"2009-10-07: Escape!"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-09 AT 04:09 PM (EDT) * wedge incites discord on a facebook post made by an old friend from S. Florida <wedge> chirpily noting that the Pina Colada song was playing <wedge> allowing me to introduce my Eternal Pina Colada Song Debate Conundrum: <wedge> which party is more at fault in the song? :D <wedge> for the eventual messy divorce proceedings <wedge> I lean towards the woman, as she took the ad out first <wedge> and who *knows* how many responses she got before he found it <wedge> but, at the same time, if he's so dull that he can't be arsed to know her *most basic turn ons* <wedge> tch. <wedge> :) < Truss> In fairness, you don't know how many personals ads he'd *answered* before encountering hers. She may have taken out her ad as a sting operation. :) <wedge> heh <wedge> well, the song does set it up as it being his first go. <wedge> nominally < Truss> I'll also admit that I had to look up the lyrics. < Truss> I'd managed to purposefully avoid ever paying attention to them. :) < ash-3> I have to assume they are both losers. :) <wedge> by all rights, though, the song ought to end in a gunshot. <wedge> :) <wedge> I realize the 70's were a different, crazy time, but. <wedge> o/~ and she said, "ahhh, it's you." *BANG!* <wedge> o/~ do youuuu like pina coladas.... <wedge> &c < Truss> o/~ and getting shot in the brain... * wedge claps

><wedge> which party is more at fault in the song? :D ><wedge> for the eventual messy divorce proceedingsHmm. As I recall, there's nothing in the lyrics to indicate that they're married in the first place. This doesn't change the fact that this song would end exactly the way you suggest if it played out today, or that Truss's follow-up is perfect. Peter Eng -- Insert pithy comment on a different song here. |

It was her personal ad he was responding to! -- Bob ------------------- My race is pacifist and does not believe in war. We kill only out of personal spite. |

If I limit myself to what's in the song, there is no moral superiority on either side. There's no promise of exclusivity implied, just a long-standing relationship with an obvious lack of communication. I always took, "Ahh, it's you" to be a bit of poking fun at herself for the circularity of the situation they were in, rather than a judgmental "What the hell are you doing here?!" sort of response. Peter Eng -- Insert humorous comment here. |
