"CoH: Yes, More Torchy"

The Torch of Victory hit level 20 today, so I figured I'd celebrate by inflicting on yousharing with you some pics of her various costumes. It's sad when a grown man plays with dress-up dolls, but what the hell. I never claimed not to be sad.

Torchy's original costume. It has certain similarities to the one she wore as Gen. Rossum (most notably the jacket, rocket boots, and monocle), though she's wearing her hair differently. Unlike her villain incarnation, who felt a certain reckless abandon when it came to her personal safety, she's wearing body armor under the jacket. I may change her hair back to its original style to better interact with her newly acquired cape.

Here we see Torchy's "Mark II" battle harness, which is more heavily armored and dispenses with the skirt and tights in favor of some sturdy cargo pants. She's also adopted Captain Photon-esque battle goggles, perhaps to make it less obvious that she has an artificial eye. This is probably the outfit that will slowly accrue Vanguard pieces later in the game.

The experimental Mark III battle harness includes an avian analog flight system instead of the rocket boots, a different configuration for the shoulder-mounted cooling fins, and a slightly disconcerting lack of armor plating, but then, it is only a prototype. (As an aside, I love the way the tech wings, tech robot arms, and Stealth chest detail and belt all interact to form a nice "prototype flying combat harness" form.) This outfit (clearly intended mainly just for testing the Mark III's capabilities) also features a reprise of the original boots Gen. Rossum wore before acquiring her rocket boots.

I like that there are enough options and fiddly bits available now that I can really try and convey the fact that Jen's a tinkerer at heart, always futzing with her equipment. It makes this version of the character come alive in a way that the original hero model didn't. (Although that's not to say that Midnight Call might not succeed just fine if I were to turn away from the idea that she's a hero version of Jen and change, as it were, the face behind the mask.)

And yes, if you wish to grumble, you can take it that this is the reason you haven't gotten much new material here lately. I prefer to think of it the other way around - that this is what I do to keep things warm, as it were, while I'm lacking the mojo for other stuff - but I've certainly been accused of neglecting everything else for the game in the past, and it won't hurt me too much for it to happen again. :)

Given it got me back into City of Heroes, to the happy discovery of how much it's improved since my original trial, I'm not complaining :) Also, I love her badge title. So appropriate.

Since you admit to continuing interest in the game, could I ask for your thoughts on the Issue 12 preview? No real reason, just curious.

   >Since you admit to continuing interest in the game, could I ask for
>your thoughts on the Issue 12 preview? No real reason, just curious.

So far my reaction to what's been announced for issue 12 is a qualified "eh". I'll run down what's on the announcement page...

1) The Midnight Squad - potentially neat, but there's not a lot of information here. Will they be yet another faction that gives heroic players a disturbing sense of being up to no good (Hero Corps, Ouroboros, Vanguard)? Will they stick to their roots or, in order to be available to all characters, accept members with an Origin other than Magic? Is that capital L accidental or somebody trying to be cute?

2) Ancient Rome zone: Whaaaaa? I've seen a lot of different proposals for new zones, but I don't think I've ever seen anybody ask for anything like this. Also, oh look, yet more content reserved for 35+. 'Cause, you know, there aren't those of us with many more characters in the teens and twenties than we'll ever have at level 35 and above. Why should our selfish desire for any more varied content than the new Faultline and police scanner missions in Steel Canyon be indulged?

(NOTE: Some have said this is in fact not a zone, but themed mission maps; however, the hype says "zone maps". Admittedly, this is rather vague, but it does say "zone" in it, so I'm going with that assumption for now.)

3) Roman-style costume bits: Okay. Pretty cool. I'm dubious as to just how superheroic it is? But pretty cool. I reserve the right to mock without mercy anyone who chooses the helmet with the brush going athwartships, though. That's just goofy. (Also, check out that guy all the way to the right. You can tell the guy who designed him has played too much The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. He looks just like one of the Blades.)

