"I mean..."

"Let's try to get to the bottom of your depression," said my doctor, referring me to therapy.

It ain't hard to spot, man. When only bad things are happening, a man tends to get a sense that only bad things are happening.

also, I feel like "get to the bottom of your depression" is kinda unfortunate phrasing

It makes me think of the flavor text on the Magic The Gathering card Bottomless Pit: "I think it came with the place. I don't think you build one on purpose."

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

While this is absolutely true, my own experiences with therapy suggest that you might want to be open to the possibility that [gestures to the world] might just be part of a larger constellation of pressures. I mean, sure, it makes everything harder, totally reasonable, but the extra pressure might also be uncovering something else that was lurking, that by itself might not have been enough to be noticeable but that can make one more vulnerable to [flails arms around hopelessly again].

Either way, good luck with the process.

The way you phrased this made me think of not being able to see all the stars because of man-made lighting.

Sure, there's reason to be depressed, but it's possible for the legitimate reasons to block the view of the unreasonable things that are contributing to depression.

Also true, although I was more thinking the other way around-- which I suppose depends on which contributions you consider "unreasonable" vs. "reasonable."

Well, I would have imagined that the apparent demise of due process would be cause for any rational human to be unhappy, and that it might mask being depressed due to biochemical imbalances.

However, I have to admit that some seemingly rational humans I've encountered online are perfectly fine with this state of affairs.

Yeah, you want to be careful with that. I went into therapy to deal with depression and anxiety, and once they got managed and we started digging in, I figured out I was a girl.

That kind of therapy work is like archeology; for me, it was less the "hey, let's check through this for pottery shards" and more stuff done with The Raider's March in the background.

I dunno; I sometimes think I'd rather be some other dude, but the "dude" part remains a constant.

Nothing wrong with doing a thorough review and coming up with a confirmed result. :)

as I once told my counselor,"it's not depression, this is just situational awareness"

Jokes on me turns out it can be both
