"DSM Orientation Materials 1"

LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-11 AT 11:38 PM (EDT)

Dr. Roland E. Tiefeld, president

July 10, 2409

Dear Incoming Student,

This envelope contains your official Welcome Kit for the 2409-2410 school year, as promised in the letter notifying you of your acceptance to the Institute. Again, congratulations and welcome to the most exciting school in the Federation!

In addition to your course catalog and student ID/login information for the Registrar's online class selection system, this kit contains many useful pieces of information, such as your copies of the Residence Life manual, the Student Conduct Code, and - perhaps most important of all - the campus map! I encourage you to study these documents carefully so that you will know your way around and what you need to do when you arrive for New Student Orientation next month.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with my office or that of our Dean of Student Life, Dr. Claudia Montaigne, at any time. I look forward to meeting you at Orientation.

Yours sincerely,

Roland E. Tiefeld
President, Deedlit Satori Mandeville Memorial Institute

EXTRACAMPUS FACILITIES (not shown on the Campus Map)

Frank Crowe Memorial Dam - This hydroelectric generating station is located on the Jeradar River, approximately 30 miles downstream of Lake Jeradar. In addition to serving as an educational facility for the Institute's civil and electrical engineering students, Crowe Dam provides 25% of the electrical power used by the main campus.

Neil F. Comins Observatory - Replacing the original Comins Observatory (which was renamed the Maynard F. Jordan Observatory, but is still popularly called "MiniCom" by the student body), this astronomical observatory is located at the top of Mount Davenport, roughly 20 miles northeast of campus in the Great Forlein Mountains, to escape light pollution from the school and Port Jeradar.

Botrell Beach Oceanographic Station - A research facility for the Institute's budding oceanographers and marine biologists, located near the popular summer destination on the shore of the Great Eastern Sea. BBOS is home base for DSM's research minisubmarine, the Ballard.

J.E. Fleming Agricultural Research Station - Also known as the school farm, this facility is not technically outside the Institute's grounds, but is large enough and sufficiently distant from the central campus that it does not appear on the main Campus Map.

Paul Szlyk Club of America Club Lakeside Culinary Operations Center - Located on the shore of Lake Jeradar just to the west of campus, this complex of outdoor barbecue pits and picnic facilities is almost as popular a weekend destination in the warmer months as Botrell Beach!

I can't follow the link to what I assue is the actual map (my problem, not yours), but from the key - is the Castle not on the map? Hope so - IIRC it's an approved residence facility.

Also, as Derek Bacon is alive in this universe, why is there a Memorial Library named in honor of him?

The Castle is on the map, as seen in the southwest corner. Nice and big with its own text label, along with Castle Hill.

Because the Irkens paid for it, in memory of the glory of Bacon and his tallness.

>Because the Irkens paid for it, in memory of the glory of Bacon and

At least, that's one of the explanations students receive when they ask. It's also been theorized that it's a Garibaldi prank.

(The joke, if there is one, is that none of the other buildings on campus that actually are named the way they are as memorials - W. Shawn Walsh Arena, for instance - are actually called "Memorial" whatever. Not even Mandeville Hall; the school itself is called the Deedlit Satori Mandeville Memorial Institute, but the building is officially just DSM Hall.)

It's kind of a combination residence facility and clubhouse for a campus club, and is indeed an Official Campus Building; the reason it isn't listed in the key is because (you can't see it, but) it's not numbered on the map, it's actually labeled, primarily because of its unique status.

Very cool. I'm glad to finally see a layout of the campus and where everything is situated. I love how the President's house is just down the hill from the Castle; nice location. About how large is the visible campus, or has that been measured/determined?

Also, do the University students use the same facilities? I seem to recall there being a University branch of DSM, but I'm not sure if it's active by 2009.

We didn't want to be too specific about that, which is why the map doesn't have a scale on it, but if you figure the stadium is the usual sort of size for that kind of thing, the rest of it can be more or less guesstimated.

>Also, do the University students use the same facilities? I seem to
>recall there being a University branch of DSM, but I'm not sure if

The 2409-2410 school year is in fact the university division's inaugural year, and so far they do use the same facilities. Residence Group East is there primarily in anticipation of the increase in enrollment the administration anticipates once the U division gets rolling; though the space for it was allocated in the original construction, the buildings themselves weren't put up until the summer of 2409 (and so in the 2409-2410 school year they're still largely empty).

The thing about DSM's "university division" is that the place was practically a junior college anyway, more than it was an ordinary high school, so despite the name it isn't so much a separate school as they're expanding the regular curriculum to add grades 13, 14, 15, and 16. :)

That's what I figured, given the rather advanced level of both the curriculum and the facilities. It was, after all, custom built from the ground up to -be that awesome-. I had a feeling since they hadn't been mentioned prior that the Res Block East was there for that reason. And yea, using the stadium as a guide...Man Clarissa is -dedicated- to have walked that far to try and torch the birdcage. She came from Hamlin?

