"Dan Ellison's story"

   The Jolly Fat Man

Okay, maybe I'm just dumb, but am I the only person who has some questions or is unclear about Dan Ellison? In the end of the normal episodes, he has that confrontation with DJ that makes him seem just like the rest of his brothers. Then, through a look at his own thoughts in Apothesis Now, we learn that he really doesn't really want to participate in what he's doing, but is too scared to go against Natlateth. SHortly after that, he actually helps San and Shinji "borrow" the two remaining Evangelions, telling San to "give Ni hell" before he leaves. The last we hear of him is when San is telling Shinji about Ichi. In this case, he seems compassionate, attempting to comfort Ichi over the loss of one of the only people she cares about. I guess what this long-winded explaination is getting at is that I'm still not sure whether his final actions were out of spite, as indicated by his helping San and Shinji, or if they were out of kindness, as indicated by his trying to comfort Ichi. Basically: Is Dan more like Jon than the rest of his twisted brothers?

Sorry for taking so long with that whole thing.

You can't stop me, I just keep rolling
The only problem is, I don't know where I'm going

iffy. Many readers may be confused as to the goings-on inside Dan's head. It's one of the more murky and hard-to-track areas of NXE:AN, at least in my opinion.

If you, the reader, are confused, I suggest a re-read, followed by a meditative period with the intoxicant of your choice. I'm sticking with sleep-deprivation and niccotine 8 )

IMO, that's a plus. By making his thoughts 'fuzzy' you get the impression that there's more there than what the authors are showing you, which makes the character more believable.

Thanks a lot. Don't get me at all wrong though, I do like a little bit of something to think about in the stories I read, I was just a little thrown off by the contrast between the scenes mentioning him. Not to mention I was a little tired at the time I wrote that and I didn't phrase everything as well as I normally would have.

   's ok.

It seemed to me, on second read-through of the movie, that Dan was pretty much just "hanging out, along for the ride" on the whole "being evil" thing - he was there and following along because it was what was expected of him, but he never really believed in it.

The turning point came when Our Heroes, instead of doing what everyone else Dan knew would have done (which would have involved him having to recover (or not) from a spinal fracture and a 9mm brain hemmorhage), they let him go. So he kept right on going.

I'm reminded, tangentially, of a character I always wanted to play in a superheroes campaign someday -- the Evil Villain Genius who sits down, researches the situation and the opposition, and decides that - since Evil never really seems to win - the best path to Conquering The World is to Be A Nice Guy And Use His Talents For Good.

(I don't think Dan thinks this, though. He's just flipping Natla the bird.)

To go totally off topic (and if you want more information, message me, for I will not respond here), I've played in that game, and the Evil Villian Genius did in fact decide to go that path... and ended up being worse that way.

As Natlateth can tell you, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

That being said, I'd like to pose a question: what if Jon managed -
through dilligence and luck - to pull off a "redemption" of his own?
How does one pull -that- off? Now, I know we'll likely not know the
answer to this one (ever) in writing, but I find the idea intreging.