4) Villian epic ATs: Not likely to be any kind of factor for me. The odds that I'll ever bother grinding a villain to level 50 are very small. Also, if they permit male characters to be Blood Widows or female characters to be Wolf Spiders (as the "here are the epic AT costume bits" pic implies), they have officially screwed their theme in the ear. Also also, missions for Wolf Spiders should entail just standing around punching one fist into the other hand in warehouses, Arachnos labs, etc. for an hour or so, with a percent chance that an NPC arch-hero or arch-villain will show up and kill you at some point during your shift. Unglamorous, but that's the life of a Wolf Spider. :)

5) Power set proliferation: Uh, okay. As with any power set addition, this will probably be a mixture of lame and cool in practice. All I can say is, if any Hero AT gets the Electric Melee/Electric Armor sets, they had better change them to the right color. Also, I need to be making more characters like I need a hole in the head. If they're going to do this kind of wholesale new availability, it's time to let players change existing characters' primary/secondary power set choices.

6) Hollows makeover: Uh, whatever. From the paragraph of hype, I gather they're trying to make it more like New Faultline (sort of halfway between an old-style hazard zone and a city zone in terms of street-level threat). Which is fine, but I still doubt I'll bother going in there much. The zone's just too damned big for characters without travel powers.

7) Fiddly bits:

a) Revamped power trays: Great for those who have been asking for them, but I dunno that I'll bother. I have rarely crashed hard into the limitations of the existing system.

b) Sorting of contacts: It's about friggin' time.

c) Inspiration conversion: Uh, sure, whatever. Unlikely to use.

d) Level-up boost: Potentially amusing.

e) Chat improvements: And yet, there still isn't going to be a confirmation dialogue to drop friends/global friends, is there, despite yet another right-click menu that presents an opportunity to do so by mistake? I don't see the overriding usefulness of anything mentioned here.

f) More Real Numbers: I was dismayed when they put the "real numbers" feature into the game in the first place. This does not ameliorate that dismay in any way.

Overall, there isn't much of anything here that I think is a particularly bad idea, but there's also not much that excites me, and a couple of the items tend to enhance my existing suspicion that the design team is in danger of losing sight of what kind of game they're making. I mean, an ancient Rome zone? What's superheroic about ancient Rome? Between that, the hugely overweighted emphasis on the Alien Invasion plot (complete with the Vanguard and its massively military overtones), and... well... pretty much everything in City of Villains, I'm rather concerned that the game is progressively ceasing to be a superhero game and becoming a sci-fi game where people happen to dress funny. A lot of the more recent additions just don't have a comic-book feel to me.

Huh. Gee, that was all rather pessimistic, wasn't it. Did I mention I'm really looking forward to the changes to the contact window?

Actually, there is one of the costume bits that I'm massively thrilled about.

See, the game's existing capes are all about trailing behind the player. There's no real way to indicate whether a character is wearing one of those trailing superman capes or a more encompassing and dignified (if the word isn't too badly inappropriate) cloak, like, say, Batman or Raven go in for.

Seems to me that the new big roman fabric shoulders thingie will give a way to do that, which is just squee, for me.

Well, to be fair, the initial Midnight Squad content is claimed to be in the tens and twenties.

Historical fact: the front-to-back brush was for legionaries (during parades and such only) or high-ranking political appointee officers such as tribunes (all the time). Side-to-side (worn all the time) marks a centurion... in other words, a sergeant.

Mocking a Sarge strikes me as not conducive to a pleasant day. ^.^

Odds are, it'll be about the initial Nictus invasion.

So picture this: the ghost of Abraham Lincoln time-traveling to Ancient Rome to FIGHT ALIEN ENERGY BEINGS POSSESSING THE SENATE! How comic booky is that? :) :)

...okay, it's a lot like those bizarre 50's Batman comics, but still. And Linc'll get some use out of the backup Vessel he acquired during the Valentine's Day festivities: a statue of Julius Caesar. ;)

No one asked for a second opinion, but what the hell, just as a counterpoint to Gryph I thought it'd be fun. (Also from the perspective of a relative noob, I was only able to pick up the game shortly before Issue 10 rolled out (woo hoo, kilt at the end of the month).)

-
The Midnight Squad / Ancient Rome zone

Very much looking forward to this, for a couple of reasons. The storyline sounds promising and some of the hints that they've dropped in about what it'll be centered around sound cool. When I first saw the screenshots of the new maps, I thought it was going to be an old west setup, so was mildly dissapointed when it turned out to not be the case. I'll live.

