"From the Desk of President Tiefeld"
|
Dr. Roland E. Tiefeld, presidentAugust 5, 2409 Students, faculty, administrators and staff of the Institute! I am pleased to announce the addition of three new members to the Deedlit Satori Mandeville faculty for the upcoming school year. Jeremy Clarkson - Dr. Clarkson will be the primary instructor for our new Automotive and Transportation Engineering program in the Advanced High School and University Divisions. In this capacity, he will also be serving as faculty advisor for the newly established Motor Club. As an enthusiastic proponent of hands-on investigation, complete student involvement, and the personal style of instruction, he will, we feel, be a perfect fit for the Institute community. [N.B. Legal guardians of all non-emancipated minor students will be required to submit Form 34-C Waiver of Instructional Liability to the Registrar's Office before enrolling in these courses or joining the Motor Club.] Sir James May CKE KCVO GC TCBC - Sir James comes to the Institute at the personal recommendation of, and as a replacement for, Professor Kraalgh vestai-Kalaan upon the latter's return to the Klingon Empire. An accomplished Klingon linguist and student of military history, he is also a duelist of some renown, which will stand him in good stead as he assumes Professor Kraalgh's role as faculty advisor for the Institute Duelists' Society. In addition to the Klingon language and literature classes formerly taught by Professor Kraalgh, Sir James will be offering courses in 20th- through 22nd-century military history and assisting with the work of the Music and Performing Arts Department. Richard Hammond - Mr. Hammond needs no introduction to our more artistically-inclined students, I'm sure, since his work as a painter, automobile designer, and architect is well-known throughout the galaxy. He is also a licensed structural engineer with extensive experience in industrial and architectural accident investigation. He will be the principal instructor for our Crash and Failure Science course, replacing departing guest professor Adam Savage, and lead practical classes in two- and three-dimensional art as well as participating in Dr. Clarkson's engineering lectures and serving as a second advisor for the Motor Club. Please join me in welcoming these three colorful and well-qualified individuals to the DSM family! With warm regards,
Roland E. Tiefeld President, Deedlit Satori Mandeville Memorial Institute P.S. Yes, they are those three blokes off Top Gear. RET/fh

>Sir James May CKE KCVO GC TCBC Odd that he's the only one with a knighthood. OK, trying to figure out the post-nominal letters: CKE is a restaurant parent company, as far as Wikipedia knows, but it might be the Klingon equivalent of CBE, KCVO and GC are current British honours, and TCBC appears to be the Trevelyan College Boat Club, at Durham University, which I don't think May attended. That one's probable another fictional Order, possibly from an alien species. So, how did I do? “They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.” -- Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington |

>>Sir James May CKE KCVO GC TCBC > >Odd that he's the only one with a knighthood. Well, he's the only one who makes a point of it, anyway. In order: CKE - Companion of the Order of Knights Eternal: the Zetan honor that carries with it the Omega-2 retroviral treatment. (See also Virginia Shepard's BPGD entry.) KCVO - Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order: bestowed upon those who have rendered a significant personal service for the British Crown. GC - George Cross: the UK's highest decoration for out-of-combat valor. TCBC - Targ's Claw with Blood Crescent: a Klingon military decoration roughly akin to the Distinguished Service Cross. (The Blood Crescent is a modifier to the award meaning, basically, "only more so.") Utena Tenjou has one of these for the Valiant's capture of the Amar. So you were two for four. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-11 AT 01:46 PM (EDT) >Is there more than one level of honour in the Order of Knights >Eternal, or are they all just 'Companions'? The vast majority of them are, as that's the basic level of membership. (There aren't "sub-knighthood" levels in the OKE, since, well, given the order's name that wouldn't make a ton of sense.) There's also LKE (Lieutenant of the Order of Knights Eternal), which is mainly the preserve of the early Wedge Defenders who received Omega-2 before the Order was created (the so-called Original Hundred, though there were actually only around 77 of them), and GCKE, Grand Cross of the Order of Knights Eternal, of which there are seven in 2410: Gryphon, Zoner, ReRob, Kei (we hope), Yuri, Field Marshal Dave Ritchie (Supreme Commander WDF), and Grand Admiral Noriko Rose Takaya (C in C WDF Navy). In practice there is little difference between the three grades apart from how elaborate the dress-uniform sash is. Above them there's only the order's "sovereign", Baron von Fahrvergnügen, who remains the nominal, if not practical, head of state of the Republic of Zeta Cygni. As he hasn't been seen in years, in practice most of the job of running the order falls to Daver and Noriko. And it must be admitted that there isn't really much to that, as there aren't dues or functions associated with it. It's not like an alumni association, there aren't picnics or fundraising drives. :) It's a common misconception that one has to be a member of the Wedge Defense Force in order to be inducted into the Order of Knights Eternal. This is not actually true, but it does improve one's odds considerably. --G. -><- Benjamin D. I seem to remember a certain Nakajima in the CFMF being quite excited about gaining Eternal Knighthood after Second Zeta Cygni (just before she found out she was going to be a PE teacher for a while, IIRC), so I kind of suspected that. I will not be surprised if Utena (among others) gets into the OKE at some point. I'm not entirely certain she'd need it, though. They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness.
