A man set fire to the building where Kyoto Animation was housed. Kyoto Animation's credits include K-On! and Haruhi Suzumiya.

Appalling. Absolutely senseless. There are reports that the guy who did it was yelling about plagiarism. Even if that had some basis in reality (which I doubt, personally), it can't explain something like this.

Note: Japan still has the death penalty, although they take a long time to get around to it; they just executed the Aum Shinrikyo guy last year for the 1995 subway nerve gas attack.

Some surprising good news from all of this - https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-07-29/kyoto-animation-recovers-data-from-server-after-studio-1-fire/.149489

Thank Skuld for properly reinforced server closets...

Turns out that, with a dedicated and skilled data recovery expert, you can get a -surprising- amount of data out of even badly burned computers.

It'll cost a -mint- to get it done right, but with very careful handling, it can be done - magnetic drives, as it turns out, can withstand a -surprising- amount of nonsense before they become completely unsalvageable.

Mad props to the folks who designed that server room tho. Very happy to see proper precautions in place.

Wish I could say the same about the architect of the physical location. From everything I have read, there were issues with fire safety that were not addressed because of the age and or small size of the building.

I hope I am wrong about this, as I always saw the residents of Nihongo as being very aware of all those risks even before the incendiary raids of World War 2

It's interesting to realize how long it takes people to forget their own country's mistakes. Based on other information about this sort of failure, they're right on schedule to have that lesson repeated if necessary.

Also, residents of the Japanese language? I know what you meant there, but what you wrote wasn't it.

The self-confessed KyoAni arsonist has been charged, although, oddly, the article does not say with what.

It's been 10 months since the fire and the man confessed almost immediately afterward, so we're not seeing an abundance of haste on the part of the Japanese authorities here, but it isn't just that the wheels of justice grind exceeding slow. It's also that he's been hospitalized the entire time, because, in the grand tradition of incompetent arsonists everywhere, he set himself on fire as well.

I'm not expecting there to be a really complicated judicial process from here on out, but stranger things have happened.
