Gainax has been dead for a decade now, it was just a shell that existed on paper. Everybody who actually did anything moved to Studio Khara with Anno or Studio Trigger with Imaishi. The real beginning of the end though, was almost certainly Studio Khara suing for a hundred million yen in royalties in 2016. And also another 100 million yen from a loan from Khara in 2014. Things were actually going pretty well until then. And then one of their directors assaulted a voice actress in 2019 which caused stuff to be cancelled while still accruing debt, which made things *worse*.
Hard to pay back a loan when you aren't able to earn any money.
The last thing they made was Wish Upon the Pleiades in 2015, which was a co-production with the car maker Subaru, and has...extremely middling reviews. I've never watched it, myself, but a 3.8/5 on Crunchyroll and a 5.3/10 on imdb doesn't seem promising. Before that was Magica Wars in 2014 which is an anime based on a free-to-play mobile/browser game with...even more middling reviews. 5.5 on imdb and 5/10 on Anime.com (??? Seriously? anime.com? That's like "books.net", what the hell.)
The last thing they did that wasn't basically contract work was Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt in 2010, and that went with Imaishi to Trigger.
Edit: Well, I shouldn't be that rude to them about contract work, that was most of what they did between the stuff they were actually super well known for. But most of what they were super well known for (NGE, Nadia, Gurren Lagann, Panty and Stocking, Gunbuster) were originals done by Anno or Imaishi.
