"(S60) S5E2 Out of the Blue"

-9 The title of this piece was chosen because it refers to the evolution of the story in a couple of ways. Much of the text was originally developed for Clarion Call, but it didn't really fit with the story of the wedding attempt itself. The idea of making it a separate entr'acte sort of arrived, well, out of the blue. Which tied in well with the fact that much of the story involves people appearing unexpectedly - in one case literally out of the blue.

47 Yes, that's the same hat - Corwin's from A Rose for the New Year.

323 The Eta-2 Actis interceptor, the prototype of which would later turn up at the Muroc III trade show in Rogue Squadron.

546 Kard is an evolution of a character I originally invented for a story set in the Star Wars universe in about, um... 1985? Which I suppose makes him, in a very oblique way, the oldest original character in the UF universe - older even than Don Griffin.

842 Fans of the original Dragonlance Chronicles may recognize the words Tsuwabuki uses to dim and brighten the room as those used by Raistlin Majere to turn off and on the light on his mage's staff.

861 Like their counterparts in many FRPGs, svartelves can see into the infrared, making heat sources (like Tsuwabuki's blush) show up plainly in darkness.

863 A common fantasy convention - and not just fantasy, either, since I seem to recall that various sci-fi people, e.g. Tamaranians in the original New Teen Titans comics - can also do this.

928 Ana's name is derived from that of Anaximander of Miletus, an ancient Greek philosopher and student of Thales. Anaximander is credited with being the first person to propose a purely mechanical cosmology - a precursor of the Ptolemaic worldsystem under which Cephiro actually operates.

1038 We see Corwin's prediction come true in Code Name: Ultra.

1141 Leyna first appeared in Raven: Blood Ties, and acquires a last name here.

1174 It does not say Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.

1327 Alfheim's vættir, unlike the hobbits of myth, do wear shoes. Besides, in this setting it'd be rude not to.

1468 In the Shire, "fool of a Took" has something of an air of compliment about it. Peri comes from a very long line of iconoclasts and daredevils.

1546 A variation on the real CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics that some scientists would be pleased to get hold of, I suspect, particularly in the materials sciences.

1593 Not to be confused with So You Are Falling from a Great Height, which is intended to be consulted by people who are currently experiencing skydiving accidents and similar misfortunes.

1641 This remains one of my favorite exchanges in the Symphony. I'm fond of the whole conversation, but especially these two lines.

1649 Professor Kraalgh wasn't actually supposed to be here for this scene, as he returned to the Klingon Empire the previous summer, but he's come back at great personal risk in order to consult with persons at B6 regarding the progress of the Klingon Civil War, which is well underway by this time - and while he's in town, what the hell. Meanwhile, the Society's current faculty advisor, Professor May, has left a couple of days early to spend his spring recess shooting new eps of Top Gear, the first of which - in progress on this very day - would later appear as Road Film (With Fighting).
