"random hardware rec"

If you find yourself needing a mouse and don't mind spending 100 bucks to get it, I can recommend the Logitech MX Master. It's the latest in their MX line of premium mice, of which I've had several of the previous models, and it compares very well to its immediate predecessor, the Performance Mouse MX (one of my favorites, and still in service on my Big Laptop now that I've got the MX Master on my desktop system). If anything, the shape is slightly more comfortable than that already-very-comfortable mouse, and the button that engages and disengages "speed mode" on the scroll wheel feels nicer. It's the little things.

Available wherever fine computer peripherals are sold. This is not a paid endorsement.

I held on to my MX Revolution (basically the Performance MX with an additional rocker button on the side) for a good many years. I contemplated getting the MX Master when I built my current rig earlier this year, but ended up going with the Logitech G502 Proteus Core instead due to its button layout.

I've still got my MX Revolution in a drawer someplace; it's no longer in service mainly because it has about an 11-second battery life now, and unlike the Performance, its battery isn't user-replaceable.

It's not that hard to open it up, and you can find OEM replacement batteries for it on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Original-OEM-Logitech-battery-replacement-for-Logitech-MX-Revolution-/251843742581?hash=item3aa30e8b75

Speaking of hardware, I got a pretty decent deal on a lightly used Saitek X-55 joystick-throttle combo... and then found out that they haven't got Windows 10 drivers for it yet. It still works with Elite Dangerous, but the configuration software doesn't work, so I can't turn the LEDs off... and of course the buttons and switches aren't labeled the same as they are in the E:D control config screen, so I can't tell if anything I'm trying to assign has been used for something else unless I set it and get the "well, that WAS 'retract landing gear' but whatever you say" error message.

(Which, while I'm grumbling, works backward from the way it should, or is it just me? "That's already bound to such-and-such" strikes me as a more helpful message than "you just unbound such-and-such". Or hey, it could even ask for confirmation! Radical, I know.)

Anyway. It was a good deal, but it was still fairly expensive for a toy, and I don't know if I actually like it yet. For that kind of outlay I was hoping that wouldn't be a decision that required a lot of thought.
