Well, to be fair, the presence of a top dog does not preclude other dogs. It's pretty clear in Rogue Squadron, for instance, that the VF-4 Lightning and VF-11 Thunderbolt have seen frontline service along with the marks of VF-1 that were contemporary to them. If nothing else, as the technologies it embodies advance ever further, the VF-1 does tend to get progressively more expensive. (For the same reason, it's probable that the VF-19 Excalibur will see production, even though the YF-19 prototype didn't win the Project Supernova trial.)
So I wouldn't necessarily rule out any later Macross platform solely on the basis of the VF-1 still being in production.

Yeah, I don't actually know what you're talking about there, but Corwin, Utena, and Anthy are not in the business of sorting out other people's romantic bullshit; not only is that not a service they offer, they've barely got a grip on their own half the time. :)
