Well, you haven't seen the anime with that sword because there isn't one. It's from here -- and from Gryph's personal collection. :)

Truss, thanks for the link. It's lovely. Gryph, you are sooo lucky. Does this mean you have been trained in a kendo form?

Yet, I still think there's an anime put out by AD Vision called Kotetsu about a young girl and her sword. Or is my japanese so rusty that I haven't realized what kotetsu means?

No... it just means I like swords and spend money unwisely. I'd like to have studied kendo, but there aren't any kendo dojos in the wilds of Maine, and now I'm too old/fat/lazy/timid/unmotivated to start.

"kotetsu" just means "made of iron" or such-like. "Kotetsu no Sasayaki" means "Iron Whisper".

   >>Quick question, why and how did Kaitlyn get "Kotetsu no Sasayaki".

She was given the sword by her kenjutsu master (that would be her father) when she advanced to the journeywoman phase of her Asagiri Katsujinkenryuu training. He, in turn, acquired it from a Hibernian weaponsmith named Dannen Ironbridge, a maker of fine and beautiful blades, by the usual method. (At the time, Corwin was not yet a qualified weaponsmith. I'm sure he wants to make Kate a sword, but as she doesn't particularly need another one, he'll just have to wait. :)

This would have been sometime during her freshman year at the Institute, since it's mentioned she didn't have the blade yet during the previous summer.

I mean, when I was in high school, you couldn't wear shorts that where higher then your knees, unless you where on the track team/swim team and going to/coming from a meet/practice.)

Yes, but then how do I quote something within the quote?

Perhaps a disclaimer of some kind. The content in this signature may be ignored freely, and probably has no bearing on the situation except it springing into Eliot's mind.

You've been on the boards longer. QED.

Although, in real life, you're probably older than me, considering that everyone is. My friends, my family, my girlfriend, my boss... there isn't a person alive that isn't older than I am, I'm starting to think.

I'm younger than 90% of the people on these boards. I try not to let it bug me. ;>

Hey, by the math, you and 19 other people are younger than me. But I'm still down there.

Still, I'm pretty sure that A) Trigger is older than I am in real life, and B) I've been on the boards longer than her. Which is kind of ironic, I guess.

I'm sure there are members of the faculty who do not entirely approve of Utena's wardrobe, but they can't do anything about it. It's an approved uniform, it came from the bookstore autotailor; there's nothing more to be done.

On the Institute's young men, they're almost exactly the same, but somehow they don't quite hang the same way. :)

Well, he does wear the shorts version of the uniform in warm weather, but his isn't tailored quite like that. :)

Well, keep in mind that Utena is slightly hampered in things like trying to get shorts and skirts to fit correctly; mortal clothing is not engineered to account for legs that go slightly more than all the way up. :)

Utena isn't particularly hung up about people looking at her. She seems to take it all in stride. It's one of the many things I like about her - I figure a character with legs like that, who tends to dress the way she does, has no business being irritated if people look. :)

Indeed... I wasn't able to truly recognize Utena (But I figured it was her) till I looked at the full size version, but that was also because she now wears the WPI male summer uniform... Unless its below 30f. However, the second I saw Kate, I *Knew* it could be no one else BUT her.

All in all, very much the high quality of work we've come to know and love from Phil, IMO.

I have only 1 request... Phil, if you have time, I'd love to see a group pick of the AoN/Duelists club/IBGF. I know others would love to see things like a Hutchinson Family pick, or other such, and I wouldn't mind either, but I'd LOVE to see AoN First!@!

>I have only 1 request... Phil, if you have time, I'd love to see a
>group pick of the AoN/Duelists club/IBGF.

This would be kind of tricky, since:

a) If it were the entire Duelists' Society and friends - essentially the entire cast of the Symphony to date - that would be a hell of a lot of characters in one picture; and

b) it would require us to hammer out designs for six characters (Corwin, Devlin, Amanda, Azalynn, Moose, and T'skaia) who aren't borrowed from anything (well, five and a half, "start with Kaolla Suu, then modify for flavor" makes designing Azalynn easier than, say, Amanda Dessler), which is a tricky thing to do remotely, especially given Phil's limited spare-time reserves. It'd be easier if I wasn't a George Lucas-like control freak as to what my characters look like, but there you are. :)

He nailed Kate with a single reference image, though, so maybe it wouldn't be such a problem. Still, a lot of work for a guy without a lot of spare time; even just the band would call for four (3-1/2?) new designs.

