"idle musing"

As I watch Calli try to figure out where to put her avatar so that it won't be blocking an important part of the Persona 3 Reload UI, I find myself wondering: have some game developers started thinking about that? I mean, when they set out to design the HUD and such for a game, is it occurring to any of them to leave a space somewhere for the livestreamer/vtuber? It seems like one of those things that would start happening eventually, now that most devs are aware that their games are likely to get streamed.

It should've been a design conception for easily a decade at this point, long before vtubers.

Most elegant ways I've seen of dealing with the unevenness of game UIs is to diagonal frame offset the game and leave a dedicated box in the lower corner to put your facecam or vtuber avatar, then use the frame to show chat, your tags, a banner, etc.

Yeah, overlays are fairly common, but they're also pretty controversial. A lot of people in chat get really annoyed about giving up that much screen real estate that could have game in it, and the process occasionally does really weird stuff to stream bitrates and the like.

I think the only reasonable thing to do is make the screen smaller and have a sizable letterbox on the side and underneath.

But lord does that make the game look worse a lot of the time.

And I'm worried about compressing the UI, especially for more complicated/information dense games, BUT, that said, they have streamer settings for nudity and licensed music, so they really should add 'space for facecam' to them.

We're just fortunate that the age of livestreaming didn't overlap with the era of games (especially RPGs) that insisted on putting every conceivable piece of information and button on the screen at all times, which some of us may remember from the '90s. Or from any number of episodes of Ross's Game Dungeon, come to that. :)
