LAST EDITED ON May-04-13 AT 01:48 AM (EDT) by Gryphon (admin) Easy, tiger! Link got away from you a little there. :) --G.>POST >8192 MB RAM... OK >DISPLAY... HAL 17I PLUS >MASTER IOSYS... OK >PERIPHERAL IO... NONE >4096 GB CRMEM... OK > >LOADING HALOS 4.2... > > >Yes, it sounds exactly like that. That's the >Walter/Wendy Carlos version. Also: vaguely pleased that it's nearly >2015 in the real world and those are still reasonably impressive >hardware stats - given that they were intended to have been >jaw-dropping in 1998 when the machine was made. The storage capacity's pretty much right on the money, but I think the RAM is what's going to really hurt HAL's Windows User Experience Index score. Poor old DJ's might need to do an upgrade before the Steam version of Tempest 5000 comes out, to say nothing of Call of Duty: Evangelion Ops 3. I'm now vaguely disappointed that my Mac Mini, with the same amount of RAM, won't read poetry to my flatmates. |

>The story/details behind the recording of Switched-On Bach is >also one of those little miracles-in-hindsight; we're talking about >electronic music produced in the same year as Star Trek's >second season, literally one note at a time, on an apparatus that >resembled an old-style switchboard more than any sort of instrument >we'd recognize today. Indeed. Consider Delia Derbyshire at the BBC in 1963, making sounds one by one by doing off-label things to electronic devices that were never intended to be musical instruments of any kind, and then spending hours and hours and hours splicing them together with razor blades and Scotch tape until the Doctor Who theme emerged. The early Moog Carlos worked with was a little more advanced than a pile of repurposed oscillators - it did have a keyboard, and was actually intended to make music - but not that much. Its lack of polyphonic capabilities meant there was still a hell of a lot of post-production to do. --G. -><- Benjamin D. In response to Ms. Derbyshire, may I recommend Delia Derbyshire, Sculptress of Sound, and, of course, the following 6 pieces? And also, a spectacular title, that. :) Gott's Leetle Feesh in Trousers! |

This prompted me to remember that I had at one point wanted to pick up Switched-On Bach, and so I went to Amazon to look for it. Not only is it apparently out of print, but those that have it for sale want astonishing amounts for it (I suspect it's been influenced by the whole "Amazon sellers raising their prices in response to other Amazon sellers raising their prices, leading to the $17K textbook fiasco" thing). But in looking for various albums with/by Wendy Carlos, I found this. Peter & the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals Part II, by Weird Al Yankovich and Wendy Carlos. Again, the prices are ridiculous, but I really want a copy of it if I can find it for a reasonable price :) Offsides [...] in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles. -- David Ben Gurion EPU RCW #π #include <stdsig.h> |
