He's best known for Hagrid, but he had quite a range, including James Bond films.

I still remember him most for his role as the Pope. Not that it was a great movie, but he managed to convincingly portray the square peg who never wanted to be in this round hole but is doing his best, dammit!

I remember seeing him on an episode of Michael Parkinson's talk show many years ago, right around the time that Star Wars Episode II came out. I can remember that part because the other guest on that episode was Samuel L. Jackson, and they were talking about how he talked George Lucas into letting his character have a purple lightsaber in that film. Coltrane asked him how he'd ended up in the Star Wars prequels to begin with, and Jackson told him he'd said in an interview once that he'd always wanted to work with Lucas, and shortly after that he got the call to audition for Phantom Menace.

"You just mentioned him in an interview?" asked Coltrane, eyebrows rising.

"Yup," Jackson replied.

Turning to the host, Coltrane remarked with massively exaggerated offhandedness, "Michael, have I ever mentioned that I've always wanted to work with the Coen brothers?"
