I heard you on the wireless back in fifty-two
Lying awake intently tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through
They took the credit for your second symphony
Rewritten by machine on new technology
And now I understand the problems you could see
I've met your children
What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Pictures came and broke your heart

And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go
You were the first one
You are the last one

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone too far

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone too far
Pictures came and broke your heart
Put all the blame on VTR

You are a radio star
You are a radio star

I heard it for the first time on my road trip to the Minnesota State fair, earlier this year. I immediately thought of the Symphony and felt better, like I'd just downed a liter of ice cold dew.

If you think Canada's cool, just try Minnesota. They believe in _rock and roll_ there. Not just that alternative stuff. People can hold a beat. Bon Jovi (pre 1992) is played. I heard Metallica. They wear jeans that are _dark blue_. They eat fried cheese curds without guilt. Their air is clean. Everyone drives pickups. They are all unfailingly polite.

Hell, they have the only Kurdish restaurant in the country, an amazing set of vietnamese restarants, fashionables like garison kellior, and yet every year thousands turn out to watch young girls' faces be carved in butter. Lifesized, classical depictions, in butter.

I watched a group clog to "The Devil came down to Georgia" in bright red-seqiuned jumpsuites. They let you shoot cross bows with real arrows at the state fair. There is no democratic party in Minnesota, only the Farmer Democrats who are closely allied with the Farmer Independents who are often allied with the Farmer Republicans who won't have anything to do with the National Republican party.

One of the many, many reasons us car nuts feel a migratory draw towards Arizona and Nevada.
The localized near-extinction of rust being another.
The fact that KHP cars are rather sparse and easy to spot in Death Valley being yet another.

Ah, but over the Pennines you have a posted speed limit of 50mph, roads not wide enough for a lane either way visibility of 100m at best and preactically no police presence.

My dad hit 90 on those in a hatchback once 'to show me how do drive in a hurry'. I haven't driven in over a year and I fully intend to extend that record. Care to guess why?

Well, from what I've heard Minnesota used to have what was essentially "during the day, as fast as you want, just don't hit anything."

I think you're thinking of Montana - which stills does have such a rule. Well, almost - the rule is for a 'reasonably prudent speed'.

Reading an article on that a year or two ago, there was a quote from a Montana State Trooper something along the lines of "If we see Bob go by in a beat up pickup going 90, we'll probably stop him. If we see Mario Andretti go by in a Ferrari going 125, we wouldn't."

Basically it is up to the cop to evaluate the variables - the road, the weather conditions, the vehicle, and the apparent skill of the driver (ie, how well the driver is controlling things).

That reminds me of this guy from Australia that I met on a train some years back. Especially this one thing he said: "It's the most amazing thing about Germany you can say: YOU CAN DRIVE AS FAST AS YOU WANT!!!"

Yeah, someday when I'm rich I want to order a new Saab and use their "pick it up in Tröllhatten, drive it all the hell over Europe, then put it on a ship in England and take it home" plan. Sounds like a good way to kill a year or so...

When I first read your post my thought was "70 Km/h? 85 Km/h? Over here we have legal speeds of 160", then I remembered that you use mph.

One of the best ways to mess with the minds of drunk and/or stoned people (which, granted, is like shooting fish in a barrel) is to be driving a car with a digital speedometer, and get to about 70 or 75 and hit the switch to go over to km/h.

A good friend of mine is a staff writer for Fast Bikes magazine, and so gets to play with all the new toys. Last year, when the new Ducati line came out, he let me go round the track a few times on the test model...coming out of turn 3, into the straight, I look down at the tach, and then notice the speed right next to it. 197 it says...took me a good 15 seconds to remember that this is an italian bike. It's gonna use klicks....but I thought I was gonna die for a sec there...

Given that Durandal doesn't speak, only communicates via text displays, that would be somewhat problematic.

A damn fine song from a damn fine album; if you enjoy "Video Killed the Radio Star" but aren't familiar with any other songs by the Buggles, go pick up a copy of their album _The Age of Plastic_. You know you want to. (Alas, I'm still trying to find a copy of their other album, _Adventures in Modern Recording_.

Also, as far as covers go, there is an amazing cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star" by Lolita No. 18, an all-female Japanese punk band on the all-powerful Sister Records label. Blazing guitar-fu, some rather odd, rather high-pitched vocals, and a tremendous amount of energy make for one hell of a version of this song - and you can rock out to it! Even better is the video they made for it, available on the Lolita No. 18 10th Anniversary Video Collection. The Collection itself is a thing of joy, including a couple more covers (a joyful, blaring version of "Summertime Blues" and a hella-fun version of "Rockaway Beach", with help from their pal Joey Ramone!) to go along with some of their original songs (such as "Saloon", which combines particularly bouncy concert footage with shots of the band in frog masks bopping around a traditional Japanese village, all held together with a black and white, faux-scratches included short film of the band dressed as ninjas, fake moustaches included, and laying waste to a samurai, with silent film title cards thrown in.) However, as glorious as all this is, the highlight is definately the "Video Killed.." music video, which features the band members dancing about in red pajamas, nude stand-ins for the band rocking out, with IMacs for heads, random streams of information flying by, and plenty of psychadelic effects. It is a thing of perfect beauty. If at all possible, check it out.
