"(S47) Interlude on Titan (For Tomorrow)"

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-10 AT 01:56 PM (EDT)

30 Big Country's "Ships", originally on 1993's The Buffalo Skinners; Kate sometimes plays a version with lone piano accompaniment, similar to the one on The Greatest Hits of Big Country and the Skids.

Look at you now
Just chasing your life
Make like the saviour of the planet
You're just trying to get by
Now you may walk the line
And you may see it all through
I know you cry yourself to sleep at night
Just wond'ring what to do
And where were you when my ship went down?
Where were you when I ran aground?
Where were you when I turned it around?
Where were you when they burned me down?

Exactly why Juri finds it so affecting is not really understood; it might just be Kaitlyn's delivery.

I'm not entirely sure myself, and I'm the Resident Juriologist here. If I was to venture a guess, I'd say it possibly taps into some of Juri's remaining regrets about her life so far, about things not said when she could have in the past. PJM

76 I rather wondered that myself as I was writing this scene. Uh, guys? The hell are you do - oh. Um.

155 If anybody had put this situation to him as a hypothetical problem or thought experiment, and if he had played along at all, Corwin would've concluded that the most likely candidate would be Miki Kaoru.

182 In the event, the part of the dance floor scene with this line ended up getting cut from Ceremony & Celebration, something I didn't entirely realized I'd done until I went to look for it after For Tomorrow came out.

193 It may surprise you to learn that the core of this story were written long before they appeared - some parts before the First Symphony was entirely finished. The basic concept and key scenes date back far enough in the creative process that, in the original version of this line, Corwin says that Hikaru, not Kozue, would have to be consulted. I had no idea when I wrote it where in the timeline it would go, other than "at some point in the future," nor what story it would appear in or even if that story would be part of a Symphony or something else in the UF continuum. It just barged into my head and I had to write it down so it would leave me alone, and then it sat around for a long while waiting for events to catch up to it.

All of which makes it rather darkly funny when people assume it, and what it entails, was some kind of spur-of-the-moment decision. As a matter of fact, I knew from not very long after Corwin and Anthy first "met", during early development on Knights of the Tenth World, that they would one day have a child together. At the time, though, I thought the context would be a situation more similar to that of Corwin's own parents.

263 The original version of this scene, of which little remains, took place in an unspecified dojo, probably that of the Shidou School.

302 Chandler's Point is named for 20th-century detective novelist Raymond Chandler.

318 This, too, is meant to hearken back to the circumstances of Corwin's own birth. Skuld knew that her decision to pursue the course of action that resulted in Corwin was right after a prophetic dream she had after the fact - a dream in which she saw her future son, brave and true, risk everything for love. Corwin's dream was similar in theme.

391 From their appearance here and in For Today, some have concluded that the Rune Knights have a peculiar, perhaps even unhealthy interest in Corwin's love life. I prefer to think that they're just doing their best to help a comrade-in-arms who they personally witnessed performing the most heroic single action they've ever seen, and who they think the universe generally owes something.

Besides, it's not like they hung around for the consummation and afterwards. That would have been unhealthy. PJM

399 Hotohori University actually has nothing to do with Fushigi Yûgi. I grabbed the word at random from my mental list of Japaneseish Names.

496 Captain Joe is an original character; he's named for Joel Hodgson, who played Joel Robinson on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

612 This image had more significance when Hikaru was going to be Corwin's girl, but I still like it a lot.

716 Whether Corwin is actually having some kind of mental conversation with Saturn, or the whole thing is a sort of metaphoric internal monologue, is left as an exercise for the reader.

731 Echoing something he said in Interlude at Bancroft Tower, Corwin shows that, whatever may have happened in the years since, he's still Corwin.

790 And most likely an unconscious echo of his dream.

816 Though I can't imagine why he doesn't think he'll have an immediate use for this intelligence; no doubt this is an artifact of the original draft, in which - as per the original pre-Symphony design - he and Hikaru were waiting until she reached Salusian majority, which will be sometime around 2416. The only reason Kozue's waited as long as she has is because she was reluctant to be his first lover, for reasons she probably couldn't name if asked. Now that that's done, she's not going to feel any need to be bashful about it.

Well, it's not like he's anticipating Kozue to kick out the stops once he returns and gets back settled into life. This is Corwin we're talking about, after all. PJM

830 Mostly Master Blaster.

844 Actually? Yeah, probably.

966 Good Lord Almighty, do I have to draw you people a diagram?

Heheheh. At this point in the symphony I was thinking, One day soon that girl is just going to snap - and next thing you know, Utena will come to, tied spread-eagle to her bed with a hand-cuffed and gagged Corwin, wearing nothing but a cock-ring, while Anthy in a black leather domme outfit looms over them, impatiently snaps her riding crop and says, "Now get to work..."

You know, there's a good evolutionary reason why thoughts are inaudible to others.

I've been re-reading the Symphony, and when I got to the point in Another Christmas Rose where he introduces Saturn to Utena, I was reminded of this bit, and take it as evidence towards some sort of actual mental conversation.