The other, backend reason I'm happy with this has to do with one of my issues with the game as it stands right now. They've added several things over the years that are great and have clear markers for when to run them. Level 15? Hit Faultline! 20? Finish Faultline, start Striga! 25? Finish Striga and start Croatoa! 30? Finish Croatoa! 35? ...uhhh, go to Founders and get sniped a lot, or start on the RWZ, which isn't going to be everyone's- or even every toon's- favorite choice (I ran the intro missions at 35 so I could start earning Merits, but I've been happier running around in there closer to 40 than 35). Whee. Between 10 and 15, and between 35 and 40 there's not a lot to do. There's a few decent NPC arcs to be run, there's scanners, and there's sweeping. The XP tweak has eased things a bit there, but the lack of anything that really feels like a seperate adventure is still noticable. So here we have, in one shot, something for level 10 and something for 35. So now I might have something like Faultline to look forward to within a few days of rolling a new alt? Fucking win.

-
Roman-style costume bits

New costume bits are always awesome. The character generator and Icon are easily the best things about the game. *Please* let it not be set up like the Vanguard Merit system. My hope is that you have to play through some part of the arc that involves a costumed infiltration, a la Agent G's Faultline arc, completion of which grants you the set. We'll see.

-
Villian epic ATs

My interest Red Side has been low so far. I've got a Bots MM that's fun, but which I don't play often, and a Dual Blades/Willpower Brute that vaulted to level 7 in an awfully short time after XP smoothing went live. If I'm ever to have a 50 in CoV, it'll probably be him. Terrifyingly destructive.

The VEAT concepts themselves are cool. I'm anxious to hear how the branching power paths will work. Want to be a Crab Spider? Cool, here's your backpack. That they're apparently opening up either side to any gender is amusing. The urge to roll a Huge bodytype Fortunata and call her 'Huge Marge' is overwhelming.

-
Power set proliferation

Psi blasters, dude. (That exploding sound you hear is the entire PVP community having a stroke.) Fuckin' a. Will be interested to see what Scrappers get. More options, just like more costumes, are always welcome.

They better be looking at opening more slots per server, though. Whether they meant to or not, they've built a game that caters to altitis. Old timers are going to be *screaming* for server space.

-
Hollows makeover

Oh hell yes. I wandered into the Hollows the first time on my main because some NPC told me I had to. Zoning in was like walking into WWI. You picked up your mission from Wincott, headed for the sandbags. When I was there, on Virtue, there were some flavor of high level FF and Kinetics toons handing out Speed Boost and bubbles as people wandered out of the safe zone. It was my first real experience of the MMO nature of the game. And it was the first time I got dead. A lot. I still like Wincott's arc, and I use it as a booster now to hit level 9 or 10. I watched someone else run Flux, and I never bothered doing it myself, as it didn't look like any fun. So the Faultline-ing of the Hollows? *Awesome,* if they do it right. I can run a new toon from Outbreak to level 5 in an hour or two (even easier now with the new XP). Midnight Squad at 10, and now a (hopefully) tolerable Hollows at 5? Congrats, NCSoft, you've now filled in almost all of the holes I've been skipping and doing my own thing on for months now. Very excited.

-
Revamped power trays

Feeling the three-tray pain on my main at 41. Sounds like they just said 'screw it, have almost all of them', which is fine by me. Being able to break them out and sort them however you want (even vertically instead of horizontally) is extra cool.

-
Sorting of contacts

Never really had a problem with it, but awesome all the same.

-
Inspiration conversion

No more 'anyone got a wakie?' Odds are good that, even if you don't have enough to make one, someone else will. Crafting a Break Free in a pinch might also be handy. Favorite quote on the CoH boards was, "Finally, we get our own Horadric Cube!"

-
Level-up boost

Snork.

-
Chat improvements

I'm *awful* at in-game chat. Anything that streamlines the UI is good.

-
More Real Numbers

They're nice to see just to check on how your slotting is working, and being able to see the numbers on powers before you pick them is a nice touch. I don't leave them running in-game, though, so not much more beyond 'gee whiz' impact here.

They've been telling us not to expect a lot from I12 becasue they're still staffing up after the break from Cryptic. If this isn't a lot, I13 ought to be *fascinating* indeed.

According to Positron, the VEAT were planned to launch in I13, but the sales of the Wedding Pack allowed them to shuffle the budget enough to bump them an issue earlier.

