"TLOK4"

LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-14 AT 12:30 PM (EST)

In the nearly-full TLOK3 Camera 3 thread, Matrix Dragon said,

>So, Book 4 is done.

Just to be unambiguous about this, I haven't watched it; didn't even attempt it. A few bits and pieces about it have come to my attention peripherally anyway, mostly without context, and none has been particularly encouraging, but in that way that one can't help but wonder about exes who are still with their abusive new partners sometimes, I do get curious.

I almost reconsidered once, when season 4 started unexpectedly airing (or whatever it's called for TV shows that were banished to the Island of Misfit ToysInternet streaming) so early, but three things held me back and kept me from changing my mind.

One was that it was so soon after the stab in the face that was the end of season 3.

Another was that I saw Korra's genericated new design and was not just un- but anti-impressed. What? The visual design of your protagonist is one of the things you got unreservedly right about the show, and so you decided that after taking basically everything else away from her you'd revise that to make her less distinctive too?

And the third was that the announced capsule text for episode 401 was basically, "It's been three years since Korra's friends abandoned her when she needed them most," which struck me as a deeply inauspicious way to start.

Since then, about all I've heard of any substance was that they did the "new villain wins introductory boss battle in humiliating manner" thing again (I can almost handle one-trick ponies if the one trick is good but FFS), that the whole season has been a general sort of "Korra's long road back" thing (which doesn't work for me if it's the case because it's a long road back from something that should never have happened), and that last week's had an inexplicable giant robot.

So... despite my curiosity, which sometimes borders on something like Stockholm syndrome, I've stayed clear. Nothing I've heard about the season has made me think I would want to do anything but punch somebody after seeing any of it. I mean I like giant robots, but I can't think of a single way in which one could be dropped into the canonical setting without being painfully incongruous. Even in UF's extrapolated Dìqiú it wouldn't make much sense without extensive groundwork that I'm guessing the RISD boys, being them, didn't lay.

Now, however...

>And the finale scenes. YES. SO MUCH YES. Also, as close to making
>Korra and Asami canon as they could get away with when Nickelodeon was
>being their usual selves.

With the "also", that makes two positive things (one of them almost uselessly ambiguous, admittedly) that have reached me about it. That makes me wonder if it mightn't at least be worth watching the last one... almost.

Man, I tell you what. This show has caused more trouble for me than any other I can think of, and still will be long after today. You guys have only seen a small corner of the towering edifice of angst it's caused in the studio. It's the Nemesis of source material, exacting painful retribution from me for the hubris of adapting its main character into UF.

I had a long post typed. Then I accidentally deleted it. I'm not typing it up again right now. Maybe later.

I will note though, that maybe your waiting a bit, hearing more about the book first, might not be a bad idea. Because while I liked it overall, the scenes I didn't, I'm pretty sure those will infuriate you even more then they did me. That and the whole 'plotline starts from a flawed beginning' problem.

That said, Korra was very much following the Utena in Symphony 1 path for me, Zaheer did a lot of damage to her but didn't quite break her, the villain of the season feels like it was the first time they actually managed the 'well-intentioned extremist' angle they claimed for those other morons, Hiroshi Sato redeemed himself a lot, Zhu Li having enough of Varricks crap was one of the greatest things ever, the Original Beifong remains awesome, and I kinda want you to at least fit a variant of some of these events into UF, just to see how you explain the new spirit portal in the middle of Republic City that somehow Utena didn't notice :)

I think it's safe to say one way or another that the events of Book 4 did not occur and will not have occured, partly because of A) Gryph's already repeatedly-stated opinions of the ending of Book 3, and B) There's no way with our currently established setting that even I could explain and restore the city to its "pristine" state that we've seen so far in UF after the end of Book 4. ^_-;;

So don't hold your breath. ^_^;

I'll pretend to be shocked.

But hey, at least they've worked out you don't blame the hero! Republic City is learning! (Although that started back when they gave Korra a statue)

That, and learning that ANYTHING can become revenue for the city if they turn it into a Tourist Attraction. :) Come see the Spirit Wilds! Commune with Nature and the Spirits! Visit the Great Tree of City Hall! Enjoy the modern amenities of the Future Industries-renovated Central Station! :)

... Wait. We're going to have Asami, Varrick and Zhu Li heading up the reconstruction. (When the honeymoons are over) This has interesting mental images.

