Now, maybe I'm being silly, but does anyone know exactly what the Hoeck this guy is referring to? I have dim recollection of an article/post/something Gryphon wrote about fanfiction a bloody long time ago that this could be referring to.

Well, right on the front page there's the line, and I quote...

USENET's largest producer of quality fanfiction since 1991!

Perhaps that's what got him cranky.

Or maybe the story of the origins of Eyrie Productions, which is found off of the UF section.

Or maybe he's just a nitwit.

I suggested that to Gryph.

His response was that the reference to 'largest' was that, when that was put in place, Eyrie PRoductions included himself, MegaZone, and Derek Bacon.

It wasn't largest as in output, it was largest as in collective size of writing team.

When I did the layout of version 2.0 of the website, several years ago, I considered putting an asterisk there and, in small print at the bottom, "Rated by net tonnage." Perhaps I should have.

Interesting bit of trivia... but I'm quite willing to believe that EPU is also the most prolific source of quality fanfiction on the net as well...

I suppose it all depends on your idea of "quality". I'm actually rather gravely misusing the word in the current slogan. Contrary to popular belief, "quality" shouldn't be used as an unqualified adjective like that. It doesn't inherently mean "good".

Is it safe to assume that the pun was unintentional? :)

Personally, I find it slightly doubtful. I'd assume the pun was intentional in every way.
