"randomly admiring a historical figure"

I'm listening to Challenger, the new book by Midnight in Chernobyl author Adam Higginbotham, which is about the STS-51-L disaster. As these things often do, it opens with miniature biographies of many of the persons involved, and I have to say, Ron McNair sounds like he was an awesome dude. He played the saxophone (in space), had a Ph.D in laser physics (during his candidacy for which he once had to repeat three years' worth of research in three months because somebody stole the records), taught karate... the guy was basically the black Buckaroo Banzai.
