"Music that reminds me of SotS"
|
Driving home to my folks' place for New Year's always lets me catch up on a few old CDs...This year's drive brought back a few songs which always seemed to go well with early Symphony stories: "Accident Prone" by Jawbreaker - when we first meet the Utena cast in their early "damaged goods" state, this is the song that always popped into my head (bear in mind, that outside of some screenshots, trailers, and reviews I have zero familiarity with RGU other than I can attach the right names to most of the main characters) "Jet Black" also by Jawbreaker - I think it's a good fit for the Black Rose duellists, titular pun aside. The creepy spoken word bit at the end seals it (not sure what movie it's from) "Rooftops" - a bit more uplifting, this is a Hot Water Music song but the version I'm thinking of is by Alkaline Trio. Reminds me of Bancroft Tower... Yes, these are in the indie/punk vein and Symphony is more arena rock, but there you go. I don't know if any of the bands that Gryphon and co. have introed in the series fit the "sullen hipster/punk" model at all though. Oh, and Happy New Year! "A good plan executed now is better than a perfect plan next week" - Gen George S. Patton, Jr. |

I did quite a bit of driving and listening to old tapes myself the past few weeks, and here's a song that always makes me think of Utena and Anthy during the original series ... or Corwin and Utena during SOS1/2 ... you could even make a case for Anthy and Corwin later.
Don't know what I see there's something in your eyes We're coming 'round again just like before Caught in this whirlpool our hands never touching Outside the circle I know that there's moreSitting here my eyes are wide, looking at you I see you talking but it's not your voice at all I try to tell you, what else can I do? Holding out for you Lying here watching you, lost in your dream I've seen you dancing, the image never falls I know you're in there, trying to break through Holding out for you I watch you circling my heart Try to draw you in we're still so far apart How can I touch you when you're circling my heart Standing here holding you but nothing seems real Our bodies touching, but there's something in between I need to feel you, your warmth coming through Holding out for you I watch you circling my heart Try to draw you in we're still so far apart How can I touch you when you're circling my heart Don't know what I see We're coming 'round again just like before Don't know what I see there's something in your eyes We're coming 'round again just like before Caught in this whirlpool our hands never touching Outside the circle I know that there's more You're circling my heart Try to draw you in we're still so far apart How can I touch you when you're circling my heart Circling my heart You're circling my heart You're circling my heart I watch you circling my heart
-- Brother, "Circling My Heart" Exit from Screechville Brother are my personal pick for Greatest Band You've Never Heard Of. They have a whole bunch of sample tracks on their site (click on "music").

I guess I should have included the lyrics to make the connection more obvious... What's the furthest place from here? It hasn't been my day for a couple years. What's a couple more? And if I go, don't forget the one good thing I almost did. I learned your name without words. I used my eyes, not my hands. What's the closest you can come to an almost total wreck and still walk away, All limbs intact? And when I go, you'll be there crying out, begging me. I won't hear. I'll just go fast into this night on broken legs. A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital. I scratch my accidents into the wall. I couldn't wait to breathe your breath. I cut in line, I bled to death. I got to you, there was nothing left. What's the meanest you can be to the one you claim to love And still smile to your your new found friends? In the same confusing breath, You pull away and draw me in. I wanted you. You wanted more. I built this life and now it's mine. A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital. I scratch my accidents into the wall. I couldn't wait to breathe your breath. I cut in line, I bled to death. I got to you, there was nothing left. (instrumental break, large guitar swells, multiple overdubs) A near miss or a close call? I keep a room at the hospital. I scratch my accidents into the wall. I couldn't wait to breathe your breath. I cut in line, I bled to death. I got to you, there was nothing left. Jawbreaker: "Accident Prone" Album : "Dear You" (1995) |

>I'd have to say that the music that reminds me of SotS the most is the >entire album Hoobastank - Hoobastank. I listened to the album on >repeat reading the first symphony, and it works as a rather spookily >accurate background track for the whole thing.... :D Is that that the one with the whole "I'm not a perfect person" song? Anyway, more lyrics - Rooftops (mentioned earlier) originally by Hot Water Music ( on No Division, released 1999), but here as performed by Alkaline Trio on their split w/HWM released in 2002 I've got the scars to remind me. I've watched the clocks go around. I've walked myself through some days, that have put me where I am. In another time, in another place, all things might have been in place. But for now I'm finding myself, right here standing on a rooftop screaming. "Hey world are you listening... listening to me?" I'm here and I'm hurting to begin again. It's another time, it's another place, and we are making more old days. But for now I'm finding myself, out here standing on a doorstep screaming. "Hey world are you listening... listening to me?" I'm here and I'm hurting to begin again. "Hey world I'm ready to listen (random yelling) and learn something new." I'm here and I'm willing to get myself through. For some reason, makes me think of Bancroft Tower...
