"GCID: Enigma R&D"

GENOM CORPORATION INTERNAL DATABASE

Enigma Sector Research & Development

Research and development is vital to any successful corporation, and GENOM is no different. While today's methods are far more ethical than those of yesteryear, GENOM's research labs remain legendary for throwing their entire weight against seemingly insurmountable problems and, more often than not, devising solutions beneficial to both the company and the galaxy at large.

Enigma R&D has one of the largest, if not the largest, budgets in all of GENOM's Enigma Sector operations, partly due to the sheer number of unusual phenomena and other mysteries within the sector, but also because of the current leadership's emphasis on research in all areas of both corporate and public interest. The division's primary laboratory is located in the GENOM Tower on Reznor, a planet on which GENOM currently owns a sizable amount of real estate and market share (and which the company has been trying with limited success to clean up a bit).

Enigma R&D is either envied or disparaged depending on political alignments within the company and beyond. Many view the division's Inner Gear personnel as a gaggle of misfits who lack the benefit of proper education and experience (and they rarely give the Outer Gear so much as the time of day). Some of the detractors are particularly suspicious of Division Chief Uzuki's extensive education in light of her age, finding it impossible to believe that anyone that young could possibly be that intelligent.

But whether misfits using unorthodox methods, or an incredibly diverse yet cohesive intellectual force, the fact remains that some of the most amazing of GENOM's technological breakthroughs have come from Enigma R&D.

INNER GEAR (CORE) PERSONNEL

UZUKI, Shion
Director of Operations
Race:
Human (Zeta Cygni)

Shion Uzuki is the driving force behind Enigma R&D, some would say its heart and soul as well. Gifted with astonishing intelligence, she is a master of AI and cybernetics. Nothing happens without her approval, and no project leaves the division until her high standards of quality have been met (which is sometimes a source of conflict when dealing with those with less demanding standards). Shion rarely leaves the Tower except when on corporate business (usually to Zeta Cygni to coordinate with Dr. Lawrence Mann on STACIS research) or visiting family, and is the most likely of any member of the team to pull an all-nighter at the lab and ignore the residential levels entirely.

ITSUMI, Miyuki
Engineer
Race:
Human (New Japan)

Miyuki is a classmate of Shion's from NAIS. She is the team's weapons expert, drawing on encyclopedic knowledge of arms and armor from all over the galaxy to create all sorts of new and unique weapons from the technology her colleagues develop. Her most recent creation is the highly versatile, if a bit awkward, Modular Weapon and Shield (MWS), the prototype of which is being beta-tested by Shion.

NEUMANN, Priscilla "Precis"
Engineer
Race:
Human (Niogi)

Precis is a child prodigy and certified mechanical genius. She rebuilt her first robot when she was four standard years old, and moved on to bigger things from there. Also a classmate of Shion's from NAIS, she is constantly taking things apart and putting them back together again, and the reassembled items tend to be even sturdier and have a lot more kick than before. (Shion has wondered what might happen if Precis had a whole Star Destroyer to herself for a year.) Precis was the junior robotics specialist until her senior, Ph'eng-Ting Th'eng, was injured in a lab accident.

RAVIEDE, Ernest
Scientist/Consultant
Race:
Tetragenesian (Tetragenes)

Ernest is an archaeologist by profession, a member of the Scientist Caste of Tetragenes. Tetragenesians are known and respected for their scientific skills, and possess considerable knowledge of the old cultures in the Outer Rim. As GENOM finds itself increasingly dealing with ancient artifacts and technologies, the need for experts familiar with the old empires has become apparent, and Ernest has been hired as a consultant, along with his fiancee Opera.

{no photo available}
TH'ENG, Ph'eng-Ting
Scientist <currently on disability>
Race:
Human (Earth)

Ph'eng was the team's senior robotics specialist, until she sustained critical injuries in a mishap during the early stages of the KOSMOS Project. Quick action by Dr. Lanford saved Ph'eng's life, but she remains bedridden for the foreseeable future. She still communicates with the rest of the team in cyberspace whenever possible. Ph'eng has a younger sister, Lu-Lei, who is a member of the Jedi Order.

"Kosmos"
Official Designation: KOSMOS-00a (PROTOTYPE)
Security/Data Mining
Race:
Buma

Kosmos is the prototype for the Alpha (security) class of KOSMOS Buma. She seems to be totally emotionless, although Shion insists she is programmed with a full range of emotional algorithms, and thus far there is no evidence of any flaws in her operating system. This mystery aside, Kosmos has shown excellent performance in all other tests and simulations. Kosmos acts as a security Buma and assists in researching the new weapons and programs the team is developing for her.