   >Hiroshi Sato redeemed himself a lot

Huh. That's odd, I was just thinking about Hiroshi this morning, but not in any sort of redemptive context. It's a pretty important backstory beat in my notes that he died of natural causes in prison in 185 ASC, which does not bear a coincidental relationship to the fact that his granddaughter Hikari was born in 186.

>Zhu Li
>having enough of Varricks crap was one of the greatest things ever,

This is one of those things that falls under the "was basically inevitable" category (see below).

>the Original Beifong remains awesome, and I kinda want you to at least

... Yeah, see, we know from basically the entire Dìqiú Suite that that didn't happen, and it's very well-established in Try Again that Korra had never met Toph before Corwin's wedding. so...

Basically, here's the deal: Nothing from the canon after about the midway point of the series-3 episode "The Stakeout" happened in UF. Anything here that resembles an item from later in the series than that is probably either a coincidence or something that just couldn't possibly have turned out any other way. That thing Korra tried to do in that episode that only didn't work because the writers were bent on doing what they did to her in the finale instead? It worked.

Well, that still works here. His plotline in Book 4 was that he'd had a lot of time to think, and come to realize he'd made an incredible series of mistakes back in Book 1. He reached out to Asami, who was suspicious, but willing to at least give him a chance. Then come the finale, Lin grabbed him from the prison on the grounds they needed all the engineers they could get (And if the prison was still standing afterwards, they could shove him back in), and he ends up playing the old Redemption Equals Death card.

Without the Earth Empire crisis, it makes sense he stayed in prison, and may or may not have made some peace with his daughter.

>>Zhu Li
>>having enough of Varricks crap was one of the greatest things ever,

Yeah, now I'm wondering if she ended up taking Varrick back in once she'd smacked some sense into him. Their interactions once she made it clear they'd be working as equals were awesome.

>... Yeah, see, we know from basically the entire
>Dìqiú Suite that that didn't happen,

Like I said, I was imagining a 'How the hell did I not notice that?' 'You were distracted by Corwin?' 'Thanks Wakaba' moment.

That works for me. And I can't imagine too much that HAD to happen in Book 4, really. Almost everything in it was based off Zaheer's effort to burn down everything he touches. And hey, that means Kuvira got to avoid going 'Peace through Tyranny', likely married Batarr Jr, and maybe even got to help Korra smack some sense into the Earth Queen. Happy ending!

And if I'm remembering the timing right, that means Korra never hears the term "Red Lotus," so your joke about the drinking society still works!

Well, she'll have heard of it - after their little chat in the Spirit World, Zaheer ended up working for her, in one of those your-kung-fu-is-best-how-may-I-serve-you-master kind of things - but it won't remind her of being tortured fifteen-sixteenths of the way to death; instead it reminds her of the least useful but most earnest minion she ever had, which is probably still good for a little smile when Gryphon brings up an organization by the same name that obviously has nothing to do with it. Instead of, you know, the post-traumatic flashback it would probably cause in a setting derived from the full canon.

So, as Kei would put it, take the win, right?

Someone had to point me to it, but here's a link to live fan reaction of the last 5 minutes of the final episode.

SS Korrasami... Bon Voyage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY1foCVjrM0

(there are clips of the video in the corner so you can see what the people are reacting to)

One of my favorite reactions is from SEANIMENET, the 1st (and last) person you see. Total eye popped, jaw dropped, stuttering OMFG-ness. Also from 101DUDE (a girl with long hair who is practically hyperventilating). Then there's BOOM SHACKALACKA ("There is a god. There is a god. Jesus loves me, yes I know"). And finally the AVATAR CHIE group: 4 happy girls, and one guy with absolutely no reaction at all!

OK, so. Moving files around today (hey, it's one of those icky "will it rain, sleet, snow, ice, what?!" days), and found another SS Korrasami reaction video. Also from the final episode, the focus of this one is the fan reaction when they hold hands at the end. 30 reaction vids split-screened onto one. And the warning on the video is right - the reaction is LOUD!
