSAIC.

Why can't I ever get my facts straight?

Okay, ignore that, I'm wrong.

Yeah, that was part of my reason for bringing this up...

You, by the way, are evil, as I now have yet another band whose CDs I must buy When I Have The Money. ;b

This thread got me thinking. Why do I have the feeling that if Touga had a theme in SOS it would be Queen's Gimmie the Prize. He just seems that type.

Touga's not really as... mm... vehement as all that. (That's more Saionji when he's got his crazy-tiny-Ozzy-Osbourne-on-crack eyeball action going on. Because Kate got to see him that way once before he Got Better, the Art of Noise will be making a tongue-in-cheek dedication of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" to the S-man in the next installment. :) Touga thinks he's smooooooth. "Hey Baby, Is This Guy Bothering You? (I'm the Greatest Swordsman in Cephiro)" would be about right, if such a song existed. :)

(Yes. I do enjoy the parenthetical title style, especially when used for comedy purposes. I once considered making a mix tape consisting entirely of songs with parenthetical titles. It was going to have sides named "(If This is Side One) Then" and "This Must Be (Side Two)", with the songs on the sides arranged by title according to a scheme that ought to be obvious. :)

You know Gryph, all of this brings up a question that didn't surface till I was reading this half asleep...

We know people in SOS have themes... what are Yours and Zoners?

(shrug) We don't appear that much, especially me... so I hadn't thought about it much.

I have been tinkering with a Symphony MOSAIC, but I won't be able to do anything really useful about that while I'm on the road. Can't rifle through the boxes of CDs 'til I get home...

you have remembered me that there are some things that are better mixed on tape and not on CD's. Time I start working on that.

Pangaro, I haven't made a mix tape in almost a year

No, that's Akio Ohtori. Well, if I'm following his motivations right, anywho.

Akio is a very complex character, rich and varied in the facets and depths of his kaleidoscopic awfulness. Pinning him with a single song is quite a challenge.

How about the Peer Gynt Suite? Not a single song, but a single, cohesive, complex piece of music.

Or acrobat, by U2.

A Ohtori Academy student dies in an accident and is walking around in heaven. As he walks, he sees famous people about. Then he sees Akio Ohtori walk by. He looks to a nearby angel and exclaims, "I didn't know HE was dead!"

"No, child... that was God. He just likes to THINK He's Akio Ohtori."
