"The Last Earth Library"

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-18 AT 08:26 PM (EST)

Mississippi Public Broadcasting has finally rebroadcast "Tomes and Talismans," an educational series created in 1985. It was shown to elementary school students across the country to teach them basic library research skills but was more memorable as... well, perhaps "The New Yorker" has the best summary of the series:

"If for some strange reason you’ve never heard of "Tomes and Talismans," just know this: it’s quite possibly the finest post-apocalyptic educational series about library science ever produced by Mississippi Public Television."

The show features a group of pacifist exploring aliens, the Users, hoping to learn how to repel the Wipers - a galaxy-roaming band of Luddite invaders - from Earth, whose sole remaining human is one librarian placed in suspended animation by the mysterious Universal Being. That librarian's task is to teach Users the library research skills they need to decipher instructions how to repel the Wiper horde from Earth.

Piqued your curiosity? Reminded you of a corny show about libraries you had to watch in school as a kid? Well, you can download the series in its entirety from here:

I have...very vague memories that might be part of this. Was one episode concerned with discovering what turned out to be a watermelon patch?

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea

Yep. The Users were trying to help Colonel Holon find some wild food since his rations had run out, but it was hard for them to figure out over radio what he had encountered. They thought the watermelons were nuts until Ms. Bookhart, the librarian, corrects them following Colonel Holon's description.

Curious - I see a lot of views (and not all of them are me!) but I was wondering if anyone had decided to download the episodes. It hasn't been rebroadcast for years due to rights issues but that appears to be settled. I just wanted to give the opportunity for it not to be "lost" again due to my inaction.

Happy Researching!

The look and feel of it leaves me imagining a Time Lord librarian.

It does have a 70s "Doctor Who" feel to it, doesn't it? The sets, costumes, and scene-chewing dialogue from the baddies? Mississippi ETV did the best they could to add a modern sci-fi flavor to a show that probably had a budget similar to the old-school "Who."

The show was released about the time that I had finished college so I never saw it in school as many others did, but I'm glad to do my bit to preserve ETV shows from that era and earlier. (After all, they did produce more than Clyde Frog, you know.)

Fun fact: The head Wiper, Chief Humbuckler, was played by the late Malcolm "Mac" Macmillan, local full-time law enforcement officer and part-time thespian. He even served as Hinds County sheriff for a number of years. He also was an active member of New Stage Theatre, Jackson's homegrown theatrical troupe.
