"assorted remasters"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-24 AT 11:56 PM (EDT)

Just for the heck of it, I decided to give Manhunt the HTML remaster treatment as well. I'll probably look at converting Star-Crossed next; the two series are kind of complementary, and represent a couple of the last long pieces that were written before Weapon of Choice and the CSS debut.

It's funny. In my head, I still think of Manhunt as a fairly new story, so the fact that it's nearly old enough to vote messes with the aforementioned head a little.

Still holds up pretty well, though! If I do say it myself. There are a few awkward turns of phrase here and there, but I decided to stick strictly to remastering and not start trying to revise. That's a rabbit hole I just can't afford to go down...

I've spotted an error. In Saavik's flashback in part 6, this paragraph:

>The grey-coated man reversed his sword, swept the soldier's emerald blood from it with a
>long-practiced gesture, and sheathed it home in the scabbard across his back. Then he stepped
>over the corpse, knelt in front of the child, and asked gently,

abruptly ends there without Gryphon's question.

That's weird. I can't think of anything in the conversion process that would have caused that, but I must have messed something up. I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight.

Fixed. Turned out to be a small markup problem with the "translation" quotes; I missed that set, and the symbols I used in the ASCII version made HTML think the whole statement was an invalid tag.

Y'know, in the course of remastering Manhunt, I got to thinking and it occurred to me that, apart from the flashbacks therein and a couple of Minis, we've never really seen G just... being in Starfleet. There's this whole stretch of his life that's accounted for but never really depicted.

I don't really count Split Infinitive because, with the best will in the world, most of it is pretty bad. (And I contradicted big parts of it in later pieces because I, uh... sort of forgot how a bunch of it even went. Whoopsie-doodle.) It rather cries out for replacement, much like Manhunt replaced Secrets, but at the moment I don't really have any idea how I would go about that. It's just a vague thought that it might be a thing that should be done sometime.

(Before anyone else brings it up, I should acknowledge that it's not the biggest stretch of his career that's underserved, by far. The Golden Age is extremely barren compared to the rest of the Exile and virtually all Future Imperfect. We know more about what he's been up to since 2388 than we've ever seen about what he, or indeed anyone, did between 1992 and 2288. But anyway.)

This thought isn't really going anywhere right now, but between reskimming Manhunt while remastering it, and picking up on Strange New Worlds, it's got me thinking about that gap.

It's a mini, but The Final Simulation is probably my favorite of all of the Exile stories. I'd estimate I read or listen to it approximately three times a year.

You're not the only one, but it's also still one of my favorites between the CSI elements, Gryph and crew, and the general UF-ness of the whole thing. It's a fun ride.

I just wanted to say thank you again for what you did for me when you first released Manhunt. My grandmother passed away a couple days before you were scheduled to release the final part, and I sent you a message asking if I could get an advance copy to print out for the cross country plane ride for the funeral. Instead, you simply released part 6 a day early, giving me a much needed distraction. It's a good story that still holds up, but more than that for me is a reminder that you're a real mensch. Kinda like your counterpart on this story. Cheers!

You're welcome! Thanks for reminding me, in turn. Some days it's nice to be reminded that I'm doing more than just yelling down a well with this stuff. :)

In that case, I've been remiss in letting you and the Eyrie crew know that you're appreciated. I've been reading since umm, the late 90's and remember the Rabid Crack Weasel phase of the forums.

More than once, Eryie has been my go-to when I need something to read. It's also been my introduction to quite a few anime/manga, as I'll get interested in a character and want more of their backstory. The audiobooks that you did are still on my phone and have been constant companions when I have to make a long drive or a flight.

Always excited to see a new series come up, and always sad when the Muse jumps to another and leaves one hanging. I completely understand how it goes, as I've left a couple of my characters high and dry for too long as it is.

I hardly ever post, because usually by the time I find something to post about, others have already covered the comments/points I wanted to voice. However, this is one where I have to speak up to add my voice.

Thank you for the years of enjoyment and rereads that I've enjoyed. I don't think I'll ever print the entire story list out again, but it was a point of pride for me to say I had the entire Eyrie series on my book shelf.

Just noticed: On the Manhunt page, the links to go back to Core, GA, Exile, and FI are broken (they look to try and stay inside MH instead of going back up a couple levels).

Oh, yeah, that's a side effect of the fact that I made that subpage (and probably quite a few others) after the fact and have never really understood how some of the old coding works. The footers are called automatically from somewhere else, and I don't know how to change them.

I didn't set out with this specific goal in mind, but it's starting to look like these remasters are leading up to something you guys have been waiting on for a long time.now. Funny how this stuff works sometimes.

As an avid observer of the process, I can say that creativity is like that.
