"(S32) Welcome to Your Life"

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-10 AT 01:44 PM (EDT)

9 The title of this piece is the first line of the Tears for Fears song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (from their 1985 album Songs from the Big Chair), which also serves as the end titles theme.

17 I'm stunned, whenever I look back at the stories in the first two Symphonies, what a short period of time they all came out in. The initial story arcs were like a fire in my brain. No wonder the Forum was a busier place back then.

68 I do so love effective scene descriptions. PJM

90 Haven't seen this paragraph in a while...

97 Technically, it's one of those irritating sit-on-the-floor Nihonian tables. They don't do it that way in Gaulia, for instance.

134 The uniforms worn by the "rank and file" boys - those not members of the Student Council - at Ohtori Academy in Revolutionary Girl Utena are, well, hideous.

158 As we will see in Blood Ties, East Hall will eventually be designated the Trinity's official residence.

180 Juri is a woman of many talents, as Kate can attest. PJM

184 The Mysterious Staircase is kind of a reference to the Winchester Mystery House, a popular tourist attraction in San Jose, California, that my mother enjoyed very much when she visited me during my year and a half living in Oakland. Renovated by Sarah Winchester (the widow of William Winchester, of Winchester Repeating Arms fame) over the course of decades, unfettered by such meaningless obstacles as a plan or good taste, it's a huge, sprawling mansion with a charming sort of randomness to it. One of its features is, indeed, a staircase that doesn't go anywhere.

226 "Can I cook or can't I?"

247 Paraphrased from memory, from the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode in which they did the extremely regrettable movie Outlaw of Gor, starring a visibly slumming Jack Palance as some kinda freakin' wizard. In one of the host segments, the bots read from a fake Palance memoir containing "journal entries" from the time he spent working on the film.

372 And here's Chu Chu. To be honest, I never entirely warmed to Chu Chu as a player in our cast. Don't get me wrong, I like the little guy, but unlike the source show, UF has relatively little need of his brand of comic relief. Most of the time, he has nothing to do. Rarely does a scene pop up that demands his inclusion, so more often than not, I'm going at least a little out of my way to give him some work. This scene is the rare exception to that rule.

372 Eh, at this point, he's probably taking a tropical holiday at Jezebel, or something. After all the work he had to go through in RGU, he deserves some time off. PJM

411 Tom Palmer, on the other hand, is an interesting case study of a character introduced to play a relatively minor role who grew more or less spontaneously into greater importance. He started out as a naïve sort, easily manipulated, and, as we will see, managed to grow out of that without becoming cynical.

481 I'm not sure why the tower's basement is square when the tower itself is round.

519 Corwin's not being deliberately gallant in hopes of any sort of reward - hell, he's still heartbroken - but in a way he just can't help doing this kind of thing.

550 A sly little poke at the "crypto-lesbian subtext" thing, which had become a running joke around the studio after the Phil Thorne C&C forum flamefest.

583 Michael Stipe, lead singer of R.E.M., drops a bit of this song kind of at random into the gap between two numbers in the 1989 show that was recorded for the video Tourfilm. I had no idea what it was for years, until the Internet made it possible to look these things up. Kate's basically singing that version, as she learned it from watching that same video.

642 HiFreq is an Internet radio station of which Zach and Kate are both fond, and which has an under-the-table pre-release deal with the Crush of Love. The DJ's name being "Rez" (coupled with the station being called "HiFreq") is an oblique reference to one of the frontmen of Lo/Rez, the band featured prominently in William Gibson's Idoru.

643 Grand Teton Station, an asteroid starbase in the Vega sector. Known affectionately to the coarser sort of spacers as "the Big Tit".

657 Not really, no. He's an Ofanite, after all.

660 For once, this isn't showing up as a nervous habit, just a habit.

667 This seemed like a logical enough extrapolation of Akio's well-documented tendency not to take very good care of his things.

697 By analogy with "samovar", a kind of teakettle common in eastern Europe.

699 In Robo Rally's instructions, it is noted that the Twonky, alone among the robots, knows that he is merely a pawn in a cruel game being played by the masters of the robot factory. I'm not at all sure why this character concept would appeal to Anthy's slightly perverse sense of humor.

700 Give Me the Brain is a Cheapass Game. Cheapass products are quite popular in some studio-connected circles.

722 In hindsight, it kind of amazes me that I could write and understand paragraphs like this and still think that Corwin was going to get left on the porch. As Nall puts it in The End of the Tour, cognitive dissonance is a powerful thing.

762 Not really having a clue what she's doing is historically not much of an obstacle for Utena. We may assume that the same is true in this case.

825 Another picture to draw one day. But I can tell you right now, from experience - drawing tigers is hard. It's not the shape that's the problem, it's the stripes. PJM

838 Akio's cars could always use a valve job. As was shown again and again in the later parts of Revolutionary Girl Utena, he's a real leadfoot.

913 You haven't seen anything yet, boy.

930 "So Far Away", from Dire Straits' 1985 album Brothers in Arms.

974 Even more so than Keiko Sonoda, Kanae was an absolute cipher in Revolutionary Girl Utena. We never once saw her do anything that could be reasonably assumed to be of her own volition. Not once did anything appear that could be called a sign of whatever actual personality she might've possessed. As such, she's also proved a bit of an elusive target as far as trying to characterize her in her Symphony appearances go - which may explain why she hasn't had a lot of screen time so far.

1006 This reply comes off a little more curt than I was really intending. Corwin isn't trying to dismiss the Master Mage, he's just saying honestly that this isn't a project Clef's power can help with.

1025 Most, Utena included, didn't even believe in it when they arrived at the Academy.

1029 Though the Duelists' Code is a monumental work of magic even by Asgardian standards, the things Akio had to do in order to gain access to it in the first place - fooling the Trustees, bewitching Kanae - were little more than party tricks by the standards of the celestial realms.

1070 Akio's white charger (which used to belong to Dios) never had a name on the TV show that I can recall.

1134 "Captain of the Pillar's Guards" is the title Lafarga would have had if he'd been put in place under a properly functioning Duelists' Code, but Akio's broken tournament had put much of the machinery of the realm out of true by then.

1135 I believe this is the first reference to the Order of the Rose's proper name.

1145 Utena's objection notwithstanding, the damaged tournament begun (and repeated over and over again) by Akio after Dios's death would come to be known in Cephirean lore as the Lost Tournament.

1214 The nature of Cephiro's afterlife remains a mystery to most sages. Since it isn't part of the Creation of Odin, Vili, and Ve, its dead don't normally go to Valhalla or Hel. No one is quite certain what becomes of them.

1252 Nanami was never properly elected a councilor (having sort of taken over by default when Touga stepped away) nor selected as a Duelist (ditto), but both positions have been retroactively legitimized by the Trinity as a gesture of respect.

1345 Corwin recounts the story of one of his early experiments with home automation, referred to among his family and childhood friends as "the Sorcerer's Apprentice incident" after its similarity to the ancient folktale immortalized in the 1897 Paul Dukas symphonic poem of the same name (also seen in Walt Disney's 1940 animated film Fantasia).

1393 Not sure why I was considered part of the Air Ministry, unless that was G's translation of "editors" for the Coda. PJM
