"Ursula's Kiss... the hell?"

Flicking through the Austar book this afternoon I noticed a small advert in the back for a show on the ABC, called Ursula's Kiss. This is the text of the ad:

" Ursula and her friends at Otori Junior High School are pretty glam. Along with her super short shorts and international hair, Ursula wears a ring with a "Rose Crest" which she doesn't know the meaning of. Mysteriously she recieves a letter from "The Seekers of Armageddon", an organisation challenging her to obtain "the Power of Dios". Ursula finds she now has to compete against her friends - and not for the best hairdo. It's all too much for a girl like her to bear!"

The ad also had a picture of a rather familiar girl with long pink hair and holding a sword.

I checked the ABC's site and they had this to ad:

" Ursula, a beautiful 14 year old female, a junior at Otori Junior High School - lost her parents when she was six years old. While in despair, a mysterious boy with a scent of roses appeared and saved her life. The boy left her with a ring on which appeared a rose relief and the words, "If you keep your noble spirit, we"ll meet again".

Does anyone know anything about this, because it seems -very- similar to everything I've heard about Revolutionary Girl Utena but if it is, why the name change?

Thanks

Network executives are all fucking idiots.

That being stated, the only thing I can say is: "It's 'Ends of the Earth', assholes."

thank god I don't watch TV anymore, though I must admit a sick weasle-caught-in-headlight-like fascination with the idea..

I'll stick with my fansubs, thank you.

Um - what is 'the ABC'?

Anyway, Ursula's Kiss was the name the Japanese proposed to use for the English version of Utena.

Are you sure this is something actually airing and not just some out of date marketing stuff?

Exacta mondo. Now if it was SBS (Special Broadcasting Services) the general Australian telly watcher would be exposed to it. Afterall they(SBS) has access to anime from ADV and Manga.

Nope, no hoax it is airing, people at the Madman board have noticed the same thing and have verified that it true, they've just classified it as a WTF item.

Nope, it was printed in the once-a-month tv guide that Austar mails to its subscribers, its also on the ABC's website and, as others have said, Madman have confirmed it as well.

Here is the ABC's FlyTV guide which, as MD already mentioned, lists the program in the 7.30 timeslot on Thursday.

Ah, found it. It's on Fly, 7:30pm Thursdays. What the deal is, I don't know. Still, if I do get the chance to watch it, I'm there. I alsofound some details at http://www.enokifilmsusa.com/library/ursula.htm

Angie? Wanda?! Tommy?

Okay, this is why you don't let idiots handle dubbing. Anyway, I thought it was actually dubbed with all the original names?

Ah, yes. That digital TV thingy. Currently UNscheduled for deployment outside any capital city. Some of them don't have it, either. Rumours from the industry whisper the *possibility* of *some* of the 5 national stations being available in the more populous areas of North Queensland in late 2004. Maybe.

This is bad...Aahz has shown me that one. It caused a minor riot when we played. He's not convinced us to play Nuclear Novads yet though.

Back on topic....

I just shudder to think what they have done with the storylines. I suppose the characters will be duelling with nerf swords, and relationship changes throughout the show.

Ah, the simple joys of fannish indignation.

I love the smell of raving purists getting their shorts in a bunch over dubbed character name changes in the morning. It smells like ... comedy.

And now that the Obligatory Snide Remark is out of the way: PLEASE stop foaming at the mouth over a decision to use names that the target-language audience actually stands a chance of seeing in real life. (Though what cruel, cruel parent would name their poor child Ursula I cannot say.) That's a sign that they're hoping someone other than you will take an interest in the show.

Don't rage because the girl you always think of as "Tomoyo" is suddenly now being called "Madison". (Actual conversation: "It makes her sound like..." "Like a rich kid. Which she IS.") Now, if this girl just out of elementary school sounds like she's starting college, THAT is something to gripe about.

Perspective: An essential part of your balanced breakfast.

Well, except that they mangled more than just names.

For instance, they made all the gay characters straight.

Gotta protect those wee kiddies (who probably shouldn't be watching it anyway) from alternate lifestyles, you know.

According to ~Sauceman~ over at the Madman board, this is the truth on the topic:
quote:

posted by: ~Sauceman~ @ http://www.madman.com.au/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro
  1. uncut
  2. Japanese/Subtitled openings and endings
  3. CPM Revolutionary Girl Utena Dub, no name changes whatsoever
  4. It's Utena. It's fricking good.
  5. Ursula's kisses appears nowhere but the Austar onscreen TV guide. The opening has the name 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' in it rather than Ursulas vomit inducing title.

And what does that mean to your Joe Blow Aussie, get yourselve Optus/Austar or a decoder for digital tv and you'll get to watch Utena. Then again if they've acquired the CPM DVDs of it they all ready are.

Ah, so it's sort of like what they did with Zoids and DBZ. They describe it one way then show something completely different. I'm tempted to hurt them for making me miss it. But then, I don't have pay anymore. Oh well. I'm gonna go DVD hunting.

And for the record, that is the dumbest name change I have heard in quite a while.

Well, you'll have fun because as far as I know Utena's still a R1 release and Minotaur and Alternate Worlds don't have a copy of them in. Correction, Alternate Worlds apparently has a copy of the Utena movie in, see here for what else is in.

Hmm... yet another show on the box that I won't watch.

Now, that would be interesting to see, as they would have to access the Optus B3 at 156.0°E Australian/New Zealand transponders or the same on the Optus B1 (160.0°E), to do that.

Off topic, there is a serious chance of having Cartoon Network X on the TVs at work between the football games (the purpose of installing them in the first place). That would be cool - I can work and watch anime at the same time... well maybe I can't but I intend to try.
