"Annotations: NXE 1:7"

[124] The obstacle course here starts out forcing DJ to use the kind of movement skills found in Tomb Raider, but then branches out into things not found in the game for the sake of being a bit more interesting.

[200] "... and besides, the wench is dead." Famous line from Christopher Marlowe's 1590 play The Jew of Malta.

[489] I threw the "twenty points" line into the previous episode specifically to set up this Real Genius reference.

[576] I didn't know at the time that this line would turn out to be prophetic.

[591] For once, a book not drawn from my own library - though I know a few, I am not myself a Philip K. Dick fan.

[616] The same sequence of moves seen in the chess game between Dave Bowman and HAL 9000 in 2001.

[626] In the real world, Garry Kasparov lost a match to IBM's Deep Blue computer in 1997.

[659] He's not, after all, entirely imperturbable.

[723] The real difference between dipsomania and alcoholism is that dipsomania occurs in waves, causing binge drinking with no particular desire to drink in between; but the old joke, that the difference is that an alcoholic is forever trying to give up drinking, better applies to Misato.

[775] Ironically, though Truss the character appeared fairly early on, Truss the author wasn't involved with NXE at the time. Indeed, when season 1 came out, I still lived in California, and didn't have much remote contact with the old Worcester crowd.

[917] Larry must have done this part; I don't use asterisks for emphasis delimiters.

[1228] Tempest 5000 was, at the time, a more or less logical extrapolation of Tempest 2000, the adaptation of the original Tempest done by Jeff "YaK" Minter for the Atari Jaguar. YaK has since gone on to adapt Tempest even further, creating an Xbox 360 game called Space Giraffe that, while not a direct evolution of Tempest, clearly shows its roots in the base gameplay.

As an aside, YaK was amused and intrigued by the concept of a holographic, near-future Tempest 5000, and agreed to appear later in NXE as a supporting character based on a description we'd sent him of how the game would theoretically work.

[1346] A canonical Rei line, though her listener's response to it is a little different.

[1363] Lara's father's name has been given as several different things over the years - and in the movies, he himself was an archeologist, not an aristocratic prat - but NXE came out not too long after the original game, and so DJ's grandfather is based on what little we learn of him in the original documentation, including his rather odd name.