(There's a reason why most of the SOS art requests I've made so far involve the borrowed characters rather than the original ones... )

Mind you, I'd love to see it too, enough so that if Phil had a free block of time and wanted to designate it as Art Consultation Time, I'd be figuring out my gas mileage to Maryland. But I hesitate to impose to the degree of asking for something like that, since it's his time, not mine.

>I know others would love
>to see things like a Hutchinson Family

Well, that's nice and all, but who the hell are the Hutchinsons, and what do they have to do with anything? (I'd smiley, except that this actually does bug the hell out of me when people do it. It's more irritating even than the whole "Worchester" thing, because, dammit, it's my Name... :)

Aren't they the clan that clan Macleod would confuse with yours, forcing your family to flee Scotland?

"'We left Scotland sometime in the 1500s. Family legend has it we were sick of getting beaten up by the Macleods for stuff the Hutchinsons did.'"

I like family legends.

The question I've had since seeing the anime is, is she literally a princess, or is that a narrative story-telling device to enhance the "fairy tale" aspect of the story? Peg and I have debated this one a few times, with no real conclusion.

In the world of Utena, being a prince or princess apparently has nothing to do with birth or lineage - it's a state of being. It's another one of the show's pervasive metaphors.

Oddly enough, I just read my e-mail news thing that I don't normally read for months on end, and some Republican fellow named Hutchinson got appointed to Chief of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and I read it and thought about this thread, which I'd read earlier. He's against medicinal marijuana, which, as a cancer patient, makes me want to beat him up too.

   Phil,

I would like you to know that your artwork inspired the wierdiest waking dream I've ever had.

I've this awful 2hr commute from work to home, with 1.5 hrs on the train. The train cars are kinda wierd - they have the a set of doors to the outside, right in the middle of the train. While the cars are the size of an Amtrak car, they doors are located in the same places you'd find exits in light transit such as Muni, CTA, or the T. Passangers risk life and twisted ankles passing between the cars through a little doorway (do not even think about getting full sized luggage through that!) and over a suspension bridge of what appears to be chains and metal.

I was sitting on the train last night, when I suddenly saw Utena and Kaitlyn in the seat across from me. They were chatting, when Utena suddenly looked intently at the doors that lead to the foyer (middle) of the train car. She turned paler (if possible) and stood up.

She got out of the seat, looked down the aisle towards the doors between the cars, and said to Kaitlyn, "Get ready to run".

Kait sort of goggled, then got behind her and moved towards the little door that leads to the next car, zaitochi in hand.

Utena whipped out Thorn of the Rose, and held it in a fencers "ready" pose, pointing right towards the exit.

The doors slid open, and Akio walked in with a superior look upon his face.

Utena charged foward, shouting, and then (much like the dojo scene) blew him out back through the doors, and through the set of doors leading to the other side of the car.

She was standing six feet from where she started, with Thorn back in it's sheath. Then she whirled, ran back to Kaitlyn, they wrenched the tiny connecting door open, dashed across the chain bridge and into the next car.

Then I woke up, half expecting Akio to come charging through. I don't know how they escaped that one. It being a moving train and all. I rather suspect they slipped out an emergency window when the train stopped, but I had this awful feeling that Touga was waiting for them.

Best dream I've had all week.

many thanks for the inspiration,
t.

Well then, you're welcome, though I should think gryphon should get
at least part of the credit here, given that he's written the sheer
majority of the text of Symphony of the Sword so far... :)

But I'm glad to have helped out in people's dream sequences, and I know
where you're coming from, as I have a cast inside my head that tends to
provide running commentary on just about everything I do... (oi.)

And to answer various folks in the thread about the possiblity of more SOS
semiofficial fanart, rest assured, there will be more in time. However,
remember Rule #1 of the Eyrie Forums, and Rule #2 of the Eyrie Forums, and
all will be well.

