"Characters you'd love to see in NF"

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-13 AT 00:23 AM (EST)

I don't know why it came to me, but Randall Flagg would make an interesting villain to see. Would definitely be one of Surtur's main agents in Midgard in my opinion. Who would you like to see make an appearance?

Michael C. Fortner
"Maxim 37: There is no such thing as "overkill".
There is only "open fire" and "I need to reload".

If you do use him, Gryph, all I ask is to be listed as "Randall Flagg's travel agent" in the credits. ;)

There are a lot of Marvel & DC characters I'd like to see, not necessarily out of storytelling interest, but simply a desire to see them handled by writers who actually care about them. *sigh*

I do have a short list of other folkss, but those drift into "story idea" territory, which I know Gryph neither cares for or needs. And one old character some of you may recall... but I'll be resurrecting him myself, even if I don't post it anywhere. :)

Both the SPECTRUM organisation (under the auspices of the IPO) and Wallace and Gromit: Action Scientists. Please.

Actually, it's a little easier to envision Bull Shannon as a Zardon Judge (at least for me). I almost see Harry as a normal judge in New Avalon.

...now I think about it, you could build a franchise around Bull as a Judge!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Loki using Randall Flagg. Not quite a one-to-one lineup of personalities to me. YMMV.

I'm perversely loving how little I understand what any of you are talking about in this thread so far. I mean, I'm mainly watching science documentaries nowadays, so you're more likely to end up with a UF version of Professor Brian Cox than whoever that is. :)

I've gone back and put a link in my post which should serve as an explanation, but I have to admit I'd settle for Brian, especially as I can now hear him in my head describing the ZC Dyson sphere as being "amazing".

Hey all, been a while since I posted here.

Recently, I watched the movie Jack Reacher and it got me to thinking he might be the sort of guy Gryphon might run into during the Exile, or been an Wedge Defender himself before going on the run during Son Set or left prior to that becoming a bounty hunter or freelance investigator. Later on Gyrph meets him again and offers him job in the IPO perhaps even becoming a Grey Lensman.

One other would be Doctor Bosconovich form the Tekken series, sure wacky scientists are a dime a dozen in the UFverse but there is his lovely daughter, Alisa.

A polite, friendly young lass with chain saws in her arms... and a rocket punch!

(Yeah I'm a little biased as she is my all time favorite fighting game character as of 2009. Thank you Kaz Harada!)

This is totally an aside, but:
Fuck that movie. Fuck it sideways with <insert Redneck rant>.

Ruined a perfectly good character. Go read the books, they really are quite good, in a "well that was a fun bit of trash" way.

Lord, think a shorter list for me would be of series I like whose characters, items, or concepts haven't shown up in UF. Ironically, most of the series I've gotten into in recent years have been because they first showed up in UF and I went in search of the source material.

If I could name any that I've thought of recently, it might be Walter Bishop (Fringe) working either for the IPO or Tesladyne. Then again, by the 25th century, what would count as "fringe science" would be far different from today.

Though I did once toy with the idea in my head that the Fallout universe would be, within certain limits, what America resembled after the Second Civil War's nuclear exchange.

Oh, yes. Piss off a lot of people, that would, though different groups depending on where it happens.

Also, Asgard might have something to say about it, if they're actually temporarily resurrecting dead heroes, rather than, say, making temporary copies of them (which is closer to what the HGW does in canon). Might get their attention anyway, because a lot of the canon magi in the Holy Grail Wars are utter dicks.

... and now I find myself imagining someone in the IPO or WDF getting involved due to being on vacation, and suddenly the Command Seals appear, or alternatively, due to a dead friend or relative who didn't Return calling them up to say hello. Tali'Zorah's grandfather is a genuine Hero, IIRC.

"They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on."

The Third Street Saints- but the Boss most especially, since the kind of street-level supervillian who gets plastic surgery to look like Gryphon down to the voice but utterly fails to do any research on his actual mannerisms or study who any of his assistants actually are, is a pretty humorous and wacky individual.

The Boss becomes significantly more threatening when you realize that even after such basic mistakes, they still managed to achieve their goals, bust their homies out, and destroy a carrier. The Boss would need a blinged out gangsta disruptor pistol though, no blasters need apply to replace their existing hand-canon.

I would love to see the Third Street Saints in UF for only this mental image.

