The support wires started breaking earlier this year, forcing them to decommission it, but before they could do anything to repair them, the instrument platform collapsed into the telescope bowl, destroying them both beyond repair.

It was already beyond repair when the second cable went, that's when it became too dangerous to attempt a repair and possibly too dangerous to demolish.
