"Cybertron Reloaded #1"

LAST EDITED ON Mar-12-11 AT 01:24 AM (EST)

4 Much of the dialogue in this scene comes straight from The Transformers: The Movie.

81 The main difference being that Megatron doesn't knuckle under like a bitch here.

101 Coincidentally, the second year of the original Transformers franchise, which saw such landmarks as the second season of the cartoon show, much of the production work on the movie, and the introduction of the now-famous rubsign decals. A golden age for twelve-year-old Transformers fans.

118 Yes, it took us a while to get around to seriously start plotting and revising the renewed version of Cybertron Dreams, but when the year 2005 rolled around, it was practically a moral imperative to get the first new issue out before the end of the year, just so we could use "It Is the Year Two Thousand Five" on the teaser posters. More on why it took so long to get around to creating the revision at the end of the annotations. PJM

122 ACROSS's Overlord-class dropship is named after Raymond Chandler's archetypal hard-boiled detective, Philip Marlowe, because it's shaped like an egg.

164 Interestingly, at no point in this sequence is ACROSS's acronym expanded. Perhaps by this point in history it no longer stands for Avalon County Robot Offensive Support Service.

180 Chuck Keith comes to us from Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, the beleaguered best friend of the series' lead, Kou Uraki (both test pilots). Say what you will about the personalities involved, but I always liked the series in general (being one of my first extended exposures to Anime at the local college club), and I always wanted to give Chuck a chance at a more active starring role.

206 Best laid plans, Priss... Best laid plans. You should know better than that by now. PJM

218 That scene in Star Trek: First Contact freaked me right the hell out when I saw it umpty feet high in a theater.

333 The "front cover" for issue one had Priss looking out over Cybertron while in orbit, not her looking out into metaspace, but the intent is the same. It was especially designed to have the two images next to each other to have a single planet represented. It also allowed me to work on what a slightly-restored Cybertron would look like.

394 Illustrating the "back cover" for the nominal comic issue was a challenge, but one that allowed me to stretch my art muscles a little. It's hard to draw giant robots clasping their hands (or weapons) behind their backs.

459 One of the major additions in the revised story -- Metaspace gates! Of course Cybertron would have one.

486 The Undocumented Features answer to City of Heroes. Steeljaw plays a Natural Claws Scrapper as his primary, with a Magical Fire Blaster alt on a different server, and a Forcefield/Psi Defender on another. (What else do you think he does with his time when he's in Blaster's chest?) PJM

552 Or "cybersynchronous orbit", I suppose, since "geo" means "earth".

569 The Nemesis II is not a sister ship of the original Nemesis, Megatron's lost flagship (the wreck of which is still on Earth somewhere); it's based on the combined vehicle mode of the three-part Transformers Armada Decepticon called Tidal Wave.

592 Personal opinions on the G2 character of Windrazor may be mixed, but I always liked his team of "Skyscorchers" jet designs. What little existed in the fiction of their personalities I had fun expanding on.

597 The Decepticon Cyberjets (Hooligan, Skyjack, and Space Case), on the other hand, I wasn't nearly as fond of (I kept losing their missiles), and therefore they got the opportunity to be the first up against the wall when the revolution came. PJM

844 MC Hammer, 1990.

922 L'Expérience Sonique; École Musico-Technologique, Nice, 2404.

948 This helps answer how the jet-mode transformers (at least the ones based on modern fighters) actually manage to SEE anything. PJM

1067 Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment - just the thing when you don't want a critical hit to your ammo bin to take out your whole 'Mech. Or dropship.

1153 The first of many The Matrix references to be made. With a title like Cybertron Reloaded, how could we not?

1184 This should actually be "The Tagan Heights". I typoed this because it was spelled as such in Transformers: The Ultimate Guide. It is in no way meant to be a reference to Kaff Tagon in Schlock Mercenary, the existence of which I was not even aware of at the time of the issue's writing.

1214 This scene is meant to be very reminiscent of the Autobot shuttle crash on the Planet of Junk in The Transformers: The Movie. PJM

1242 Or the Maw. That would've been bad.

1260 Still not sure how they managed to get the license for Carmen's likeness for that game. Quite possibly Carmen Sandiego stole it back afterwards.

1407 There are many factors why it took so long to get around to scrapping Cybertron Dreams and replacing it with Cybertron Reloaded. The primary one being that the UF history for the Future Imperfect era had changed so radically since 1993 (the year CD was released), that it seemed almost impossible to revise it to meet up with the new UF sensibilities and personality developments for its leads, Priss Morgan and Sylvie Daniels. Nevermind the multitude of new reference sources available since then. Desultory talk of creating a new version was at about the same priority as revising A Day of Infamy, which was not that high. However, as 2005 rolled around, I was at a friend's house at a party, borrowing his copies of Transformers, the original series, and he was commenting about his own hopes for an eventual CD update, given the year. With that in mind, I started working off and on figuring out what was strictly necessary from the original story, and all the rest with the potential to be scrapped. That, plus a binge watching of the first two seasons of Transformers, and multiple late night writing sessions, finally started to get the gears in motion once again -- in time for the end of December 2005 to roll around and Cybertron Reloaded Issue 1 to finally hit the shelves. PJM

I rather suspect that by the 25th century, "geosynchronous" will be genericized as the English term for any similarly-timed orbit. Either that, or the "geo-" will be dropped and ships will simply use "synchronous orbit." Given the number of objects in the universe one could synchronize oneself with, contriving a unique prefix for every case would be a daunting task indeed. :)

Some Star Trek fans have suggested that the "standard orbit" from that universe is a (geo-)synchronous orbit. However, others point out that it's most likely a powered orbit, where the ship is closer than synchronous orbit and is using its engines to hover over a given spot while moving slower than normal orbital velocity. A powered orbit would explain why starships always seem to find themselves in a "decaying orbit" when their drives fail.

Probably. Also in words like "apogee" and "perigee" - though I admit to a sentimental fondness for the solar equivalents, "aphelion" and "perihelion" - and expressions like "down-to-earth". We also see this tendency in phrases like "under a yellow sun" or "the moons of Mars". There's only one Sun and one Moon, after all.

No it wasn't, it was labeled wrong. :)

Is it still set in a fictional Paragon City, or in New Avalon like most other Experts-related entertainment?

Nope, it's actually set in Acme City, a bastion of truth and justice on some Coreward Frontier world, as the original game, Hammer Time! was written and presented by Flying Yak during the Exile. That's not to say that a thinly-veiled version of New Avalon didn't appear in one of Hammer Time Online's many expansions, but the first release of the game still took place in Acme.
