"Top Gear Diqiu Special"

While watching some old episodes of Top Gear the other day in anticipation of Series 22 starting this weekend, I found a scene coming to form in my head:

EXT. DAY Random race track. JEREMY, JAMES, & RICHARD are chatting about the three modern-ish cars they've brought along when a white coated PRODUCER shows up with a golden challenge envelope.

JEREMY opens the envelope and pulls out the note with a long-suffering look.

JEREMY
(Reading the note aloud)
Now that you have had a chance to become familiar with your chosen vehicles, it's time to see how fast they can go 'round a track. And that means turning them over to our tame racing driver. Some say he likes to start his morning with a warm cup of napalm, and that he's recently been banned from the Earth Kingdom for crimes involving cabbages. All we know is, he's not the Stig, but he is the Stig's fire-bending cousin!

...Weirdly, I picture this being set five years or so after The Federation Lives Forever.

And Fire Stig is a she.

And a drummer in her day job.

I am aware of the practical problems with this idea, but UF isn't necessarily the sort of universe where they're... germane.

That makes a terrifying/hilarious/awesome amount of sense. I'm not sure which. Maybe all of them at once.

That's alright, I did picture for a moment that it was a female Stig, only it would be Azula under the helmet.

Then I thought about it some more and realized she'd be too tempted to roast the three of them after one too many jokes at her expense.

She's feeling much better now.

All of a sudden, and for no apparent reason, I'm wondering what would happen if TOPH was the Stig.

(This is in fact a quotation from an old episode of Top Gear, in a different context.)

CLARKSON
At any moment now, there is going to be a horrible accident.

I'm not sure what would be funnier... if she wrecks it horribly, or somehow manages to post the best time ever. :)

(It all depends on whether Toph's "radar sense" works through rubber.)

They did send a blind man through once.

Granted, he'd been a rally driver before he lost his sight, but still.

It doesn't work through shoes, so I tend to doubt it'd work through a car.

Camera at the start/finish line records the screeching of tires, followed shortly by first the crunching and then scraping of metal as the Reasonably Priced Car skids across the line on its top.

CLARKSON
And she's crossed the line! God Almighty!

TOPH

Uh...does that still count?

Somehow I now imagine Toph driving a car Flintstones style. Feet through the floor and kicking off the ground - propelled by earthbending so she's always coasting down a slope.

Corwin: "You should probably turn the engine on!"
Toph: "Not enough padding on the seat! I'd lose track of where I was if the engine was shaking."
Corwin: "...carry on then."

(Nearly a year's gone by, and Series 22 seems to have been the end for the Three Amigos on TG. But in the world of UF, the show goes on...)

Int. Day. Top Gear studio. Camera focuses in on CLARKSON.

Clarkson: Now, our older viewers might remember or have read about a little company called Chryslus Motors, way back in the mid-21st century on Earth. For our younger viewers, Chryslus was a collaboration between Chrysler and General Motors, created after First Contact to test all the new technologies, and not always with success. They gave us the Corvega, which is still considered one of the greatest sports cars of the era, and they also gave us the Flea, a car that still competes with the Volkswagen Beetle for the title of "Most Soul-Crushing Car Ever Built." And then there was this...

Camera zooms out to reveal what looks like a '58 Plymouth Belvedere, resplendent in bright red paint and shiny chrome.

Clarkson: What we have here is a 2076 Chryslus Highwayman, styled to look like a Plymouth Belvedere and built at a time when Americans went mad and thought it was the 1950s again. Under the hood lived not a V8 built of pig iron and fueled by petrol, but a first-generation fusion engine that could take it from naught to 60 in under 6 seconds and a top speed of 206 miles per hour. Which was great...so long as you kept it in perfect tune.

See, the early generation fusion engines on Earth weren't what you would call "safe." If you were lucky, your car broke down and you were towed to the garage. If you weren't, your daily commute would end with a mushroom cloud. Which, ironically, is how Chryslus ended during the Second American Civil War. Now, that might have been the end of it, but for an announcement this year that Stark Industries is looking to revive the Chryslus brand, starting with an all-new model of the Highwayman. And this pokey little motoring show was given an exclusive look at the prototype.

HAH! That's hilarious, and I don't even need to click the link, because I -remember- the Highwayman. (Yes, I just dated myself, didn't I?) And the horrific glitch associated with it.

"Some say the first development of extraspatial technology--oft referred to as "hammerspace" for reasons the modern galaxy doesn't remember, was conducted in the trunk of a '76 Highwayman. The technology...was not an unqualified success. To this day, they say, there should exist somewhere in spacetime a motley collection of 21st century parts, tools, camping gear, at least one highly radioactive fusion core, and even a few ancient laser or chemical slugthrower weapons.

No one's found them yet, though. The Highwayman swallowed everything put into it whole, with neither warning nor complaint."

"The car was originally going to be powered by fusion or fission or something nifty and nuclear (something that would allow us not to have to worry about running out of gas) and those big tanks in the back were representative of this big bulky power-source that was bolted on to the back of a '57 Chevy.

We had thought, at one starry-eyed point, that the car would be something that you could upgrade with more speed, armor, weapons, etc. and that it could be a more important part of the game—well, the engine and programmer tasking weren't up to the idea of having a moving vehicle (madness, I know ;) in the game so all of that went out the window. The power source was replaced by a much more mundane 22 cubic feet of cargo-space (more than any non-wagon vehicle in its class!).

So basically, the Highwayman's powerplant was downsized in order to meet with People's State of California emissions standards. It's often the case that a prototype car isn't exactly the same when it goes into production."
