"wedge history"

i'm in the group that people consider the neo-wedgerats and for a while i've been wondering how the whole wedgerat social group came about. i've heard some reasons and stuff but i'm very curious to know how it started and how the name was given. i figured i would ask the best people, the originals (you guys are the farthest back i can seem to trace). the elders aren't much help becuase they don't seem to care too much about us neos, and for some there is dislike between the groups. there also seems to be a lot of missing info between the time of the uf crew and the elders. hmm... social history... maybe i can add this into my suff. oh well.

I don't know how it started - that was well before my time. I believe the term itself was originally coined by the "in" crowd (at WPI, read "drunken fratboys") as a derisive name for the gamers and the like that hung around in the Wedge. (For all I know, the Wedge became a gaming haunt because of the late, lamented bowling tables, which made it a pretty good place to do that kind of thing if you didn't mind guys in Sig Ep jackets throwing popcorn at you and mispronouncing "loser".)

If I had to guess, I'd say the Wedge rats themselves started using it themselves out of the sort of perverse defiance which always characterizes your truly superior social outcasts. :)

It's worth pointing out, too, that it used to be two words, before Keli Clark went and chartered "Wedgerats of WPI". (Zoner?)

I don't know - I think people wrote it both ways. I never paid much attention to it. I did have a ballcap with 'PAT' on it - that's Rho Alpha Tau. A hat vendor was in the wedge doing frat caps one day and I wanted a hat anyway. There are pictures of me in it on my website - well, at least one.

I forget what year Kelly created 'WoW' - 92-93 I think, maybe 93-94. Anyway she went off and did this to the great disinterest of most everyone else... Yeah, I think it was 92-93. So it was an official WPI club - club corner in Newspeak, etc. But she left WPI and handed the presidency of WoW over to mtspace. He promptly turned to me and said "You want it?" So I was president of WoW for a year. After that we let it die. I basically used it as an excuse to write weird club corners, and to get a seat on the SOCCOM budget committees. ;-)

And the term was in use when I got to WPI in 1989, so it dates back a while.

I do recall there being a well-established Wedge Rat meme at WPI in 1988, during the Frontiers program that summer for high-school students, as my sister returned home from same and told 12-year-old Little Ardie all about these mythical Wedge Rats (and the fellow who sold T-shirts, seemingly at all hours, and had been there as long as anyone could remember).

I never forgot, but I also wasn't an engineer/ gweep type when I graduated from high school, and went to BU instead. Shame on me-- as, now, I gweep. a lot. even if I'm not a WPI alum...

I dunno, I don't think there's much dislike between the two groups. I certainly have nothing against the "elders" (Except the term. Elder and neo grate on me for some reason. We're all rats.) I just think there's not much shared interest between the groups, that's all. *shrugs* It's not a war, it's not a competition, we're all outcasts ;)

Bah, you're an outcast, mebbe; I'm not. ;p
And there are definite seperations between the "game-game-game" group and those of us who talk about other things (like UF).

Just FYI, that's always been the case. Don't delude yourself into thinking it's just a matter of which years you went to WPI... or that any one wedge rat age group is/was all one or the other.

Have to agree with Truss - you who call out 'game game game' or shout phrases like 'breasts' or 'sex' when people are trying to game (on the other side of the room) have been there since my first year - but now they're an entirely different group of people, still using the same terms.

I always wondered why you do that...

New gamers, too. Some talk louder than others.
