"Funny Durandal Thing"
|
Okay... first, I'll note that Durandal is the subject of three threads on this board, despite the fact that he's only appeared in the series for about six lines in 3:9. Not bad. It'd be more impressive if it was Leela, who hasn't appeared, but that's neither here nor there. Anyways, I'd been talking to my mother about Durandal over the week. Before anyone gets the idea that I'm trying to explain what may as well be an alien language to her, keep in mind that my mother routinely whips my butt at Tetris, knows more about video games than most people that I know, and is a whiz at platformers. So the lady's got something to fall back on. So we've had breakfast, and we're driving back to East Hampton, and Durandal comes up. My mom says that it sounds like a pharmaceutical. I ask her what she means by that. "You know. Take two Durandal in the morning and you'll be fine. Tylenol, Advil, Durandal..." Thought that might break a couple people. -Eliot "Durandal - Tough on colonists, tough on pain" Lefebvre -=()=- We're only given a little time in our lives to waste. Make the most of it. Electronic Transcendence Productions Producer of, um, stuff for an unspecified time-period. |

Leela has so appeared - she's the one who hooked Truss and Maya up with the data they needed to make Jet Alone's synthetic AT field work. >Anyways, I'd been talking to my mother about Durandal over the week. >Before anyone gets the idea that I'm trying to explain what may as >well be an alien language to her, keep in mind that my mother >routinely whips my butt at Tetris, knows more about video >games than most people that I know, and is a whiz at platformers. So >the lady's got something to fall back on. Keen. My mom was a big Lemmings fan, and hell at Incredible Machine (I think that was the name... sort of a "build your own Rube Goldberg" game). She also used to play this incredibly bizarre semi-three-dimensional Tetris variant involving the pieces falling down the sides of a well so that you had to arrange them on the bottom... >"You know. Take two Durandal in the morning and you'll be fine. >Tylenol, Advil, Durandal..." Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-an-dal. >Leela has so appeared - she's the one who hooked Truss and Maya up >with the data they needed to make Jet Alone's synthetic AT field work. Using the argument of what's-his-name over on the general board in the third cybernetics thread, I remain confident that even when I'm claiming something happened in the story that you think didn't, it did happen and you're just not looking at things in the correct light. ;> Kidding. Really. I'd just forgotten. >Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-an-dal. >He ain't no slouch, pal. Um... I'm missing the reference here, I just know it. >[Basically that plan failed because Bobs aren't fireproof and the >Pfhor flooded the complex with lava.] "New, improved Bob with fire-resistant skin! Be the envy of every other Rampant AI that calls an alien race to a colony ship to set into motions plans to eventually escape the heat-death of the universe!" Me, I'm still trying to figure out what Durandal's angle is going to be in Apotheosis Now. It's pretty clear that you're not going to be outright cheering against him (like, say, Tycho), but Durandal isn't the sort of AI that falls into a convenient sort of classification as hero or villain... -Eliot "Maybe that's why I like him so much" Lefebvre -=()=- We're only given a little time in our lives to waste. >>Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-Dur-an-dal. >>He ain't no slouch, pal. > >Um... I'm missing the reference here, I just know it. In the first game, during the phase of Durandal's Rampancy which I can only think must be classified as "Wacky", he grabs the player away from Leela for a bit and, at one terminal, regales him with a lengthy song whose chorus is the above repeated many, many times, and which is, according to the citation given in the terminal text, a rewrite of a popular song of the era. (Yes, that's right - early in his Rampancy, Durandal writes filk about himself.) I'm not sure why, but seeing his name in that list with Tylenol and so forth made me think of it. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Awww... we weren't talking favorite game... we were talking >favorite Tetris variant... I don't think most people consider having [CENSORED] a game. ;> >EQ? I pity your soul... please, no long, silly discussions on the >matter: everybody already knows everybody's arguements, and it's not a >serious comment anyhow. "No long, silly discussions"? Dude, that's all that anybody has here. Anyhow, my favorite Tetris variant would have to be the classic. I know it's bland, but it's always been the one that I like the most, even if my mom can whip me at it. ;> -Eliot "Having spewed vitriol, I'm back to normal" Lefebvre -=()=- We're only given a little time in our lives to waste. >Back shortly after Tetris came out, >the-Russian-guy-that-created-it-whose-name-I-don't-remember created a >bunch of "tris" variations. Welltris was one of them. >So was Hatris. Facestris, Wordtris, and I think there was a couple of other ones. I never got to play Facestris, but the latter was rather neat game, if a bit slow.
