"PlanetVDC - Messrob of Torikia - Review At-A-Glance"
|
Messrob of Torikia 2401 / R / 109m Young Prince Messrob, son of King Kosmos I of the Torikian Empire (which consists solely of the humble desert planet of Torikia), seeks a life of adventure beyond the dusty confines of the palace walls. Escaping the ever-watchful eye of his father under the cover of night, the misadventures of the Prince and the people he meets and collects along the way set an offbeat tone that has spawned a small-yet-devout cult following since its release. Notable as the first directorial effort of Chad Collier (SCUD the Disposable Babysitter, Zocalo Rats), Messrob of Torikia was fully funded by the eccentric King Kosmos (who plays himself, as does Prince Messrob) with the intention of being something of a travelogue for his kingdom. This VDC release is worth the price of admission for the high-spirited commentary track with the cast and crew alone, especially the detailed story of how the crew smuggled the real Prince Messrob off-planet after he decided to follow in his onscreen avatar's footsteps. 3 stars

LAST EDITED ON 10-05-04 AT 08:19 PM (EDT) >For some reason Messrob of Torikia riffs Lawrence Of >Arabia to me. I'm not sure why. The desserts are there, but that's >about all there is to it. Actually, Torikians tend to favor baked Alaska and other ice-cream-based desserts over the common desserts of the Arabian region of Earth, which include such sweets as baklava, firnee, barazek, and tumr bel nargine. A good solid Salusian-built refrigerator/ freezer combo, or a Ragolian-style chest freezer, is a prized item among Torikian dessert chefs and restauranteurs. Aside from that one cultural curiosity, Torikian cuisine tends to resemble that of the Terran Middle East, with a slightly greater fondness for sandwiches and soda pop.
