Is irc.eyrie-productions.com still the IRC server of choice for EPU fans? Before yesterday, it had been a while since I checked in with #eyrie, and while there are a few people in there (who I believe qualify as "The Usual Suspects"), but it's pretty quiet.

Is there another place where EPU fans hang out these days?

There was a steep dieoff in traffic on the fan channel some years ago, after we fixed the infobot so that certain jackass users couldn't use it to spy on the studio channel any more. We may also have spoken sternly to those responsible. I vaguely remember the incident prompting a round of This Is Why You Don't Have Traffic, You're All Such Nazis over here on the boards, as well...

   Ah, IRC.

That's an experiment that sometimes fails in fascinating ways, such as the guy who kept macking on Gryph, the jackass shit with the infobot, the guy who spontaneously explained to the lot of us that he was (no shit) a P6 telepath (for reals, yo), probably at least one visit from my personal fanboy stalker, and then some stuff with my divorce.

You can understand why we're kind of... really, the only thing we didn't get in there was anything resembling interesting people to talk to.

Well, ISTR there were a few fun conversations, but by and large they didn't outweigh the facepalm moments, which is why we stopped coming by. Now, why it didn't take off as a fans-with-fans venue, I dunno. Maybe there just aren't that many of you. :)

Likewise. I burned through my excitement with party-line-text-messaging on Compuserve in the late 1980s, although I do poke my head in on a couple of fanfic-related servers once every couple of blue moons or so.

If you don't mind my asking, what "fanfic-related servers" are those? I've been trying to find a fanfic-ish channel to jump start my own mojo (one reason I dropped into #eyrie), but if those others are public, I'd be keen to visit them. If not, if you can't say, I understand. Thanks!

irc.nabiki.com, port 6667 is the one I've frequented most in recent years.

There's a weekly fic authors' meeting in #fanfic on Sunday nights at 9 PM, in fact.

   I managed to burn several bridges several years ago (remember NIVLAC?) and by the time I outgrew my own issues, I sort of fell out of the irc habit.

Last time I went on IRC was a year or two ago, and I couldn't keep up with the conversations anymore. Kids today type too fast. :)

   OK, so you guys have been coming back to IRC for all of, what, one day now?

I didn't think I'd have to make this clear, but apparently I do:

The server MOTD asks that you go to #eyrie. It does not invite you to randomly /join other channels-- there are folks on the server who have nothing to do with EPU, there are other channels that are simply not for you guys, and you need to respect that.

Not respecting that will earn you a /kick from other channels, and may earn you a /ban if you are persistent about it. There is no arguing your way back from a /kick-- if you show up where you are explicitly not invited, and then immediately complain that you want to go back there after you've been shown the door, we won't be very pleased.

I really, really shouldn't have had to explain this. I, personally, don't really favor having any of you on IRC, but if you're going to show up anyhow, at least behave like a reasonable person.

   I did IRC back in the day, but had a falling out with it as I hated what they were turning it into. I prefer posting on forums or instant messaging now.

Voice chat over Skype or ventrillo is also an acceptable form of communication.
(or in a game, as I am usually found playing Left 4 Dead, CoD5, or City of Heroes now.)