OUTER GEAR (SUPPORT) PERSONNEL

KENNI, Lt. Claude
Security/Test Pilot/Consultant
Race:
Corellian (Illis)
Service: Illis Corporate Armada
Rank: 1st Lieutenant

The Illians are a Corellian splinter that rejoined galactic society shortly after the end of the War of Corporate Occupation. Lt. Kenni hails from the second of the two planets of the Illis System dedicated to human habitation. Claude is a fighter pilot, certified on the IMF-series Axelay, the mainstay starfighter of the Illis Corporate Armada. When GENOM Enigma purchased a wing of fighters and rights to develop their own version of the Axelay, Claude was assigned to the research team as a consultant and as a test pilot for the fighters. When not flying, he acts as additional security for the team.

YAMAMOTO, Lt. Sanae
Security
Race:
Human (New Japan)
Service: GENOM MILARM, White Legion
Rank: 2nd Lieutenant

Standard operating procedure requires assignment of at least one stormtrooper to high-profile science operations such as Enigma R&D. Most troopers avoid this duty since guarding a bunch of eggheads tends to be boring as hell. Trooper Yamamoto, in contrast, volunteered for the assignment. Apparently the role of yojimbo is highly revered in her family. Better yet, many of her charges are very capable fighters themselves, which gives her ample opportunities to practice and refine her force pike technique.

VECTRA, Ophaerna "Opera"
Security/Test Pilot
Race:
Tetragenesian (Tetragenes)

When GENOM Enigma hired Ernest Raviede as a consultant, they also got Opera Vectra, Ernest's stubborn and somewhat hedonistic fiancee. Opera is, by her own admission, a "high-maintenance person". When not acting as a security guard (officially for Ernest, unofficially for the rest of the team) she works as a freelance bounty hunter in order to finance both her and Ernest's tastes in expensive food and wine. She is a certified Axelay pilot and owns a customized IMF-001 Axelay christened Sinfonia. She is also a patron of the arts and is a surprisingly skilled piano player.

LANFORD, Rena
Medical Doctor
Race:
Hyelian (Hyeruul)

Like many Hyelians, her actual name is very long and nigh-unpronounceable by non-Hyelians, so she has taken the much simpler "Just call me Rena" route when dealing with the galaxy at large. Rena is a fully certified M.D., and has often been called a miracle worker because of her amazing healing skills. Rena's timely intervention after the accident in the KOSMOS lab is probably the reason Ph'eng-Ting Th'eng is still alive.

MADISON, Chisato
Public Relations
Race:
Hyelian (Hyeruul)

Another Hyelian expatriate with a name even more unpronounceable than Rena's, Chisato's task is to handle public relations with the rest of the company and the galaxy at large, and put the best possible face on the company's research and development efforts. Chisato is effectively the public voice of Enigma R&D.

"Momo"
Official Designation: KOSMOS-00b (PROTOTYPE)
Test Pilot/Netrunner
Race:
Buma

Momo is the prototype for the Beta (Operations) series of KOSMOS Buma. Unlike her Alpha-class counterpart, Momo is very cheerful and friendly. (Some wonder if she got all of Kosmos's emotions, something Shion flatly denies.) Designed to oversee and control the operations of starships, from fighters to dreadnaughts, Momo loves information-gathering more than anything, making her a valuable asset during Enigma R&D's more complex research projects.

Very, Very interesting. I was wondering if KOSMOS was
going to be a buma. I wondered the same about MOMO...
but the last info we had on them...was sorta cryptic.
^-^

Nice use of the Xeno-Saga crew as well. It fits. ^-^

Ah, but the real question we have to sit and wonder about is wether Kosmos still has her bellybutton of DOOM... :)

There are times that I wonder about KOS-MOS' designer in that game. And just exactly what the devil was going through his mind during the design phase. I mean, seriously, what sort of scientist working on a self-propelled, self-guided anti-critter killbot mounts a massive area saturation laster THERE?

Maybe that's where her center of gravity is so it's easier to keep her balance when she gets enough AP to fire the thing.

Or maybe the designer just had a navel fetish, I dunno. Never can tell with these guys from Namco. :)

It's SO cool to see the Star Ocean gang getting the nod here.

I'm chomping at the bit waiting for Star Ocean 3 to appear on this side of the Pacific. (Not to mention Xenosaga 2.)

Interesting use of a Suikoden character. Is she the only one you're thinking of using? *curious*

Eh, I'm sure I can find a place for the other 107 Stars of Destiny somewhere. ;)

(More seriously, I do have a couple ideas for other characters but I need to run them past the editor first. *wg* )

As people always say, "Can't wait for the story behind this," just follow this advice, which I've given to every author I've met.

Take your time and don't release it until you feel it is good enough. It doens't matter how long it takes.

One can only imagine... (Take the Valiant's "50 pounds of attitude in a 30 pound sack" and scale it up appropriately.)

This mental image made me laugh for about a minute straight!

Hmmm... how much does a Star Destroyer weigh, anyway?

Anyway, it's nice to see the Xenosaga and Star Ocean characters in here. Now I need to actually watch^H^H^H^H^H beat XS...
