"Freedom Phalanx"

I won't re-cross-post my review from the CoH/CoV forums, but in light of all the bad we've been dealing with in comic books, I wanted to point out and highly recommend the Freedom Phalanx novel by Robin D. Laws. It's got it's moments of angst, sadness, and some self-pitying heroes, but in the end Robin's version of the Freedom Phalanx pretty much blows away those mooks who've been calling themselves the Justice League these days.

Great book. Great heroes. Just great!

So, not very true to the source material, then.

I prefer to think of the comic as being targeted to the comic reader, re: soul sucking angst zombie, demographic. Where as the novels are aimed at humans.

Pick your canon.

Read it. Honestly, the novel's version of things makes for a group of superheroes, as opposed to pansies in spandex. Then again, having one author doing your entire novel as opposed to a new set of people doing your comics every few issues probably helps there.