It's not that far. I mean, these are mostly teenagers or their planet's equivalent, after all. The hard part's the hill. ... and the five-gallon can of gasoline.

She is dedicated, though. One thing you have to give the Broadbank girls, wasn't none of them afraid of a little hard work.

True, perhaps not. I was mostly thinking in terms of the lateness of the hour, and what little we knew of the temperature (not too high). But I guess when you're on a mission, those kinds of things just blur anyway.

Um... I think you may be a little bit confused. The stadium Clarissa tried to commit arson on was the Avalon County Colosseum. She certainly did not try to walk there from Hamlin Hall... nor from her family's estates in New Avalon.

I think Droken is referring to when Clarissa tried to torch Anthy's greenhouse, aka "the birdcage."

Yay, I finally got to see the map!

Why is it not surprising that someone arranged for an observatory to be located just outside The Castle's back door? I'm assuming that Utena, given her apparent interest in "star gazing" or just plain astronomy, had a hand in that choice of location. (that, or maybe the Brothers already had something similar going on there?)

I, too, thought Hannibal Hamlin Hall would be closer to The Castle, but for different reasons. In Sophomore Slump Tom thinks about looking out the window to see if there's any activity at The Castle. Yeah, it's a 4th floor window, but there are several buildings (2 dorms and the entire performing arts complex) along with Single Acre Wood between the two locations.

How convenient the garage, er, auto and transport engineering building, is right next to the drag strip. They're into hands-on work and testing, I take it?

Nicely done, to all concerned :)

Actually, as far as I know, it was coincidental. That was the darkest spot on campus that was within easy access of the perimeter road. The other corners are either too close to Highway 1 or the athletic fields. (And even then it proved unsuitable for a bigger telescope, which is why they built another one out in the mountains later. Castle Hill protects the site from much of the glare from the campus lights, but it also blocks the northeastern sky, so six of one...) Utena's observatory was on the roof of the Castle. :)

>I, too, thought Hannibal Hamlin Hall would be closer to The Castle,

>Yeah, it's a 4th floor window, but there are several buildings (2

What you can't see on the map is that Castle Hill is fairly tall - tall enough that the Castle is above the trees of the Single-Acre Wood. It can be seen, at least part of it, from pretty much anywhere on the central campus. It's still quite far from Hamlin, and the auditorium doesn't exactly help, but Tom at least figured he'd be able to tell if there was anybody moving around up there.

>How convenient the garage, er, auto and transport engineering

The southern leg of the campus perimeter road wasn't intended as a drag strip (as far as anyone can verify), it became one more or less by default when the motorhead students noticed it was straight, flat, and a reasonable distance away from anything valuable one might crash into. Those runoff areas at the east and west ends were added later - and so, yeah, that corner of campus was the logical place to build the Stanley Shops (which also house the Motor Club's clubhouse). :)

Coincidence, entirely, as Utena's interest in Astronomy still had yet to be fully rekindled. Truly.

It's a Very Tall Hill.

Alternatively, I could just nudge the Castle over a few feet to the east if you really want better sightlines...

(flip side, if you're at the extreme east of Hamlin, you can see past most of the obstructions, "shooting the needle", as it were.)

>How convenient the garage, er, auto and transport engineering
>building, is right next to the drag strip. They're into hands-on work
>and testing, I take it?

Well, before the 2409-2410 school year, "The Drag Strip" was just the unofficial name for the southernmost perimeter road, seeing as it was straight for most of its length, and kids with cars with too much time on their hands on the weekends would unofficially (and technically illegally) used it for straightaway races since there was quite a bit of distance and nothing but grass on either side and either end. (besides, if there WAS an accident, there'd be a faster emergency response, as opposed to racing on die Autobahn.)

It was only with the construction of the Stanley Shops and the installation of the Top Gear hosts as professors that the use of the south road for that purpose was formalized and legalized. That may have taken some of the illicit "thrill" out of the racing, but most were happy for the exchange because they added skid-out straightaways past both ends of the road with crash protection features, automated traffic blockers for the north-heading parts of the road, and racetrack quality measuring and timing gear so that the speeds could be officially recorded.

No official word on wether or not another replica of the Top Gear track will be built on-campus or on a spur of die Autobahn, yet.

The usual half-eagle, half-lion mythic critter, like you find out in front of libraries, or at the top of this website. The one at DSM is more dynamically posed than the usual library kind, in a sort of Furious Sports Mascot swooping style.

This is as opposed to the one at the Wedge Defense Force Academy, the Golden Gryphon (Go Gryphons! Beat Navy!), which is wearing a WWI flying ace hat, smoking a cigar, and and clutches a Spandau machine gun in its foreclaws. (Don't ask me, UF-me didn't name it or design it. :)

It's fitting, I think, that we use Sir John's fictional version instead of the actual one, since the UF universe is all about cooler versions of stuff than we get in disappointing old reality. :)
