As it happens, I just re-read The Right Stuff a few weeks ago. Or, well, I say "read"; Audible had just brought out an audiobook version of it narrated by Dennis Quaid, who played Gordo Cooper in the movie.

I've been thinking about it off and on for the past couple-three days, particularly the passage about Deke Slayton being pulled off flight status: It can blow at any seam.
