I do hope the reading-out of their decision includes a well-choreographed staging of "Stop! In the Name of Love".

What's the Maine Gay Marriage Law? Allowing it? If so, cool.

Well, allowing it again. Same-sex marriage was briefly legal in Maine a few years ago, having been enacted by the Legislature, but it was then repealed by referendum. Since Maine's constitution does not have a "no backsies" rule on citizens' initiatives, last month we had another referendum to put it back again. I would guess there'll be a third one attempting to repeal it again as soon as the Maine Christian Civic League can gin up enough signatures to get it onto the ballot. And so it goes, theoretically ad infinitum, or at least until there's federal law on the matter.

Well, at least the trend on marriage equality in the US has been very clear<1> so any attempts to remove it again are likely doomed and not likely to last long<2>.

<1> The demographic most against marriage equality is old, the one most for is approaching voting age.

<2> At least in places like Maine, significant populations in some states still want to see Loving reversed.

Which may be moving closer (or at least providing a little consistency to existing law), now that the Supremes have agreed to take up the issue.

That would be wild to see. But I kind of think Clarence Thomas and Elena Kagan might well be singing with opposing meanings.

Stop! In the Name of Love was The Supremes. Martha and the Vandellas were Dancing in the Streets and (Love Is Like a) Heat Wave.

I've been calling the US Supreme Court "the Supremes" since this was broadcast

And "Nowhere to Run", which has been my personal favorite Motown track since I first encountered it in Good Morning, Vietnam.

Not 100% sure what the coincidence is. Is that Utena's birthday?

No, I think Verbena's right. Kate's birthday takes place between C and D terms at WPI. Utena's is over Christmas break.

March 17, to be precise.

>Utena's is over Christmas break.

Yes - the 29th, two days after Kei's, three after Zoner's - and unlike Kate she's married, which is where the amusing coincidence comes from.
