"Perilous Intersections"
|
One of the dangerous things about the UF universe is that it allows for not only terrifying character meetings - the previously hypothesized Kari Byron/Amy Pond team-up, for instance - but also really inadvisable theme collisions that simply cannot happen, in many cases, in the original source materials. For instance, there's basically no way you could justify a cowboy-themed Trandoshan bounty hunter called "Hossk" in even the most preposterous Star Wars Diluted Universe product, but in the UF universe it's a simple matter of saying that he was a war orphan who was raised by a rancher on New Texas. --G. -><- Benjamin D. In UF, they may well have a common ancestor, Vulcan/Romulan style. --G. "Don't even talk to me about those guys and their stupid compound eyes." "Those are goggles." >I have a minor Gorn character (bridge officer) who frequently annoys >others by wearing those "mirrorshades" almost constantly, only >reluctantly taking them off and letting them see her real eyes. I tend to assume that those compound eyes were really intended to be actual compound eyes, because the Gorn are aliens, not dinosaurs. I also find 'These are the Voyages' something of a relief, because it makes it clear that the whole series was an in-universe holonovel series, thus nicely explaining away all the plotholes. “They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.” -- Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington |

Sadly, the moment you said New Texas, I started thinking about BraveStarr (i.e., that somewhat obscure late 80's cartoon -- essentially the Wild West IN SPACE!), which actually had a humanoid-reptilian alien on New Texas. (If you're not familiar with the show, you're not missing much.) "Everyone gets lost in the darkness Dreamers learn to steer by the stars..." - Rush, "The Pass" |

"Strength of the bear!" OK, so my memory is wired to remember old cartoons. *shrug* There're a few other sci-fi western cartoons & anime from that era. Galaxy Rangers was probably the best (right, Phil?) but I have a soft spot for Saber Rider & the Star Sheriffs, simply because it gave Peter Cullen an excuse to do a John Wayne impression in the voice of Optimus Prime. :) I could see Gryph using any of these... but probably not "The Wild West Cow boys of Moo Mesa" :D Mario |
