"Opportunity"
|
The last message from the Mars rover Opportunity was, "My battery is low, and it's getting dark." Farewell to our visitor to another planet, with hopes that it will one day be renamed a scout. Peter Eng -- A different interpretation: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Lightning off the cliffs of Olympus Mons. I watched the sun set from the Tharsis Rise. All those moments will be lost in time, like dust in a storm." |

Back in the day, I had a joke LiveJournal account for the Mysterons from Captain Scarlet. The main comic thread in it was that the Mysterons' war of nerves with humanity was so subtle, and the world so generally screwed anyway, that only the Mysterons were actually aware that they were the implacable enemies of Earth and authors of all its misfortunes. One of the subplots that emerged was that the Mysterons initially took the MER landings to be further aggression from Earth, but gradually came to be impressed with the rovers' accomplishments (and possibly, being alien computers, a bit taken with them, particularly Spirit for some reason). Eventually they decided to suspend hostilities with Earth and accept the rovers as ambassadors. In memory of this bit of online silliness, I choose to believe that they are not derelict on the surface at all, but rather living it up in the Mysterons' utopian hidden machine city as honored perpetual guests. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D.