(Though, I will be nice and state that part of the reason my artwork output
is so slow at times is because it's part dependant on inspiration, and part
dependant on sheer time. When one has about 17 drawn and commissioned
things to color after Otakon when one is also fulltime online roleplaying in
an Amber campaign, time becomes rather stretched. But that's the way the
badger bounces...)

I think I need to move into Phil's Universe. In the universe I'm in, badgers are ill-tempered beasts and do not bounce under most conditions.

His sounds much more ammusingly weird.

Um, no, in this case, said badgers were rather ill-tempered, and
the reasons they were bouncing were because my character and the
ones accompanying her were trying to kill them off because the
lead giant badger had just bit off the other PC's legs and arm
to get at the Jewel of Judgement, which she was using at the time.

But then right afterwards, my character had just shot off the
hindquarters of said evil chaosian badger with an Apocalyptic
Damage weapon, and then one of the NPC's ran it through with
a Patternblade and gouged its eyes out, so it all ended well.

Scratch one Lord of Chaos who didn't know to run when the Logrus
had been massively turned off in the Shadow in question...

But that's neither here nor there (and rather off-topic at that),
so I think I'll just leave it at that. ^_^

Ah, yes. A Fight Club reference.
What about 'the nth rule of Eyrie Forums is: There is no nth rule.'

Also thanks to Phil's semioffical UF fanart of the 'Daytona from hell' I now know what a Daytona looks like. For some reason I've been seeing it as small SUV, not as how it really is a Mazda 323/Ford Laser/Mitsubishi Lancer/GM Astra-like hatchback.

I'm very grateful to Gryph for SOS. It has made me very happy. The writing, the protagonists, the supporting cast make it an amazingly fun read.

But, you, my dear sir, let me see what Kaitlyn and Utena look like. Different, but not all that different from what I pictured. It was like seeing and old friend after a long absence.

The dream hasn't come back, but I had this _weird_ picture of the ladies escaping dressed as Kei and Yuri. after all, if Kei and Yuri are best selling action figures, some one out there has a comic book store/costume place. I think Kait busted open an emergency window using her martial arts. Is there a mall near a train station in massachuetts? Ideally between Worchester and Boston...

Imagine, Utena dressed as Kei (With wig, colored contacts, and cosmic rod), Kaitlyn as Yuri (wig, contacts, although she keeps the glasses). I figure Kaitlyn as Kei is too easy --it's supposed to be a disguise...

And they don't look quite right. It is off the shelf costuming.

Oh, and they're wearing the EOJ clothing. Substitue the WPI t-shirt for an EOJ t-shirt featuring the real EOJ volk. Their swords are hung inside Kait's trenchcoat. I couldn't figure out how to hide Thorn in the Cosmic Rod look alike.

I like Utena and Kait too much to put them in the plastic bikinis...

Wasn't disagreeing, just pointing out that you are a lech, who will wind up the same age (apparent) as the freinds that said daughter will be bringing home in a few years...Kei needs a shorter leash. ;-)

They're already close enough for it to make Our Hero feel really old by interacting with him as a member of a different generation. If G actually were his apparent age, he wouldn't mind being in, say, Corwin's place - the cognitive dissonance this creates could be mined for comedy value if I felt like focusing on the elders that much. As for Kei, well... I won't get into the reasons why she doesn't particularly need a leash at all. It'd be complicated and probably not useful to explain anyway. :)

Or perhaps being accosted by panhandlers. "Hey mistah, got any change?" (see "UHF" with Weird Al for the reference). Or do they have panhandlers in the Boston Light Rail stations? Seeing as I live in a city without a proper subway, I have no basis for comparison (although Dallas Area Light Rail is evidently very good for saving gas).

In some of the subway stations, yes. I've never seen one at a Commuter Rail station, but then I don't use the Commuter Rail system nearly as often.

One tends to find panhandlers more often on the street corners in Cambridge/Boston; I suspect the cops don't hassle them as much there as if they were hanging around in the actual subway stations.
