"I broke it! And I has the dumb!"

Yesterday, I managed some interesting bits of failure
in several ways.

So, friend of mine who is an enthusiastic shooter, both
competition-wise and hunting-wise, calls me up and says,
"I got that new Glock 45 I ordered! Wanna come along and
test it out?" And, well, yes. Yes I did! So, yesterday,
he picked me up and we went out to the range just outside
of town. He pulled it out, we duly oooh'ed and aaah'ed,
and then set about trying it out. He'd brought a mixed
bag(literally) of rounds, we loaded one mag each and
proceeded to pew.

And when I got my turn, I had about 3-4 shots, and then
it failed to eject. Good start, right? So, mag out, rack
the slide several times, case comes out, good to go.

However, on my second go, I had about the same number of
shots, and the same thing happened again. Again, just
remove mag, rack vigorously, done. But, a bit annoying.

The fun times started at my third go-around. Loaded up
10 rounds in the magazine, pew. And I got 3 rounds off...
and the gun froze completely solid. Slide moved back,
came forward...and stopped about half an inch from fully
forward, and would not do anything. Couldn't pull back,
would not seat forward with pressure or light smack. It
moved a couple of millimeters back and forth, but that
was it.

Ok, magazine out again, try more emphasis. No. No deal.
So, check the magazine. Six unfired rounds, I fired three,
I loaded with 10....there's one unaccounted for. Careful
look at the side. Yup, sure enough, there's brass in there.
So, that's a live round in the chamber. OH what fun!
Raptures of delight all around!

So, carefully NOT pointing at anything too important, more
force was attempted. Nothing doing. Ok, more force in the
OTHER direction? Nope. The hell? Check internet for clues.
No, nothing really fitting. Was a few comments about G19s,
and the 45 is essentially a 19-slide on a 17-body, but
not really anything that seemed to fit.

Finally, a bit of a rush of brains to the head. Neither of
us really savored the idea of leaving the place with a gun
that had a live round and a technical malfunction that COULD,
even if unlikely, decide to go off in the car. So... we
finally struck on the idea to carefully remove the back plate
and try to access it from that end, as it were. So, with a
bit of fiddling, we managed to get the back strap off the
grip, then got the back plate, which let us pull the firing
and gubbins out. Ok, at least it's safe now. And then, for
some reason, I racked it...and it moved. So, I did it again,
more gubbins came out through the open magazine-well, and
then entire slide moved back, letting us look...and the
round was firmly stuck in the barrel. Friend managed to
get a flat screwdriver behind the rim of the round, and
leveraged it out.

So, that was my day of being convinced I managed to break
my friends brand new Glock from ordinary use, which
supposedly isn't possible.
Not the sort of impossible I wanted to prove wrong, as it
were. I mean, I'm quite sure that HAD it been broken, he
wouldn't have blamed me, but at the same time...

After he got it home, and reassembled everything, he
checked the culprit round, and not only found very
significant gouging in the bullet, but also the reason
for the failure. Turns out the case was quite a bit
bigger than the specifications. According to Wikipedia,
the specifications for the 9x19mm Parabellum say
"Base diameter 9.93 mm (0.391 in)" and his was nearer
to 10mm even. Which led to the case not fitting into
the barrel, jamming the works quite thoroughly.
This also is something that makes me very confused
because it's not like the metal would expand due to
moisture or something. Only explanation we could think
of were either massive manufacturer error, or a "Monday
morning" error of some sort.

As for the dumb...well, at one point during the process of
yanking, slapping, pressing and scratching of head(s), I
suddenly came to the realisation that I was pointing a
loaded, malfunctioning gun at myself. At which point, my
hand VERY carefully shifted it elsewhere. Sure, no finger
on trigger, not ENTIRELY filled with nothing but plaster
between the ears, but all the same, I can't actually
believe I did something so boneheaded.
