"sotd, 2008.04.05"

   I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh-huh, yeah
Could taste your sweet kisses your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night

What in this world keeps us from falling apart?
No matter where I go I hear
The beating of our one heart
I think about you when the night is cold and dark, uh-huh, yeah
No one can move me the way that you
Nothing erases this feeling between me and you

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night

I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night
Crept in your room...

I have a terrible confession to make:

I actually like the Cyndi Lauper version of this.

I mean, yes, Roy Orbison is godly. But the Cyndi Lauper version of it is also pretty darn good.

There's no shame in that.

Now, if you'd said you like the Céline Dion version, we might have to discuss your position over the trapdoor, but...

I was going to express incredulity, but Wikipedia backs you up here.

Unfortunately, thanks to my jukebox queueing up "I want you back", I've now invented the Bananarama cover of this song in my head.

*tries to shake it out of there*

Céline's a curious nexus point in the strange and ineffable overlap of rock, pop, and... whatever her preferred style is called. If her cover of "I Drove All Night" isn't enough, there's always the bizarre but true fact that one of her biggest singles, "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", was originally written for (and eventually performed by) Meat Loaf.

That's the only song of hers I can stand*, mainly because she manages the exact kind of delivery needed to perform a Jim Steinman song.

So it was, and you did good work.

But personally, I'd attribute any enjoyment of that song to James Horner's talent at composing pleasing melodies (when he bothers to actually come up with a new one these days) rather than to the extremely repetitive lyrics put to that theme or the vocalist singing them.

Originally written for him? I'm not so sure about that, although with any given Steinman song, that's the way to bet. But in this case, I thought it was originally written specifically for "Pandora's Box", the girl group he manufactured back around 1990 or so and which put out a single CD, "Original Sin". At the very least the longest and most lushly orchestrated version of the song yet is on that disk...
