"you know..."
|
... there comes a time in the lifespan of every project when an idea will occur to you, and you'll think, No, I can't do that, and move on to looking at other things. And then, eventually, you'll come back around to the idea again and think, Well... why can't I do that? And if you play with it long enough, you'll realize anything else you might do in that spot is just your original idea with the numbers filed off anyway, and why fight it? With that in mind, look for the return of an old friend from HL in Iron Age #3. --G. -><- Benjamin D. When talking with friends, people tend to "shorthand" what they say to each other, knowing that their common experience will make the meaning clear even if it isn't apparent to an "outside" observer. Referring to something as "Daver-sharp" is only meaningful to readers of UF; the phrase "rock climbing" will give a different mental image to a MSTie than to most non-MSTies. I think that's the "subtext" they're talking about here. TIA-Gryphon and TIA-Zoner obviously have a good deal of shared history, so they don't have to explain themselves to each other all the time. And since they're not breaking the fourth wall, they don't feel a need to explain things to the readers, either. :) We'll find out, eventually, as the story goes on--if the author feels we need to know. Which is as it should be, of course. The readers aren't supposed to be omniscient--heck, as has been pointed out here before, sometimes even the writers don't know what their characters have planned. :) --- Rob Madson, a.k.a. >... Tony Stark was in HL? By mention only. HLGryph gets in data on how to build the microfusion drive from him via Edison. Also, no offense, but can I have those braincells back? -- -Pasha What was that feeling again? Oh yes. -Rage- |

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-08 AT 03:51 PM (EDT) >>Also, no offense, but can I have those braincells back? > >Why do you think I started over? >It's not so much "HL is horrible, and I wish to scrub it's Very Existence From My Brain" as "...why do I remember this obscure fact (and some surrounding dialog ("Holy Shit, the Time Lord's REAL?" "Everything is real in the multiverse, Zoner") from a fanfic that I haven't read in a couple of years?" In otherwords: Your writing doesn't suck, I just wish that I could use that memory space for something useful. Like where my pants are. ETA: Also, my vote? GOD. Because who doesn't love GOD. -- -Pasha ("You'd be surprised, get a lead, turn the corner, flip to Orange..never know what happened.") What was that feeling again? Oh yes. -Rage- |