Ultor Security: "Well why are all the alarms going off? Its just one Warthog with some Asian dude manning the gun"

Badass Krogan Mercenary: "Gimme those Binoculars" ::stares intently:: "Thats Johnny Gat... In a Warthog... Fuck this I'm out" ::Turns and runs for the hills::

Here's the down-low you didn't ask for then-Saints Row is a series of three, going on four, video games based on the same concept as the GTA franchise, but while GTA has gotten calmer recently, Saints Row has only gotten more crazy. The Saints are a street gang ostensibly formed to end gang violence by wiping out all other gangs in town, their colors are purple with optional bling, and their symbol is a fleur-de-lis. Johnny Gat is one of the founding members of the gang, the kind of guy who blows up recording studios with cars full of C4 and buries his enemies alive. The Player Character of the games is possibly even more crazy, bold, destructive and sociopathic than Johnny. Then again, maybe the Boss just has meta-awareness when s/he says that running over pedestrians in a sandbox game is therapudic. The player character and Gat are both pretty good at effortlessly slaughtering waves of whatever mooks come their way, tanking shotgun rounds, and generally being hard bastards to kill.

"Murder Time, Fun Time!" is the slogan of an in-universe Japanese game-show that the Boss stars on in the third installment of the series. It's called 'Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax' and it consists mostly of running an obstacle course full of people in mascot outfits armed with either guns or giant purple floppy dildos. There are also super-deadly traps.

Mikoto Misaka from Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. Something about being a high-level electrokinetic who's able to do coin-flips at hypersonic velocities makes me think she'd fit in just fine with the Jerrado crowd (she's the titular Railgun).

Could be interesting, but then you'd have to bring in Kuroko, her Creepy (but cute) Obsessed Lesbian roommate - who's a combat teleporter, and could be argued to be Mikoto's best friend. Mind you, there are several people in the UF-verse that could serve as excellent councilors for both of them (either helping them get together if that's an option, or helping Kuroko move on, while staying friends with 'onee-sama').

Quite true. They DO tend to come as a packaged set.

Alternately, you could bring in her Arch Nemesis/crush/friend (depending on when you take them from), whose name I can't remember to save my life (the guy with Imagine Breaker) who would arguably be even MORE interesting in this setting.

Maybe. To me, Touma seems mostly like a Boring Shounen Hero who's only real power is to make other people less awesome (and not 'by comparison' - he neutralizes superpowers with his right hand). Mind you, in UF, he'd have to deal with meeting people who can kill or otherwise defeat him without the use of any superpowers, which doesn't seem to occur to anyone he opposes in To Aru.

This would mean he'd either A: have to learn how to fight, or B: have to hang around people who can do that for him. He'd make an interesting assassin against those who rely on their abilities, I think.

Or he could just be J. Random Street Guy who gets pulled into a fight because he sees someone using an ability to beat the shit out of someone else, which is basically what happens in To Aru canon.

Dunno if I would actually want to SEE these two paired up in UF. But the fact that they could be was so damned hilarious to me that I had to get it out of my head somehow.

So, even though I have a woefully neglected project begging for my free time I went and churned this out. And I thought I'd share it with the class because well its this thread that made this visual image pop into my head. And I don't think I want them in my head anymore. Theres a lot of fragile stuff they can break in there.

I was thinking the other day--when doing an archive dive through Symphony of the Sword--that at least one of the Zorros (or a descendant, given that it is more a title handed down than an individual) would make a dandy Duelist-aligned type. I can definitely see his swashbuckling style getting along with (or conflicting with, depending on the circumstances) some of the more outgoing duelists, especially those with T'skrang influence.

As a result of a comment/quote of Marceline's over in Featured Documents and an odd train of thought, I was reminded of two old books I read years ago that would be interesting to see in UF:
the title creature of the book Warhorse by Timothy Zahn
the title character of Sassinak by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon

I wouldn't mind seeing what Gryphon and the rest do with some of the other characters from the Mass Effect series like Thane Kiros, Kasumi Goto and the Justicar who's name escapes me at the moment.

I also have this strange feeling that MegaZone is the Shadow Broker of this dimension...if he is, then kudos to him.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gryphon or Mister Deprew's take on Bane and Deadshot as well, I'm kind of curious as to how an august villian like Bane would exist in the same place as Big Fire ;)

Eleventh Doctor: I never forget a face.

The Curator: I know you don't. And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few, but just the old favorites.

Thane, Kasumi, and Samara don't interest me very much; their plotlines always struck me as if they had been added simply to make Mass Effect 2 longer. (In Kasumi's case this is particularly so; her entire story arc was DLC.) I do have a notion in mind for an incident in which someone raids what's-his-name's basement full of stolen art objects, but it's not Kasumi and Commander Shepard.

>I also have this strange feeling that MegaZone is the Shadow Broker of

Not so much, no. I'm not sure the UF universe has a Shadow Broker, per se, but even if it does it is probably not Zoner. Generally speaking, the chosen of the goddess of chaos would be a poor choice for such an organizational role...