I've been enjoying it myself. The bulk of it's been a lot of eating crow. The one's that are being doomful are the ones who are *always* doomful, and are pretty easy to filter out. There's a little added Champions Online trolling, but, whatever. (I'm less than interested in CO atm, mainly because I don't have much faith in Jack making a game I actually want to play. The vast majority of the people who've been working on CoH all this time are *still* working on CoH. Either way it's Fall 2009 before they're even going to think about a beta, so.)

It seems the Hollows revamp is limited to door and spawn placement, and isn't actually a full on Faultline-style revamp. One would think, however, that this includes level-specific doors and not casting a level 6 out across the crater from the Atlas gate. It's a War Witch project, and she's been behind some of the better zone revamps, so still looking forward to it.

Indeed! That post made me laugh my ass off after all the noise about the pack. I mean, I thought it was a little overpriced too, really, but I'm a fat sucker for tails on a coat. Good to know my weakness paid for something else. :)

Huh... I did the Willows and Flux jobs in there and was rather disappointed, not from the missions themselves, but the sheer amount of freaking walking required at the time. Anything that makes the Hollows less an exercise in frustration is good by me.

That's my main reservation with any advertised revamp of the zone that focuses entirely on content - if it's still intended for the same level range, it still has the same core problem, which is that the zone is just too damn big to be any fun for characters who don't have travel powers. Seems like they may be making presumptions about characters having the gadgets from the first couple of safeguard missions, which is a mistake, IMO.

Now, they might have figured out a way to, as wedge speculates, restrict the assignment of mission doors to particular sub-areas of the zone, but that's never been done before to my knowledge, so you'd think they'd be making a particular point of it in the hype. Scanner missions, the very latest thing in door mission assignment, can still spawn anywhere, including in the depths of those freaking Arachnos tunnels in the new Faultline, where level-15 heroes are suddenly expected to find their way through a maze infested with level-22 Arachnos troops just to get to the door to a "retrieve the inobtanium alloy" mission.

But hey, if they have figured out a way to manage that, great - and even the presence of a hospital in the zone is an improvement. I got to the Hollows for a door mission once by way of the veteran-reward base recall device and an SG base teleporter, and was deeply nonplussed when I died and found myself respawning at the hospital in Brickstown. (Always thought, as I did, that it just sends you automatically to the nearest City Zone? Nope! It sends you to the last one you were in!)

(The fellow's name is Wincott, by the way. Not that I wouldn't be deeply amused to encounter Catherine Willows as a mission contact somewhere. :)

According to the developer diary War Witch posted, she has done that for every single mission in the zone. She's quite proud of the fact you no longer need to hit hover, fly up, hit autorun and go to make a coffee. :)

Great! Now she can fix the goddamned scanner doors in Faultline.

Here's why I'm not on the bandwagon:

"Champions Online delivers furious, fast-paced encounters previously reserved for action and fighting games. No more boring auto attacks and lengthy recharge times. Champions Online combat is instantaneous and electrifying!"

(from the Champions Online official website)

There's a reason twitch combat is "reserved for action and fighting games," fellas. Some of us play roleplaying games to play a role, not test our reflexes against those of 12-year-old Koreans high on Red Bull.

Yeah, there's that. I was underwhelmed by the screenshots, too. I've already played Crackdown, I don't need more cell-shading.

That's OK. :D I've been in, on and off, since beta, and I happen to feel about the same. I'm getting more and more excited, and really hoping that dual pistols shows up somewhere other than the Thug Life MM.

Yeah, the more I think about that, the more I start giggling. People've been looking at me funny all day.

Ah, and there's the announcement for purchasable server slots. Which was pretty much a given, since it'll be a cold day in hell before they allow powerset respecification. Please send all donations to EPU, care of John Trussell... :D

Even more sad is the fact I'm wondering where you got those rocket boots from. One of the veteran rewards?

Nope, it's one of the inventable costume pieces (as are the robotic wings). Find the recipe, find the appropriate salvage, 5,000 Influence at an invention workbench, then whatever they charge you at Icon to put 'em on at your level.

If I had a spare, I'd give 'em to you. My main tends to get a *lot* of costume drops.

Luckily, since they upped the drop rate, the costume recipes are relatively dirt cheap now. At least when compared for the millions they used to go for.

I ended up selling a few Luck Charms for stupid amounts of Influence and got a recipe. Makes the usual 'anti-grav' type flying look even cooler :P
