Dan Hudson's ability to generate concussive blasts of energy manifested when he was in high school. A lifelong fan of super-heroes, especially Paragon City's legendary Positron, Dan knew his mutant power was his ticket to the big time, but he also knew he would have to be careful. In small-town Maine, where he lived, mutant heroes weren't fully trusted.
Dan kept the lid on for a couple of years, but by his junior year at Nollesemic High, he couldn't stand waiting any more. An answer to the "mutant problem" came to him out of the blue one day. A natural tinkerer, Dan devised a high-tech-looking armored breastplate dubbed the "Battle Harness", the idea being that people would assume his powers were technologically derived. Add some armored boots and an improvised mask, tuck a few handy web grenades (another invention, and useful for making foes keep their distance) into a compartmented belt, and voilà - Dan was ready to hit hit the streets as his region's only hero. Taking his cue from his hero in Paragon City, he called himself Captain Positron.
The original Captain Positron look
Since Nollesemic was a small town, concealing his true identity was both important and more difficult than it would have been in a big city. Dan did the best he could with a pair of flash-compensation goggles (which helped keep him from being blinded by the glare of his own powers) and an army-surplus gas mask (which he discovered to his chagrin was not particularly effective against modern stun gas).
When he arrived in Paragon City, he found that his mask was less necessary - there he was one hero among hundreds, and there wasn't anyone else from his old hometown around. He dispensed with the useless gas mask and figured out a way to get the lenses of his goggles to match the rest of his costume.
Not long after, he was informed by the Paragon City officials that his name was too similar to Positron's and would have to be changed, lest people mistake him for the Freedom Phalanx member. Positron himself suggested the young hero's new name, which made the change easier to take, and thus Captain Photon was born!

Hangin' with Positron
A few months into his career, despite some impressive achievements and marked growth in his power and skill, Captain Photon became discouraged with life in Paragon. Feeling he hadn't found a niche and was just one face among many, he considered packing it in and returning to Nollesemic. A few incidents combined to change his mind, not least of which was his meeting, and subsequent partnership, with the sorcerous heroine called Twilight Torch.
Captain Photon and Twilight Torch
After working with Torch for some time, and achieving great gains in power, skill, and confidence, Captain Photon decided it was time to put aside the technological masquerade that had marked his early career. It was time to come out of the closet, so to speak, and take no shame in admitting that his powers came from within. With that in mind, he went to Serge, the head tailor at the Steel Canyon branch of Icon, and developed a new costume that boldly announced its wearer's lack of dependence on technology.
Captain Photon, Version 2.2
On a recent visit to Salamanca, Captain Photon had the chance to meet one of his idols, the late heroine War Witch, whose spirit now guards that troubled village.