To be fair, this is also the case for Zaeed. :) Adding stuff to make the games longer is sort of de rigeur for the Mass Effect series. It's like, I didn't actually need to spend two and a half hours clearing all five geth outposts out of the Armstrong Nebula, now did I?

>Generally speaking, the chosen of the goddess of chaos would be a poor
>choice for such an organizational role...

Isn't MegaZone a big-shot diplomat these days? That job is nothing BUT organization. I mean, he and Feeple weld together the Galactic Alliance in record time for a set of international treaties, and MegaZone, if I remember right, talked a lot of polities into signing onto the International Police Accords and their complete lack of oversight and accountability. Someone like that has to be pretty organized.

Having said all that, I have trouble envisioning MegaZone as sitting in the center of a vast web of informants and operatives. Doesn't seem like his style. Dude is extremely hands on.

Bane is pretty damn lame, but I would submit that he precisely the kind of seemingly-intelligent perpetual loser that Big Fire would dream up in their laboratories, right up until the moment he escaped and started killin' all their guys, Cerberus experiment style.

Deadshot, if he exists at all in UF, is probably working the professional mercenary circuit out on the Rim and staying the HELL away from anyone who even looks like a Lensman or any kind of other major Galactic Hero. Floyd is pretty crazy, but he's also not an idiot. The overall success rate of people who try and operate long-term and/or high profile out of places like Kane's World or New Avalon is not high, and he'd like to get paid.

Bane has been horribly misused since his creation. Few realize nowadays that his original concept was not "roided-out bruiser in a luchador mask" but "evil Doc Savage".

Dark Knight Rises really redeemed Bane for me. There's a difference between being strong and being POWERFUL. Hardy nailed the latter.

... presumably because that concept was markedly-less-than-halfassedly implemented even in his original appearance.

Samara in particular seems very shoehorned in. I never used her in 2 and her missions were kind of pointless.

Thane, on the other hand, was excellent if underused in 2, and then absolutely amazing (and potentially heartbreaking) in 3. Gryph, if you haven't played 3 yet, grab all of the DLC and have a crack. The game's really excellent now.

I think everyone has their own "list of Mass Effect squadmates who turned out to be clunkers." Not so much the first game; I know people who don't like Kaidan or Ashley (which makes the ability to kill one very convenient) but you usually can't find anyone willing to badmouth the implementation of Garrus, Wrex, Liara, and Tali.

But in two and three... Jacob has almost nobody who really likes him. The word "bland" is used a lot. Many people find Samara to be very shoehorned in, and Morinth was a good idea executed in an entirely half-assed way. James Vega seems to attract an almost visceral level of dislike from a lot of people, who, this being the internet, often express it in the form of vile slurs against hispanics. But you get a fair few people who are like "Grunt didn't grab me, Jack is just an angry child, Mordin is some kind of Nazi space scientist, EDI is just fanservice, I might have liked Miranda if the camera hadn't spent so much time glued to her ass" and so on. And fair enough. ME2 has a truly enormous squad, some of the archetypes they embody are just going to fall flat.

Mass Effect 3 was always a good game, even when the only DLC was "From Ashes." 90% of it is a tour de force.

The other 10% is so awful it manages to make the rest of the series retroactively worse somehow just by existing. Yes, even with the Extended Cut.

I think the Clever Noob guys, in their Extended Cut documentary on ME3, got it entirely right. Yes, I said documentary. You would think EA would figure out they did something wrong when there are multiple fan groups making 60-90 minute Hollywood-production level documentaries on their product.

I digress. The Clever Noob folks released their Extended Cut version of their ME3 doc just before the release of the final DLC. In it, they predicted (accurately) that the DLC would fail to actually resolve the crap ending issues BECAUSE the crap ending issues were generating so much free advertising for the game that EA had no desire to shut anyone up.

And yes, all the blame (or damn near all of the blame) for the ME3 ending is placed on EA, not Bioware. Bioware definitely suffered from the buyout, particularly in certain issues of publication control.

I dunno, if I made a product that resonated with people enough that multiple people put in the effort to make really good art based on it, I'd be wondering what I did right enough to have people care, not what I did wrong.

By that logic, numerous diabolical acts in history are justified by the quality of the literature and art that was made by people who were horrified by them. Hotel Rwanda. Cry, the Beloved Country. Picasso's Guernica. I'm not sure you really wanted to reach across that burner while it was lit. :)

I liked using Jacob more than I did Samara but that was just me because I found him just a little bit more useful than her.

On the other hand, I think the UF versions of Bane, Jacob and Samara for example would be much more well thought out IMHO.

Eleventh Doctor: I never forget a face.

The Curator: I know you don't. And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few, but just the old favorites.
