"Omnibus No. 1"
|
Loved Bagatelle for Rifle, and happy to see something emerge from Symphony. There's a certain romance in firing an old black-powder rifle; I've fired a Pennsylvania Long before and actually did quite well with it - I'm not sure the individual processes of the firing were quite so individualized, I don't remember the hiss of the powder, just *Snap* *BOOM!*, but everyone perceives things a little differently. I think Anthy as a rifleman is a wonderful concept; it fits her slow, deliberate image from the original series, and she's developed since then, but still has a certain economy and precision, and the drill for rifle matches well. So, Deborah, consider us havin' 'coordinated' - you are a cretin and I told you so - and I will attend t' the Queen's business." - Captain Michael Ovesteegen in "Crown of Slaves", by Eric Flint and David Weber |

The idea of Anthy of all people as a rifleman just about shattered me for a minute, but it fits her I admit. As for the Omnibus as a whole, I think it works even better than the individual stories. I like the snapshot effect that the individual stories give, and how they mesh together into a whole. -------- We pray for mercy because we would be fools to pray for justice. The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one insists on adapting the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man. - George Bernard Shaw |
